THE LEGEND

The legend tells about an old, blind, and very sick man named Techir and his donkey, also old and sick. Both of them often enter into the lake salty water to stretch their legs and both find relief .

Etymology: tekir = brindled, liny, ribbed and refer to the aspect of the lake surface in windy days

We can start to tell the Techirgiol “story” with Argonauts whose legend happens on the beaches of Pontus Euxinus, the Gods Sea in Greek.

Does somehow, beauty Medeea and stately Iason take out for a walk near the salt Techirgiol water? Were their passion and love sink into the lake grey water?

The Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso

For him Dobrogea was “The land near the Great Bear, with frosty shores by terrible frost”,placed not far from Bosfor.

The lake, situated on Imperial road between Callatis and Tomis, cannot be unobserved by Romans which knew and used the mud like Egyptians did.

HAGI PANDELE 1891 The first place with balneal destination Hagi Pandele transform an old stable and

divided it in rooms and from an old laundry boiler, improvise the first installation for warm bath at lake Techirghiol.

Ion Movila and Hagi Pandele there are the first that realized the therapeutic value of this natural resource and start to invest in land and buildings with balneal destination, some of them at the European level of comfort and endowment.

26th of octobre 1894:the first step “Eforia of Civil Hospitals from Bucharest” purchased from “ The Ministry of Agriculture and Public Domain” 100 ha land around the lake

4 July 1899 the inuguration of “Eforia of Civil Hospital “.

The Hospital had from the bigging a social and medical character. It was the first hospital in the country for treatment of tuberculosis at children.

Dr. Nicolae Sadoveanu and his assistant Dr. C. Vranialici wrote a report in 1900 for Bucharest named “Account of proceedings over balneal maritime sanatorium from Techir-Ghiol”.

The first mention about Techirghiol as health resort was done by doctor Al. Saabner-Tuduri in his monograph: “MINERAL WATERS AND CLIMATE RESORTS FROM ROMANIA”.

In 1901 is draw out the first official regulations for using mud-bath for children between 4 and 14 year old.

At Bucharest take place The First Romanian Congress of Balneology.

Is set up The Society of Medical Hydrology and Climatology lead by general Dr. Vicol.

Member of Society General Council was Dr. Ion Tatareanu.

1928 - Bucharest “ International Congress of talassoterapy ” All participants at Congress visited Techirghiol in May.

At the Congress have been presented many original studies about therapy with mud and the main changes in humans.

Professor T. Bujor was the author of a full study about Techirghiol's mud.

Dr. G. Tudorani presented a study about mud microbiology and the possibility of micro-organism to regenerate mud.

At the Congress has been organized an exhibition about therapeutical factors. From Techirghiol have been presented the mud and water from the lake. The mud get the Silver Medal. The company who has the navigation rights on the lake get the Gold Medal.

1932: International Congress of Talassoterapy.

Organized by: “ Balneo- Climatic village Association from Black Sea Shore ”.

Ludovic Mrazec and Dr. M. Sturza have been presented studys and reports related to Techirghiol resort.

The Mud reserve has been evaluated to be 1656 million kilograms, which can ensure a long life for Techirghiol resort.

The Congress draw up a set of rules for exploitation of therapeutic factors and protection of mud reserve.

Decade 4-th of 20-th Century

Even if the year 1940 was a year when the country was preparing for war, in June, at “ Dr. Teohari Laboratory” is holding on the conference of the bath owner, to ensure a good season at Techirghiol.

The war made deep wounds and the Soviet occupation made them deeper, but the life goes on......

1949 : The INSTITUT of BALNEOLOGY and PHYSIOTERAPY

To achieve: „the study of natural curative factors (....) their phyisical –chemical property and to ensure the supervision of sciencific and medical activity in the resorts”.

The Institute realysed over 60 studies on sapropelic mud from the bottom of the lake Techirgiol, in cooperation with physicians working in Sanatorium

• In 1951 in Romania was an epidemics of poliomyelitis and at Techirghiol took birth a rehabilitation departament for children

• 1972 – health system reorganization in Romania.

• At Techirghiol the resort is reorganized, and the Gouvernment decide to built a new Balneal Sanatorium with 850 beds.

• 1983 – In the Sanatorium is set up a rehabilitation departaments (52 beds).

• 1991 – Rehabilitation departament extended to 365 beds.
