My honors math class is keeping up the fast pace and will con- tinue to be high rigor in hopes of challenging students. Honors will finish our equations unit and begin probability before the end of the quarter. Completing optional homework assignments, reviewing notes, and class participation will be necessary in order to not fall behind. Keep up the good work in reminding your students to do their homework and study for learning checks and tests! Regular math classes will have their Proportional Re- lationships Test on Monday, October 7. Honors will have their Representations of Equa- tions Test on Monday, October 7. These will be the last major test grades entered before the end of the 1 st Quarter. For the month of October, we will be rocking our way through geology. Our content for this unit primarily focuses on the rock cycle, the different classifications of rock, and the processes by which rocks change or form. Our essential questions for this unit include: How does the rock cycle change the Earth’s formation? What are the three different rock types and their characteristics? Explain how rocks change form over time. Describe how the energy from the Earth and water cause the cycling of rocks. This unit will have some hands-on activities including identifying rock samples, simu- lating erosion and weathering in the classroom, and observing the process of crystalli- zation. At the end of the unit, students should be able to describe the cycling of earth’s materials through melting, crystallization, weathering, deformation, and sedi- mentation, which act together to form minerals and rocks. Students should continue to expect classwork via worksheets, notes, and labs every week, as well as homework on Google Classroom. Paper copies of online homework are available for students upon request. There will not be a big test before the end of the first quarter; we will test for geology at the end of the month / beginning of No- vember. If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please feel free to email me. Thank you for your time! Important Dates: Mr. Pham—Science

Dear Family,

In this unit, students will learn about space exploration, considering concepts related to

space missions and colonizing other worlds. Students will read a variety of texts and lis-

ten to and view media as they discuss the Essential Question for the unit.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

As a class, in small groups, and independently, students will work to answer the question Should we make a home in space? Give your student the opportunity to continue the discus-sion at home.

UNIT 2 SELECTION TITLES, AUTHORS, GENRES

WHOLE-CLASS LEARNING

SMALL-GROUP LEARNING

PERFORMANCE TASKS AND PERFORMANCE-BASED ASSESSMENT

Your student will need to answer the question Should we spend valuable resources on space exploration? He or she will write an argument and give an oral presentation, drawing on knowledge gained from the selections in this unit, as well as from the Performance Tasks he or she completed.

End-of-Unit Performance-Based Assessment

At the end of the unit, your student will pull together his or her learning by completing a Performance-Based Assessment addressing the question Should we spend valuable re-sources on space exploration? In response to that question, he or she will prepare a written argument, and then deliver an oral presentation.

Activities and assignments in Unit 2 will help your student meet the following Common Core State Standards for reading literature and informational texts, writing, and speaking and lis-tening. Here are some key standards students will work toward mastering in this unit.

Ms. Dellinger—Social Studies

As we head in to October, we will continue with our study of Europe. We will take a look at the many countries in Europe and we will touch on WWI and WWII. Our Unit 3 test will be on October 16th. We will then move on to Latin America as we dive into their geography, history and culture. Please help your student by staying on top of ParentVue to assist them in keeping their work up to date. We cover a lot of information and it is their responsibility to stay on top of it all. Most everything is uploaded to google classroom for ease of access. All missing assignments over Europe will be due by Friday, October 11th.

TEAM REMINDERS TEAM FIELD TRIP—We will be going to Newman University on Friday, October

11 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. Students must have their signed permission slip turned in to be able to go. Be on the lookout for these!

Students should bring their binders with them to school every day. Their bind-er should always have their agenda, pencil pouch, and notebook paper in it, as these are necessary for the classroom.

Please check ParentVue/StudentVue to view your students’ assignments and grades. These are updated at least weekly and if you have questions or con-cerns, please email.
