FrontLine Installation SystemFrontLine is a system for installation of service tomodern office workplaces. The system includes pro-ducts which enable the services to be supplied fromthe ceiling, the wall or the floor.

The system consists of two parts:1. Service content which includes socket outlets and

connections for power, telecommunication and datafor access to networks and other services.

2. Service carriers are the cable trunking, service-poles, floor outlet boxes, service posts and service box-es, with 80 mm front openings (F80®), which make thesocket outlets and connections accessible.

The F80® front openings ensure that the servicecontent is compatible with the various service carri-ers.

Most FrontLine service carriers can also be deliv-ered pre-wired, with the required service content,ready for connection to service gates in the main net-work. This will reduce the on-site installation timeand make rearrangement of the premises easier.

Every pre-wired product is given a serial numberand is tested prior to delivery. An individual test re-port is always included.

Established and Approved ComponentsWith a number of established and approved compo-nents you can, on-site, construct and install MedicalWard Units adapted to unique nursing situations.

The kit allows the construction of a ward unit forthe most straightforward form of common ward up tothe most complex installations for intensive care spaces.

The cable trunking that is one of the main compo-nents can also be used to advantage as a carrier of, forexample, service content (power, telecommunications,data, etc.) in other work spaces of the hospital ornursing home such as offices or laboratories.

The Basis: Cable Trunking, INKAThe concept for the kit is built around Thorsman’scable trunking in aluminium of type INKA. This in-stallation trunking is carrier for all electricity, tele-communications, data and low-voltage current. Thesize of the trunking is chosen with regard to cable ca-pacity and equipment required. Cable trunking isavailable in several heights. Some are two-compart-ment systems, where the lower compartment isscreened off by an integral partition. The trunking isavailable in two depths, 72 mm or 90 mm. A widerange of accessories are available for all INKA cabletrunking to ease installation and offer complete solu-tions.

Outlets for Power, Telecommunications and Data ConnectionsA complete range of products for outlets and connec-tions for power, telecommunication, data etc., is avail-able, all mounted easily in the front of the installationtrunking.

General and Reading/Examining Lighting The kit includes a combined lighting unit for generaland reading/examining light. The lighting complieswith the German DIN requirements for light disper-sion in nursing spaces. The lighting unit can be fittedon the wall close to the INKA cable trunking or sep-arately. Length can be either full-length or adapted tothe choice of lighting rail. A bed/examining lamp witharm for mounting on either wall or table is available asan accessory.

GasThe assortment of gas outlets include units ofScandinavian, German and English standard for con-nection to air, oxygen, nitrous oxide, etc. The gas ductcan, as with the lighting unit, be mounted on the wallclose to the INKA trunking or separately. Gas-pipecover is available in two designs.

Colour ChoiceAll of the visible profile components can be naturalanodized or powder coated in a number of standardcolours. The colours can be combined in accordanceto the wishes of the customer to harmonize withroom decor.

Complete Access and Outlet Program

General and Reading/Examining LightingGas outlets for different standards

Our assortment includes outlets corresponding toScandinavian (AGA), German (Dräger, Greggersen)and British (Medaes) standards. The gas outlets areself-closing and the gas flow cuts off when equipmentis disconnected from the quick coupling.

The outlets are gas-specific according to the differ-ent hospital standards, which means that connectionto the wrong outlet is impossible.

The selection includes outlets for breathing oxygen,nitrous oxide, breathing air, vaccum, etc.

There are lighting rails for different light requirements.

The lighting profile can be fitted with various lightingrails for general light (indirect), reading/examiningand night light.

General light is available in various lengths withstandard fluorescent tubes type T26 or new technolo-gy tube type T5. Reading/examining light is of stan-dard compact tube type TC.

As a supplement to the permanent lighting there aretwo types of bed/examining lamps by Luxo andSunnex for table or wall mounting.

The ultimate task of a properly designed MedicalWard Unit is to offer the exact function that the nurs-ing situation calls for.

Power and Communication, type CYB

Call system Mix-up proof labelling

Almost any of the existing call systems can be inte-grated into the Thorsman Medical Ward units. Diff-erent types of patient call units are easily mountedinto the Thorsman Medical Ward Unit, giving thepatient quick access for emergency calls.

