Porcelainex – What is it and why use it?
• What is the fundamental difference between Porcelainex extruded porcelainand pressed Porcelain? The mass (clay, sand, feldspar and water) is basically the same for both processes, butwith ‘extruded’ the mass is not spray dried into a powder, but is kept wet (18% water)and forced through the extruder from a cylindrical shape (approximately 60cm in diameter) gradually (over approximately 1 metre) to an exit point, which is the widthand thickness of the tile. This puts extreme force onto the surface and base of the tile(not so much to the edges) resulting in the microscopic structure of the material beingextruded and therefore, the tiles being directional/laminated (like a wad of paper)rather than random in structure, as is the case for pressed porcelain. The directional/laminated structure results in ‘extruded’ Porcelain being superior instrength on the surface and underneath compared to pressed porcelain. The processalso means that the edges of pressed porcelain are superior to extruded porcelain, which means the surface of the extruded product is superior in terms of wear (MOHSscale) and impact resistance (from above) than pressed porcelain.
The porosity of extruded porcelain is also superior to pressed porcelain, this is enhanced because when the extruded tiles are drying (water content reducing from18%) the majority of the water leaves upwards through the surface of the tile, leavinga salt deposit resulting in a very strong surface skin. This skin enhances the strength andreduces the permeability of the tile, resulting in the surface of the tile being extremely resistant to stain penetration and is therefore very easy to clean potentiallystaining material from the surface of the tile (e.g. acids, wine, blood, graffiti etc.)
• If you compare both extruded and pressed porcelains of the same thickness, isone stronger than the other? From above (or below), the extruded porcelain is stronger. From the edges thepressed porcelain is stronger.
• Is there a difference in water absorption/stain resistance between Porcelainex extruded porcelain and pressed porcelain?Water absorbency is slightly better (lower) with ‘extruded’ but has significantly betterstain resistance.
• If you want straight, uniform edges does extruded porcelain need to be rectified?Yes, if you want to use a grout joint of less than 5-6mm. With rectification you can usea grout joint as narrow as 2mm. The straightness of the edges and the planarity of thesurface is comparable to pressed porcelain.
• Are the manufacturing tolerance/standards for extruded porcelain the same asfor pressed porcelain?Porcelainex does not conform to the same standards that pressed porcelain manufacturers comply with in terms of production. However, unrectified Porcelainextiles are calibrated and each calibration has a maximum difference of 1mm +/- 0.3mm.Please note that Porcelainex should be laid directionally in accordance with the lineson the back of the tiles.
• Impact resistance; is one more impact resistant than the other?Yes, extruded porcelain has a better impact resistance from above than pressedporcelain (please see comments above).
• Other benefits of PorcelainexPressed porcelain manufacturers generally only produce 2-3 thicknesses whereasPorcelainex can easily produce varying thicknesses quickly, easily and economicallyup to a maximum of 18mm (which pressed porcelain manufacturers are unable toreach - generally their maximum thickness is around 11-12mm). This makes the most demanding of situations possible using Porcelainex.
• What are the recommended grout widths?Rectified walls 2mm - floors 3mm - non-rectified 5 to 6mm.

Nicobond SteelkerSlim & Strong Reinforced Porcelain TilesKey Benefits
Speed of InstallationUsing the dry-fit self adhesive underlay system, up to 50m² of Nicobond Steelker tiles canbe installed per hour. The floor is then available for immediate use.
Clean InstallationThe dry-fit installation and precision engineering of the porcelain tiles allows butt jointingwhich removes the wet-trade application methods of normal tiling. Nicobond Steelkercan be installed without the creation of dir ty environments and can be fitted without interrupting your commercial activity, just closing one area at a time and movingthe furniture as you go.
Stronger FloorsDue to the steel reinforced patented technology, 5mm porcelain floors are stronger andmore impact resistant than tiles or stone that are much thicker. Nicobond Steelker exceedsthe ISO testing norms by over 35 times the standard. The improved impact resistance hasbeen tested and exceeded the requirements of international (ISO-EN), American (ASTM)and the French (CSTB) standards.
Cost EffectiveNicobond Steelker can be laid over existing floors without the need for sub-floor preparation. This dramatically reduces the fitting cost compared with traditional wet fixporcelain tiles.
SlimAvailable from 5mm thickness without the need for cement based adhesive, the dry-fitsystem means a new floor can be created with a total depth of only 7mm. This meansrenovation projects can be completed without changing doors or adding steps orchanges in floor heights.
Fashionable FloorsShould your floor become unfashionable or need to be changed to suit the corporate orpersonal style or a new client or owner, then Nicobond Steelker can be quickly and easily removed without damage to the existing building structure.
