We reactivated our GC32 race boat with the team using it for guest sailing with partners, future young sailors and journalists. It was also Boris’s first public appearance since the finish of the Vendée Globe, and therefore very exciting for all his fans, especially being in the sailing city of Kiel. We organised poster signings so fans could come and meet Boris in person. The Malizia tent in the race village exhibited our activities around sailing, the new boat build, the scientific mission, our children’s education programme, our mangrove park in the Philippines and the sustainable boat development project with Greenboats. We were able to showcase partner technologies and to use two other boats to highlight these innovative solutions: Greenboats sustainably-built ‘Flax 27’ sailboat, the majority of which was built from regenerative materials. Also, the X-Shore electric powerboat that reaches speeds of 30 knots and was the ideal guest carrier for our sailing sessions.

PRINCE ALBERT’S VISIT TO KIEL

3

Prince Albert II of Monaco also joined us for one day in Kiel as the Grimaldi family have long-standing connections with Germany’s principal sailing city and with Team Malizia. Albert I of Monaco, his great-great grandfather visited Kiel 11 times around the turn of the century in the early1900s for sailing and scientific research linked with the oceanographic institutes of Kiel and Monaco. Also, Team Malizia and Boris work together with the Prince and his foundation, The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation which is focussed on protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development at local and global levels.

We were pleased to welcome the Prince to our tent to show him firsthand the different team projects which have become possible with his support. Including our Malizia Mangrove Park, our education programme and the Oceanpack that Boris carried onboard during the Vendée Globe.

Inside Multiplast Boatyard in Vannes, France (c). Yann Riou

After the Vendée Globe, we decided to sell our boat Seaexplorer - Yacht Club de Monaco to fellow Vendée Globe skipper Roman Attanasio. The objective now turns to the construction of a new Imoca 60 for Team Malizia, in order to have the most competitive and innovative boat possible, to compete in The Ocean Race 2022/23 and the Vendée Globe 2024. The new IMOCA has been designed by the French yacht design company VPLP, based in Vannes and it’s being built at Multiplast Composites, also based in Vannes. The construction started in August and the 7 boat builders are now laminating the hull. We have a team of 5 people working in our offices in France to make sure this huge challenge is delivered on time and is ready to launch on 19th July 2022.

For the construction of it we’ve partnered with 2 companies that provide us with high quality materials and expertise for the construction:

Schütz: from Germany is committed to the development, production and distribution of innovative composites and patented manufacturing methods in a sustainable way. Their motto is: “Success built on substance and sustainability”. We are also building the deck mould of the new IMOCA at Schütz. We are using their honey-comb super light materials in different parts of our new boat.Greenboats: also from Germany, create innovative, lightweight and sustainable products. They will be creating bio-composite non-structural parts of our new IMOCA.

He was the first German to compete in the Vendée Globe, the most famous and toughest ocean race.In this book he describes in detail his experiences and emotions, the ups and downs during the 80 days alone at sea. He tells of the most beautiful and dangerous moments, of the enormous mental challenges.