Outlets and connections for power, telecommunica-tions and data have distinct labelling panels. Labellingis applied to the mounting frame behind the coverplate. This means that labelling remains even if thecover plate is removed, thus eliminating risk of a mix-up when refitting.

Service content of type CYB contains outlets and con-nections for power, telecommunications and data net-works. The CYB outlet cover plate has a completelysmooth surface which facilitates cleaning.

The power outlet can be delivered colour-coded inwhite, green or red in order to differentiate normalpower from disruption-free or priority power.

Cable Trunking DesignAluminium cable trunking for wall surface and flushmounting. Cable shelves can be used to divide thetrunking into various compartments, so that powerand low current cables can be routed in the sametrunking as telecommunications and data cables.Several cable trunking products, e.g. INKA-161-2 and

INKA-217-2 are two-compartment systems, in whichthe lower compartment is screened off by an integralpartition. Both compartments have separate flushfront covers. Earthing slots are provided in trunkingbase and front cover.

Composition of Lighting ProfileThe Medical Ward Unit offers many possible varia-tions for installation of reading/examining light aswell as general light. This makes it possible to obtainthe right lighting environment for varying ward re-quirements.

Fitting the lighting profile around the entire roomgives maximum space and flexibility for lightinginstallation.

General LightA suitable number of lighting rails can be fitted in theupper compartment of the profile for general (indi-rect) light. The indirect light can be of standard fluor-escent tubes of type T26 (36 or 58W). Alternativelythe new technology fluorescent tubes of type T5(28W or 54W) can be chosen. The lighting rails caneither be installed with standard or electronic ballasts.There is also space for a 5W night light in these rails.

Reading/Examining LightLighting rails for reading/examining are installed inthe lower compartment over the respective beds. Thereading/examining light uses standard compact TCtubes (18 W or 36 W) with either standard or elec-tronic ballasts. The TC 36 W compact tube may alsobe installed with a dimmable feature for adjustment asa reading or examining light.

Lighting Profile DimensionsThe lighting profile can be cut to length for a smallerunit and fitted with stop ends for mounting over abed. Whether the general light is to be provided bystandard fluorescent tubes of type T26 or of type T5,the minimum length (L) for cutting the lighting pro-file can be seen in Figure 1.

T5 TubesThe new T5 fluorescent tubes are characterized by areduced cross-sectional dimension (16 mm). Themore conventional T26 tubes are 26 mm in diameter.More important are the economical advantages of theT5 tubes:• Higher luminous efficiency• Optimized thermal behavior• Longer Lamp service life

Electronic BallastsAll fluorescent tubes can be connected to electronicballasts (35000 Hz). Lighting with electronic ballastsgives an energy saving of about 25% compared tostandard ballasts (50Hz). The lamp service life of thefluorescent tube increases by up to 50%.

The Light Fitting Rail of type TC (A) is always in onesection and is installed in the lower compartment ofthe lighting profile.

The Light Fitting Rail of type T26 or T5 is dividedinto two sections. The Light Tube section (B) isinstalled in the upper compartment of the LightingProfile. The ballast section (C) can be installed in the

lower compartment for a short lighting profile sectionor in the upper compartment for a long lighting pro-file section.

All rails are provided with push-in termination foreasy wiring. For selection of Light Fitting Rail, seepage 41.

Lighting Techniques

General LightGeneral lighting is indirect, creating a comfortableatmosphere by the use of non-dazzling illumination.Fluorescent lamps in either T26 (36 W or 58 W) or T5(28 W or 54 W) format may be used.

The use of fluorescent lamps conserves energy whileproviding the required illumination intensity. Thewarm-white colour of the light helps provide a senseof comfort and well being.

Reading LightThe reading light is placed above each bed. The choiceis either a TC 18W or 36W compact tube. The statio-

nary reading light gives a non-dazzling light withoutdisturbing other patients in the same room.

Night lightThe night light helps the hospital staff to move in theroom without switching on the main lighting. Thenight light can be a 5W bulb fastened on the Light

Fitting Rail. It can also be a light diode unit produc-ing 5 lx at short distance.


Gas Outlet Installation Techniques

The gas outlet is fixed on a wall-mounted fixing pro-file, the gas outlet cover is snap-fitted on to the fixingprofile.

The gas outlet cover profile is designed to providelarge capacity for gas piping. The cover is prepared forchoice of 1,2,3, or 4 gas outlets, see page 45. For moregas outlets a combination of these covers is possible.