What are the advantages for the environment? The use of Nicobond Steelker in place of traditional ceramic tiles drastically cuts the impact on theenvironment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is it?Nicobond Steelker is a new generation of porcelain tile designed to be a floating floor which can be fixed in virtually any area. Due to the laminated construction fusing porcelain tiles, steel and resin fibre it can be placedon non-rigid subfloors or over existing hard floor coverings such as ceramic or natural stone. The unique lamination process creates floors that have incredible impact resistance, the disconnected installation systemmeans floors can be installed/replaced very quickly and cost effectively.
What is it for?Nicobond Steelker looks like a tile, a beautiful tile of the best quality, but it is much more.Nicobond Steelker does not need to be glued to the subfloor, nor does it need to be supported by a cementbased screed, because the tile is already reinforced. The result is that Nicobond Steelker can be set practically anywhere:
• Residential and commercial buildings• Temporary commercial areas or events, as temporary shops, exhibitions, artistic installations• Renovations, with no demolition, providing the opportunity to upgrade older buildings to current regulations
for sound insulation between floors and• Can even be used on top of old floating floors in offices, etc.
How is it laid?Installation is completely dry-fit, using Nicobond Steelker self-adhesive "repositionable" underlay mat. Easy to layand able to compensate for small gradients and steps in the subfloor. Ideal for do-it-yourself, or traditional technique using Nicobond Rapidflex Adhesive or Nicobond Starlike Epoxy Adhesive/Grout – see pages 60 - 61.
What are the benefits of Nicobond Steelker Dry-Fit Underlay? The underlay is repositionable because it is always possible to detach and re-attach any out of position pieceswith minimal effort, making the laying more easy and forgiving. The adhesive strength, once the tiling has been completed, is more than sufficient to ensure optimal bonding and being pressure sensitive, increases with time. After an hour it is close to impossible to remove a tile from the underlay, unless you cut through the underlay witha blade cutter. This type of mat gives three important features to the new floor:
• Reduces the sound transmission through the structure• Reduces the step noise inside the room• Allows the use of underfloor heating, due to good heat transmission
1-59 pages:Layout 1 24/10/2011 11:59 Page 56
www.ncdirect.co.uk 57
How to cut it?Nicobond Steelker is a high resistance composite material, but it can be easily cut using a traditional scoring wheeltile cutter (i.e: Rubi or similar). The cutting procedure is simple, nevertheless this operation must be carried outwearing protective eyeglasses and gloves.
1) Score the back side first, passing the wheel on the steel fabric reinforcement.2) Turn the tile over and score the decorated surface, exactly on the same path as on the back side. The scoring
must be seamless, with no jumps.3) Break the tile by pressing the lever of the cutter. The tile is now broken, but the two pieces will stay together.4) Bend two pieces against each other, until they separate.
Should the tiles be grouted? Not necessarily - if the floor is the rectified tile version with a very narrow joint, grouting is not always essential, this way the tiles can be easily removed and reused. In all other cases, joints between tiles must normally begrouted. As the tiled floor is “floating” the floor is not entirely rigid, but elastic, and therefore the only way to en-sure the complete impermeability of the floor is to grout the joints with an impervious, epoxy grout.
How easy is it to change a tile?If the tiles are set with narrow joints and no grout, you can simply remove the damaged tile by lifting it with a sucker, having carefully cut through the dry-fit underlay. If the floor is grouted, in order to change a tile it is necessary toremove the grout as you would with a traditionally tiled floor.
Follow these steps:1) Remove the grout: if it is epoxy (hard plastic), you will need to heat it to make it soft, then use the cutter blade
to cut it.2) Lift the tile complete with its part of the underlay, and then clean the border of the hole from where the tile
was removed.3) Place a piece of underlay either into the hole or stick it on the back of the tile and set the new tile in place
paying attention to ensure it is centered.4) Apply the grout to the new joints.
Can it be used as a wall covering?Nicobond Steelker may also be used as a wall covering. It is ideal for plasterboard, fiber-gypsum walls or over existing tiled walls (when fixed using traditional fixing methods).

1-59 pages:Layout 1 24/10/2011 16:31 Page 57
58 www.ncdirect.co.uk
Can it be laid directly on the existing floor?Nicobond Steelker may be directly laid on the existing floor if the latter is perfectly levelled using the NicobondSteelker dry-fit underlay. The old surface may be ceramic, stone, PVC, linoleum, laminate or rubber, rigid or flexible. Nothing has to be removed. Nicobond Steelker gives you the opportunity to upgrade not only aesthetic and mechanical properties, but to introduce soundproofing and/or thermal insulation.
