TEC, IVRI Pune conducted a Training Course on ‘Techniques of Fracture
Fixation in Animals’ from 22nd to 25th January 2018
The Training and Education Centre, IVRI, Pune has conducted a four day hands-on
training programme on ‘Techniques of Fracture Fixation in Animals’ during 22nd to 25th January
2018, in collaboration with the District Veterinary Polyclinic, Department of Animal Husbandry,
Aindh, Pune (MH). Sixteen veterinary officers of the State Animal Husbandry Department and
private veterinary practitioners from Maharashtra and Telangana State attended the training
programme.
The chief guest of the inaugural function of the training was Dr DM Chavan, Additional
Commissioner, Department of Animal Husbandry, Maharashtra State. Others present on the
occasion were Dr KN Bhilegaonkar, Station In-charge, Dr SK Das and Dr HP Aithal, Principal
Scientists, and D Bhaskara Rao (TO) from TEC Pune; Dr Anil Deshpande (Asst Commissioner
AH) and Dr SM Shete and Dr AM Shinde (LDOs) from District Veterinary Polyclinic; and Dr
Santosh Gaikwad, Associate Professor, Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai. Dr KN
Bhilegaonkar welcomed the Chief Guest and the participants of the training programme, and
briefed about the objectives of the course. Dr DM Chavan spoke on the need for specialized
training programmes for the practicing veterinarians to keep abreast with latest developments
and expressed satisfaction on the participants for showing interest in attending the course. Dr HP
Aithal briefed about the contents and the conduction of the course, and proposed vote of thanks.
The training included lectures, demonstrations and hands-on trainings on different
fracture fixation techniques such as fibre glass cast fixation, IM pinning, bone plating, external
skeletal fixation in different bones, femoral head osteotomy for hip luxation etc., apart from
anaesthetic management of fracture cases, and lectures on structure and development of bone,
biology of fracture healing and radiographic interpretation of skeletal diseases. Sixteen
participants from different parts of Maharashtra i.e., Nagpur, Wardha, Kolapur, Satata, Thane,
Rahuri and Pune, and from Hyderabad (TS) attended and actively participated in the training
course. The faculty included Dr HP Aithal, Principal Scientist from TEC-IVRI Pune; Dr Santosh
Gaikwad, Associate Professor (Anatomy), Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai; Dr VR
Bhagwat, Lecturer, State Level Training Centre, Gokhalenagar, Pune; and SM Shete, District
Veterinary Polyclinic, Aundh, Pune.
During the valedictory function, Dr KN Bhilegaonkar welcomed the chief guest Dr MN
Athawale, Regional Joint Commissioner, Department of Animal Husbandry, Aundh, Pune and
hoped that the trainees have made full use of the hands on training in learning different fracture
fixation techniques. Dr HP Aithal briefed how the course was conducted. The chief guest, Dr
MN Athawale, distributed certificates to the participants, and hoped that the knowledge and
confidence gained by the trainees would help treating day to day clinical cases. He also hoped
that more such programmes would be conducted in the future for the benefit of more number of
practicing veterinarians. Many trainees have expressed their views on the training course,
expressed satisfaction and thanked TEC IVRI Pune for providing an opportunity to learn
advanced fracture fixation techniques and expressed the confidence to treat fracture cases. Dr SK
