Your Fundraising Makes a Difference

Whether you raise $10 or $10,000, your contribution is making a

direct impact in the lives of lung cancer patients and their families.

Of every dollar the Initiative raises, 79 cents directly supports:

Research - Since 2006 the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina (formerly

North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership) has funded more than $600,000 in lung

cancer research.

Awareness - We are committed to increasing public awareness about lung cancer

and do so through our Events, Education & Outreach Initiatives as well as other

grassroots opportunities, such as the Greensboro 5K.

Education - Our Expert Speaker Series allows for patients and their families to

hear from experts on topics related to lung cancer and research. Our AccessTLC

Program’s overall aim is to shorten the time to treatment for lung cancer patients

by educating frontline healthcare providers.

Access - Our Patient Access to Care Gas Card Program provides assistance to

lung cancer patients while seeking treatment including clinical trials.

Together we can save lives and create a future where lung cancer

patients have the same opportunity to live a life beyond diagnosis.

Together, there’s always something we can do.

Why We Walk for Lung Cancer…

Lung cancer takes more lives than the next top three cancers combined; it

represents 27% of all cancer deaths, with over 430 lives lost to this deadly disease

each day. Despite these facts, lung cancer remains drastically underfunded and

largely overlooked.

Because of this lack of research funding and attention, the five-year survival

rate for lung cancer remains at a dismal 16%, a number which has only changed by

1% in the last 20 years.

For other cancers, improvements in diagnostic practice, screening guidelines

and treatment options has caused a direct increase in survival; these changes have

led to better and longer lives for patients. Now is the time for lung cancer!

Together we can improve these statistics through dedication to research,

awareness, access and education. This type of focus has been proven to work – to

save lives – and we can create a future where lung cancer patients have the same

opportunity to live a life beyond diagnosis.

Tips for Successful Fundraising

Make it Personal. If your team is walking in honor or memory of someone

affected by lung cancer, share the story when asking for donations. Set up your

personalized fundraising page and tell your story! You can also email your story

to the Lung Cancer Initiative and they will post it on the race’s Facebook page!

Set Goals. Have each team member set a personal goal, and then set a team goal.

Encourage teammates to reach their goals or surpass them by keeping in touch. It

will raise each member’s motivation.

Ask, Ask & Ask Again. It sounds too simple, but the fact is, the most successful

fundraisers are those who ask! Make a commitment to ask at least one person for a

donation today. Remember: you are asking on behalf of others who may not be

able to ask for themselves.

Approach local small business owners. Local and national businesses are always

looking for ways to promote themselves in the community. Businesses, including

your own workplace, may be willing to match funds or help you to promote the

cause by hanging flyers, distributing an office-wide email, etc.

Send out Fundraising Letters: These can go to your friends, family members,

coworkers and your holiday card list. No need to reinvent the wheel. There is

even a template available on your fundraising platform with room for

customization!

Keep people updated! Send out emails and social media post messages telling

everyone about how much you have raised and how close you are to your goal!

Follow up! If you send a letter or an e-mail and did not hear a reply, hope is not

lost. Everyone gets busy in their everyday lives and a simple phone call or second

e-mail may do the trick.

Ask your HR person if your company has a matching gifts program. This can

easily double your donation!

Thank Your Donors. Words of thanks are always greatly appreciated from a

donor. Thank donors with a personal phone call or note.

Make it Fun! Most importantly, have fun while meeting your goals and know that

you are helping a great cause.