Can it be used with Underfloor Heating?Nicobond Steelker is an optimal solution for radiant floors, because, its patented laminated structure, improvesthe radiant heating performance of the floor. The Nicobond Steelker floating floor has a very low thermal resistance when fixed using self-adhesive underlay. The materials which it is made of are able to withstand temperatures exceeding 100 °C. Electric undertile cable/mat systems need to be covered with screed to obtaina smooth surface. Can it be set on plywood, fiberboard or a chip-board sub-floor?Nicobond Steelker can be set over flexible subfloors, like plywood or fiberboard (MDF, HDF) and even on chipboard or OSB. The tiles need to be fixed to the Nicobond Steelker dry-fit self adhesive underlay, creating afloating floor that is disconnected from the timber subfloor.
Can it be set above a raised access floor?Since it does not need a concrete slab, Nicobond Steelker is an ideal solution to renovate a raised access floor. You only need to fix the tiles to the Nicobond dry-fit self adhesive underlay, taking care to correct any small levelimperfections. This solution allows the access to the subfloor space, since it will always be possible to removethe Nicobond Steelker tiles.
Can it be set above a worn-out laminate? The surface of an old worn out laminate is the ideal background for the placing of Nicobond Steelker tiles, usingthe Nicobond Steelker dry-fit self adhesive underlay.
Can it be set above resilient floor coverings, like PVC, Linoleum, Rubber or Resin? If the existing floor is level and smooth. If imperfections are greater than 1mm it is recommended to screed first.
Environmental AdvantagesNicobond Steelker has advantages over other floor covering when measured by:-
• Life span• Products that can be re-used• Products that can be recycled• Products that can be transformed in energy (waste energy process)• CO² emission per commercial unit (tiles = square meter)• Water consumption per commercial unit
What are the advantages for the environment? The use of Nicobond Steelker in place of traditional ceramic tiles drastically cuts the impact on the environment. The calculation of the environmental impact per square metre gives an impressive result: when one part over onethousand of the ceramic floor tiles made each year in Europe are fixed using Nicobond Steelker with no demolition and no concrete slab subfloor, the benefit for the environment would be as follows:
- Reduction of CO2 emissions of more than 21,000 tons, equal to morethan 21,000 medium size cars running 10,000 km per year
- Reduction in water consumption of 30,000,000 litres, equal to the average yearly consumption of 500 European people
- Reduction in solid waste generation of 100,000 tons, equal to thevolume of a 15 storey skyscraper of 1,000 square metres per apartment
1-59 pages:Layout 1 24/10/2011 16:31 Page 58
www.ncdirect.co.uk 59
Is it Certified?Nicobond Steelker satisfies quality and security standards according to European Regulation CE-89/106. As it has a very low organic content, Nicobond Steelker it is among the few floating floor materials classified as A2FL-s1-d0 as fire reaction (1° Class). Other technical characteristics are directly inherited from the tile surface.Nicobond Steelker makes use of best quality porcelain tiles which meet, or exceeds, the specifications of ISO-EN 10545 norm.
Is it marked CE?A specific, harmonized norm has not been written yet for these new concept composite materials. For this reason the composite product should not be subject to norm EN14411 which considers the ceramic tile "as is".
Moreover, since the product is designed to be a floating floor, it will not become an integral part of the building, therefore the CE marking is not mandatory. Nevertheless, our product could be adhered to the subfloor structure, becoming an integral part of the building. For this reason we are marking the boxes according to theCE regulation EN14411.
Does it pass shock tests? Our materials have been submitted to shock resistance tests, according to International (ISO-EN), American (ASTM)and more strict French (CSTB) regulations
These standards require the tile to be adhered with a two-component glue, to a concrete slab of specified thickness, whereas our tests where conducted with tiles fixed to flexible backgrounds with adhesive or dry fit selfadhesive underlay systems. All tests were passed, proving that our materials will perform at least as a tile traditionallyglued on concrete slab, also if they are dry-set on disparate supports.
Does it pass dynamic load tests?Dynamic Load tests simulate all the stresses which couldbe applied to a material during its entire operating life. The entire system is tested: the surface, the glue, the grout, the underlay.
Our flooring system proved to be appropriate for residential and commercial flooring, reaching the moststrict classifications if rigid supports and higher thicknessare chosen.
Is it unbreakable?Under extraordinary mechanical stresses Nicobond Steelker like every floor covering can be damaged. However, it is easy to replace a damaged tile.