The positioning of the gas outlets is prepared forc/c measure of 200 mm. This distance is suitable togive appropriate space for a smooth installation andgas pipe connection.

Gas Outlet Installation TechniquesThe gas pipe cover comes in two designs, depending upon how many outlets are required.

1. For a limited amount of gas outlets the gas pipe cover can be of TRL type.

2. For a large number of gas outlets , a full length gas pipe cover is recommended for piping capacity.

Gas connection standards

Different standards for gas connection are used in var-ious countries. Common to the different standards isthe unique adaptation technique in combination witha colour code, preventing connection of the wrongtype of equipment to the wrong gas type.

The program offers gas outlets according toScandinavian, German (DIN, two types) and British(BS) standard. The flexible mounting technique alsomakes it possible to mount gas outlets according toadditional standards or local brands.


Layout PlanningThe Thorsman Medical Ward Unit (MWU) can to alarge extent be adapted to the existing room dimen-sions. In the layout planning phase there has to bepaid attention to certain minimum dimensions whenspecifying the Medical Ward Unit.

The graphics below visualizes a layout of a MedicalWard Unit for up to 3 beds. The length of the MedicalWard Unit is mainly depending on the lighting alter-native chosen. The dimensions marked in the graphicsare of importance when deciding the total installation.

Dimmers To control fluorescent light fittings with controllable HF units. 1-50 HF units can be controlled. Thepositive and negative poles of the controller must be connected to the positive and negative polesof the HF unit. Poles 1 and 2 of the switches are wired to switch the fittings on and off. The breakfunction is rated at max 6 A (max 360 W fluorescent tube rating). If the load is higher, the breakfunction can control a relay coil instead. Note that the fluorescent tubes must not go out at the mini-mum setting of the controller. Rating 1-10 V for 1-50 HF units made by Philips, Osram, Siemens,Helvar, etc. To be connected to the plus and minus connections of the controller. Note that it is very important to observe correct polarity throughout the installation.

Cable Capacity Guide (CCG)The CCG diagram is a quick and simple way of working out the mini-mum dimensions of the installation trunking for a given number of ca-bles. If the cables are to be laid in different compartments in the sametrunking, the total height of the trunking will be the sum of the compart-ment heights.

This is how to use the CCG diagram:1. Read the diagram clockwise2. Choose the number of cables (N) on the upper vertical scale in the

middle of the diagram3. Go to the right in the diagram up to the red line that corresponds to

the relevant cable diameter (D). Directly below the intersection pointyou can read off the total cable area (A) on the right-hand horizon-tal scale. If there are cables with different diameters, the total cablearea (A) is the sum of the cable areas for the various cable diame-ters.

4. Now continue down from the intersection point for total cable areato the line that corresponds to the desired fill factor.

5. Directly to the left of the intersection point you can read off a suita-ble trunking area (S) on the lower vertical scale.

6. Then continue to the left from the value for trunking area to the linethat corresponds to the desired trunking depth for trunking with orwithout flush boxes (if the trunking is used as feeder trunking).

7. Go straight up from the intersection point and read off on the left-hand horizontal scale the smallest trunking height (H) that is requi-red to run the cables.

ExampleA number of cables are to be laid in installation trunking fitted with acable shelf so that power cables and low-current cables can be keptseparate.Known data:Power cables: 10 cables of 20 mm diameter (the lower green line inthe upper part of the diagram)Low-current cables: 22 cables of 12 mm diameter (the upper greenline)The installation trunking must be 90 mm deep, without boxes and be60 % filled.Calculated data:The cable area (A) for the low-current will be about 3350 mm2. For a60% fill factor this cable area gives a compartment area (S) of about5600 mm2. This means that the minimum height (H) of the compartmentwhere the cables will run is about 60 mm (trunking without box).The cable area (A) for the power cables will be about 4600 mm2. Fora 60% fill factor this cable area (S) gives a compartment area of about7700 mm2. This means that the minimum height (H) of the compartmentwhere the cables will run is about 85 mm (trunking without box).Suitable installation trunking should therefore be higher than 145 mm(the sum of 60 mm for the low current cable compartment and 85 mmfor the power cable compartment).The final choice of installation trunking is made with the aid of the listof our range of trunking (page 16-17) and the associated detailedcable capacity tables (pages 52-58).
