Support our athletes to Dream it in Delhi

Sport, in its most noble form, is a great unifi er. It fi nds common ground between people of different races and diverse backgrounds.

I came to appreciate this aspect of sport when I had the honour of helping organize the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, B.C.

I saw how sport develops leadership skills and builds teamwork. I observed how the spirit of competition instills self-confi dence and forges lasting friendships.

And witnessed how the Commonwealth Games movement embodies and promotes all these values.

Inspired by that spirit of good sportsmanship and good fellowship, I am proud to lead the fundraising efforts for Canadian athletes training for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.

For me, it’s personal. I have gotten to know many of our athletes. I am awed by their passion and tireless commitment to a goal. They all share an optimism and unrelenting conviction to do their very best, in spite of obstacles. Very often, those obstacles are fi nancial ones.

I am calling upon corporations, organizations and individuals to contribute what you can to the success of our athletes. It’s incredible how hard these young athletes work to achieve a dream. For them, fi nancial support can be the difference between falling short or reaching that dream.

These young men and women are our leaders of tomorrow. Let’s empower them to make us proud. Let’s support them to invest in ourselves.

Hbc – A Total Team Effort

Hudson’s Bay Company has been a team sponsor and clothing supplier for three Commonwealth Games. Diane Gordon, Director of Hbc Heritage and Community Investment, has lived and breathed the emotions related to being part of Team Canada at the Games. Gordon says, “It’s not just writing a corporate cheque. It’s getting people involved in the process. It’s that feeling of pride.” Gordon acknowledges that it is a tremendous amount of work executing

Hbc’s Team Canada promotions and events, combined with designing the clothing package, but that this work comes with a huge payoff. “It’s incredible to see athletes on the podium wearing the uniform that you’ve helped to develop. I feel very tied into their experience and extremely proud to be a Canadian and to work for a Canadian company that backs its elite athletes.”

Hbc is a gold-level sponsor of Team Canada leading up to Delhi 2010.

fuel advertising – Powering the Dream

At FUEL, we recognize that spirit because we share the same belief in the power of the possible. We draw inspiration from anyone who dares to live and breathe a dream.

Please join us in lending moral and fi nancial support to empower our Canadian athletes…to dream it in Delhi.

The Commonwealth – steeped in history, rooted in friendshipCanada has the privilege and distinction of being the fi rst-ever host of the Commonwealth Games in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario. Since then, Canada’s athletes have won over 1,200 medals and Canadians have developed a special relationship with this event.

The Commonwealth Games holds an important position within the Canadian sport landscape because it brings together nations from every corner of the world in a unique family spirit of shared history, common experiences, and a unifying language.

In the Commonwealth movement, sport is a means to transcend cultural barriers and physical borders. It is a common bond that encourages the pursuit of health and fi tness in

each of the member countries and provides an inspiration for youth to strive for excellence.

Canada’s AthletesEvery four years, Canada sends a team of top athletes to compete and bring home medals for Canada. For some athletes, the Commonwealth Games is the pinnacle of their athletic careers. For others, the Commonwealth Games is a stepping stone to further athletic endeavours. For all athletes, the Commonwealth Games is the experience of a lifetime that few Canadians are privileged to share. The XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India (October 2010) will be no different.

SHARED SPIRIT...

XIX Commonwealth Games – Delhi, IndiaThe XIX Commonwealth Games in 2010 will be the fi rst time that India plays host to this prestigious sporting event. India, known as ‘The Country of the World’ is the most populous nation in the Commonwealth. The Indian tradition of warm hospitality, friendship and treating guests as gods is as old as time itself. These qualities are also the cornerstones of the Commonwealth spirit. India will be sure to extend a warm invitation to the 10 million foreign visitors that are expected to visit Delhi for the Commonwealth Games.

Delhi, India’s capital city known for its mystique and luxury, is one of the world’s oldest living cities, where age-old monuments rub shoulders with modern chrome-and-glass skyscrapers. Delhi is a rich pageantry of colours, culture, art, traditions, varied cuisine and spirituality.

Delhi is also an amazing gateway to a world of incredible tourist experiences and fascinating adventure, including the Taj Mahal (located 200 km away in Agra) and the ‘pink city’ of Jaipur (300 km away).

Join Team Canada in Delhi in 2010 for the experience of a lifetime!

Team Canada’s Financial NeedSending a team of over 400 athletes and 100 support staff over 8,000 kilometres to compete in an international sporting event like the Commonwealth Games is no small feat! It will cost over $5 million to fund Canada’s participation at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) seeks federal government funding and corporate support to offset these costs. Private sector funds are essential. For the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, over 70 Canadian companies backed Team Canada through either investments in sponsorship programs or donations. Canada’s athletes need you!

“I won gold when I was 13 in Kuala Lumpur…it wasn’t

only the medal…it was how people were reacting to the

Commonwealth Games, the happy faces…it was my fi rst

big games, the beginning of my career, it was very special

and an experience I’ll remember all my life.”

Alexandre Despatie, diver