How is it made?Nicobond Steelker is a composite material made of several hot and pressure laminated layers. This combinationof different materials gives our product unmatched aesthetical and mechanical properties and is easy to lay.
In which environments can Nicobond Steelker not be used?Nicobond Steelker cannot be used in industrial environments and in all cases where the subfloor is humid orwhere there is rising damp. Nicobond Steelker cannot be used with the dry fit underlay system in an external application.
Why choose Nicobond Steelker Slim and Strong Porcelain Tiles?A new generation of slim steel reinforced porcelain tiles designed for floating floor applications in commercial andresidential environments that reduces the impact of the existing building, saves money and time in installation withthe additional benefits of it’s environmental credentials.

A specifier needs to consider many different factors when selecting an appropriate floor, these include:-
A risk assessment by careful examination of the environmentin which the tiles are being specified should be carried outto reduce/eliminate potential issues, these can include:-
Slip ResistanceWhen selecting a floor surface consideration of the slip resistance is one of the most important factors. Slip resistance is thepropensity for the specified floor surface in combination with the wearers shoe or barefoot and the surface conditions to resist the foot from sliding. The slip resistance can change over time as wearing, cleaning and external environmental conditions can alter the measured result.
Test Criteria
PendulumThe pendulum CoF test (also known as the portable skid resistance tester, the British pendulum, and the TRRL pendulum) is the subject of a British Standard, BS 7976:Parts 13, 2002.2. This instrument, although often used in itscurrent form to assess the skid resistance of roads, wasoriginally designed to simulate the action of a slipping foot. The method is based on a swinging, imitation heel (using a standardisedrubber soling sample), which sweeps over a set area of flooring in a controlled manner. The slipperiness of the flooring has a direct and measurable effect on the pendulum test value (PTV) given (previously known as the Slip Resistance Value).
The UKSRG Ramp TestThe UKSRG ramp test is designed to simulate the conditions commonly encountered in typical workplaceslip accidents. Clean water is used as the contaminant andfootwear with a standardised soling material is used, although barefoot testing may also be undertaken. The testmethod involves using test subjects who walk forwardsand backwards over a contaminated flooring sample. The inclination of the sample is increased gradually until the test subject slips. The average angle of inclination at which slip occurs is used to calculate the CoF of the flooring.
CleaningThe specifier should also consider how the tiles are to be cleaned and maintained once installed. This is as important as specifying the correct tiles in the correct areas. An improper cleaning regime will result in failure of the anti-slip properties of the specified tile. Showering for example results innumerous different lotions and soaps as well as body fats, which can, in time, alter the tiles anti-slip performance. Equally on-sitecleaning after installation and grouting can render the anti-slip ineffective if the correct cleaning off has not taken place.
Wet Ramp Test (Din 51097) Wet Barefoot AreasIn dry areas of use, the bare foot provides adequate slip-resistance with the surface. Where conditions of contamination are likely, i.e. wet areas/liquid contaminants, the slip resistance level becomes more crucial. The grid shows the DIN 51097 Classification which indicates the relevant class of Anti-Slip finish to use in theappropriate areas.

The recommendations given on our web site throughNicobond i are made in good faith for the guidance of specifiers and users. Clarification of any system employedmust be sought from the local branch or Technical Team before commencing work.
As a general guide the following should be noted and actedupon accordingly:
• New plasterwork should have been completed at least 4weeks previously and should be dry throughout. Tiles shouldonly be fixed to the finish coat, never direct to the backingcoat. Plasterwork is unsuitable as a background for tiling inwet areas.(BS 5385: Part 1: 2009 Section 6 Table 3d).
• New concrete, concrete blocks, bricks and calcium silicate bricks should be left for at least 6 weeks before rendering or direct fixing is commenced.Cement: sand mortar rendering should be left for 2 weeksbefore tiling is applied.(BS 5385: Part 1: 2009 Section 6 Table 3a).
• At least 6 weeks should be allowed for structural floors toundergo initial drying shrinkage. If a screed is subsequently tobe applied the screed should be left for at least a further 3weeks.(BS 5385: Part 3: 2007 Section one 3.3).
• Timber is not considered to be a suitable base for floortiling in wet, frequently damp, or high humidity areas, unlessappropriate precautions are taken (BS 5385-4). Nogginsmight be required between joists in order to achieve the required rigidity. The limit of deflection normally permittedfor domestic timber floors (see BS 5268-2) might be toogreat to avoid damage to tiling systems.
• As the floor coverings, adhesives and smoothing compounds may be adversely affected by moisture, sub-floors should be constructed so as to protect the floorcovering installation from moisture or water vapour. (see BS 8203: 2001: 3.1.4)
