Why should we teach nutrition?

• Climbing obesity rates and inactivity• To set a positive role model• To satisfy the standards:

NHES 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion

and disease prevention.NHES 3: Students will demonstrate the

ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks.

Obesity in America Today

Children ages 2-515. 8 % are overweight

13. 5 % are obese

Adults ages 18 +64 . 8 % are overweight

29 . 6 % are obese

Why are we so overweight?

• Lack of exercise- Children are spending more and more

time watching T.V.- Schools are cutting physical education

• Too many calories- sugary drinks, candy, chips, etc.

• Media- More than 33 % of food advertising is

for candy and sweets- Less than 5 % of food advertising is for healthy foods

= 500+ calories

“Have all those calories your way.”

= 600+ calories

How does this affect our students?• High blood pressure• High cholesterol

• Asthma• Sleep Apnea• Joint pain

• Poor Self-Esteem• Type 2 diabetes• Lower I.Q’s

How obesity will affect our students later:

• Obese children are more likely to become obese

adults• A lifetime of bad eating habits can be damaging• They will be at a higher

risk for heart disease, diabetes and certain types

of cancer

How to influence our students:

• Be a good example• Teach them all you can about

healthy eating habits• Encourage physical activity• Make healthy eating fun!
