Tech Trek Campers to Share Their Experiences at
September 21st Meeting
It’s time to start our AAUW-COV year by meeting our 2019 Tech Trek campers and enjoying a potluck lunch together at our first General Meeting of the new year at First Presbyterian Church in Oceanside. Tech Trek is a state-wide program that encourages girls entering 8th grade to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Math by sending them to nine California camps during the summer. The applicants were first chosen by their teachers and then COV members interviewed over 40 girls to ultimately choose 17 campers from Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, and San Marcos. These girls attended Tech Trek Camp at UCSD or UC Irvine, where they experienced living in a dorm; attending core classes, like Astronomy, Coding, Biology, and Engineering; and eating in a crowded cafeteria. Come and hear them share their personal experiences and what a good time they had at camp. GENERAL MEETING SCHEDULE: Social Hour- 9:30 – 10 am. Tech Trek Girl Presentations- 10 -11:30 am Potluck Lunch 11:30 -Noon Branch Meeting- Noon - 1 pm Please bring a dish to share according to your last name: A-D-Appetizer E-P: Salad or casserole Q-Z: Dessert We will also be raffling off an Autumn basket and signing up for Interest Groups at the meeting.

President’s Message
EACH ACTION COUNTS HERE!
My gratitude is over-flowing to the members of AAUW! I broke my
arm on July 8th and the support and assistance I needed was there
from all the AAUW members! Belle not only rescued my car and put
my groceries away while I was at Tri-City Emergency, but she drove
me to be admitted to Green Hospital, an all-day event with tests, etc.,
and Kathi Harper and her husband Bob retrieved me from the hospital
and got me home. Janet Bryant, Debby Parks, Nancy Hackert,
Sharlene Bergart, Rose Atayde, Glea Gold, Adriane Hakes, Ele
Lavender, and Donna Rencsak all drove me around and took me to
lunch or brought it to me. Ellie Burton made me two zucchini
casseroles, which were fabulous and fed me for four days! I received
so many cards and even candy from Debby! Thank you one and all for
your support; I am blessed with so many friends! My appreciation
cannot be stated enough and I will reciprocate whenever anyone
needs me, just call.
This is the first meeting of our fiscal year and we are so excited to
have our Tech Trek middle-schoolers with us to share their
experiences. I am awed by their enthusiasm and their spirit! You will
not want to miss this meeting. Each month we will be highlighting a
prominent woman in the fields of Science, Politics, Education,
Military, Law, Athletics and the Arts. This month is Women
In…Science.” Every one of our seven programs this year will be
mission-based and will be led by our two fabulous program chairs,
Glea Gold and Sally Cummins. Why not commit to attending every
meeting this year?
Kathi Harper has developed an exciting program this year that we will
be sharing with you. This program invites high school juniors and
seniors to participate in a monthly meeting called GovTrek, which
encourages these girls to consider a future in Politics.
We are also excited about our bi-annual Tech Trek fund-raiser, which
will be a tea in February celebrating the 100th Anniversary of
Women’s Right to Vote. Stay tuned and stay involved!

Interest Groups
BRIDGE GROUPS - We have three AAUW Bridge Groups and always welcome new members to fill openings in our groups and as subs. Our groups meet at 12:30 on the first Monday, first Thursday and second Thursday. Currently we have openings for our first Thursday group and welcome subs for all of our groups. DINING ABOUT - Is a group that was started for people who like to get together to eat at various restaurants. We have been meeting on the second Sunday of the month at 5:30. We will have our first dinner on October 13th then take a break during the holidays and resume in January. There will be a sign-up sheet and more information about our first dinner at the September meeting. For more information contact Sue Howe. [email protected]

