Obesity in America Today
Children ages 2-515. 8 % are overweight
13. 5 % are obese
Adults ages 18 +64 . 8 % are overweight
29 . 6 % are obese
Why are we so overweight?
• Lack of exercise- Children are spending more and more
time watching T.V.- Schools are cutting physical education
• Too many calories- sugary drinks, candy, chips, etc.
• Media- More than 33 % of food advertising is
for candy and sweets- Less than 5 % of food advertising is for healthy foods
How does this affect our students?• High blood pressure• High cholesterol
• Asthma• Sleep Apnea• Joint pain
• Poor Self-Esteem• Type 2 diabetes• Lower I.Q’s
How obesity will affect our students later:
• Obese children are more likely to become obese
adults• A lifetime of bad eating habits can be damaging• They will be at a higher
risk for heart disease, diabetes and certain types
of cancer
How to influence our students:
• Be a good example• Teach them all you can about
healthy eating habits• Encourage physical activity• Make healthy eating fun!