EXPLORING CALIFORNIA - Meets at Charlene Williamson’s on Monday, September 16th at 9:30 am, where Sally Cummins will speak about Folks and Religious Personalities; there will be a discussion on California’s First Princess; Lynda Daniels will talk about The Wobblies coming to San Diego; Debby Parks will present on The ‘Magic City’ Surprises; and Malinda Whitelaw will enlighten the group about Remarkable Women in San Diego. Mardi Musick and Joyce King will be hostesses for this meeting
HAPPY HIKERS - On Saturday, June 1st, we enjoyed a beautiful hike around Mt. Calavera, with Annemarie and Denise adventuring to the caldera. Our first hike of the year will be at the Rancho La Costa Preserve, Copper Creek Trail on Saturday, September 7th at 9 am (time change from last year). Park along the street and find the trail head across Camino Junipero and approximately 300 feet to the right-we will meet at the trailhead. This is a 2.25 mile loop trail through the Rancho La Costa Preserve, which was the site of several copper mines over 100 years ago. The native habitat offers an abundance of birds, such as hawks, roadrunners and kites; small mammals and even deer have been spotted in the preserve. A highlight of this trail is the high ridges and hilltops that offer commanding views of the Batiquitos Lagoon, Box Canyon and the Pacific Ocean. LUNCH BUNCH - A new year of joyful gatherings around the food table will begin soon! PLEASE NOTE: The dates have changed to the SECOND FRIDAY of each month. Our first reservation of the year is at Dini's By the Sea, 3290 Carlsbad Blvd., Carlsbad, on Friday, September 13th, at 11:45 am. It is a great location and the free parking is under the building, where there is easy access to the restaurant. The menu is American and features a variety of starters, soups, salads, sandwiches and main dishes with prices from $8 to $32 for a full hot meal. This is a delightful place to eat, with satisfying food, excellent service and oceanfront views. RSVP to Belle Johnson Bohn ([email protected]) to reserve your place or call or text 619-895-7678. Elva will be your hostess for the event. We hope to see you all there! MAH JONGG -Meets at Nelle Heffner’s house on Wednesday, September 11th at 1 pm. Please let her know if you can make it. MOSTLY BOOKS - This year we have put together a new and exciting list of books for your reading pleasure. Come join us on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1 pm. Our first selection for the year is Women in Sunlight by Frances Mayes, who also authored the New York Times best seller and basis for a popular movie called Under the Tuscan Sun. This story is about four women who meet and form a friendship that takes them to a rental villa in Italy and a new lease on life. The date is Tuesday, Sept. 24th, at the home of Kathi Harper, 760-271-8970. Please let her know by text or phone call that you’ll attend so she can put your name on the list at the gate for entrance to Ocean Hills. Belle Johnson Bohn will review the book for us. Member’s Corner
Meet Jane Johnson
Although our newest member, Jane Johnson, was raised in the San Jose area, she lived the first half of her adult life in Michigan and Wisconsin. After her three children – 2 daughters and a son - were born, she returned to San Jose and pursued a degree at San Jose State in Clinical Laboratory Science. After graduating, Jane got a job at a hospital as a Medical Technologist. You know how, when you’re sick and they take all those fluids out of you, and off they go to the mysterious netherworld of “the Lab”? Well, “the Lab” is where Medical Technologists analyze your fluids and tissue and, as Jane says, “help the doctors determine what’s wrong with you.” After about five years on the job, the family moved around a bit. Her now adult children eventually moved to the Ocean Beach area, and in 2017 Jane was beckoned back to California, where she initially settled in Encinitas. A year later, she discovered Ocean Hills Country Club in Oceanside, which she says she “loves.” She also loves being retired so she can spend more time doing pilates, gardening, quilting, playing Mah Jhong, and bird watching. She also manages to fit in some travelling, with Hawaii, France and Italy high on her list of favorite places. Next up is Croatia. Welcome to AAUW-COV Jane!

At Your Service
Public Policy
Susan B. Anthony said, “There will never be complete equality until women themselves make laws.” The Public Policy Committee’s exciting new project, GovTrek, aims to usher in a whole new generation of female lawmakers!
GovTrek is a 6-month program designed to introduce young high school women to, and encourage them to pursue, careers in public service. Sessions will be once a month for 2 hours; the first hour will consist of a presentation/overview of a particular topic, and the second hour will involve a hands-on activity related to the presentation. Session topics will include: Civics 101; So You Want to be a Lawyer?; How City Government Works; How State Government Works; How the Federal Government Works; and Public Service Careers. All presenters will be women, and we already have commitments from a Carlsbad City Councilwoman, Congressman Levin’s Chief of Staff, and his Campaign Manager and Office Manager. In addition, COV’s own Seena Trigas (College History Professor) will lead the session on Civics, and our four attorneys – Kathi Harper, Lee Whipple, Janis Musante and Julie Mack – will team up to talk about the legal profession. The hands-on activities will include writing laws, finding solutions to community problems, and a debate. How fun is this gonna’ be?!

Members Make a Difference Volunteering at Solutions for Change
We will be serving dinner on Wednesday, September 18th and
Wednesday, October 2nd at 890 E. Vista Way, Vista CA (usual place and
time, 5 - 6 pm).
The food to be served on September 18th is chicken, rice and vegetable casserole; black bean and rice casserole for the vegetarians; two types of salad for 20 each; rolls, dessert and drinks. We need enough food for 40 adults. We need three volunteers to bring chicken rice casseroles. Lee will bring the black bean and rice casserole. Two volunteers to bring salad; two volunteers to bring dessert; one volunteer to bring rolls and one volunteer to bring drinks, plates, plastic ware, and napkins. If you can provide food but cannot attend, please advise; arrangements can be made for you to drop off your donation at the home of a volunteer who is available to serve.

Celebrating Women In….Science
Raise your hand if you know who discovered gravity (yes, Isaac Newton)…evolution (yes, Charles Darwin)…the relativity of time (yes, Albert Einstein – although, some say it was his wife, but that’s another story!)…what the universe is made of – what, no hands? That’s because you have probably never heard of Cecilia Payne. You won’t find her name in any textbook or attached to any award, despite the fact that she discovered that the universe is made up mostly of hydrogen, discovered what the sun is made of, and is basically the reason we know anything about variable stars. So let me introduce you to the woman who…
• Got herself a scholarship to Cambridge after her mother refused to spend money on a college education
• Moved to the U.S. to work at Harvard when Cambridge refused to award her a degree because she was a woman
• Was the first person to earn a Ph.D. in astronomy from Radcliffe College
• Was the first woman to be promoted to a full professor from within Harvard
• Inspired entire generations of women to take up science
Cecilia Payne is definitely a woman worth celebrating!

Tech Trek
Tech Trek Alumni Group is alive and thriving!! Twenty past campers attended a TTAG picnic at Beth Mason’s on August 17th. They were introduced to our exciting speakers, ate a wonderful lunch and got to know several AAUW members and other campers. Many thanks go out to our wonderful Professional Women in Science: Jasmine Sadler -an Aerospace Engineer, reviewed the path to success and the courses to take to become an engineer. She explained how taking an hour to write applications for a scholarship can award you $1000.00; well worth your time and energy, and being assertive will help you attain your goals. Pamela Jackson-Professional Aquarist and founder of EverythingOceans talked about animals that live in the oceans, our largest aquarium! She discussed ocean conservation and the essential need to clean up our oceans, especially because every other breath we take comes from our oceans. Jane Johnson-Medical Technologist. She reviewed the path to her career and the many options one has to enter a career in medical technology. Her analysis figures out the mysteries, which helps doctors save lives. She finds it both stimulating and satisfying. Allison Holland--Animal Behaviorist from the San Diego Zoo brought two dogs to pet while she told us about the large variety of animals she has trained and monitored at the zoo. Her patience in training the animals resulted in behaviors that enhanced their lives and was very rewarding. The girls were able to ask questions about their specific interests in the careers of the presenters and converse with the speakers and AAUW-COV members over lunch in the afternoon. Several girls volunteered to intern for Pamela with EverythingOceans. Other girls asked about various internships and becoming Junior Counselors at Tech Trek Camps. To our delight, one girl volunteered to create our own Instagram site for TTAG! Our TTAG speaker-luncheon was a fabulous success. The girls listened, mingled and learned, all while having fun. Some even took a dip in the pool. We look forward to our next event for TTAG. It is a tour of Opotek on Thursday, October. 17th at 4 pm.
