STEM Network Design

FabEd’s mission is to facilitate integrating the enormous potential of digital fabrication with the tactical and

practical needs of schools and school districts.

A Network of Egypt STEM Schools

• TIES, in partnership with World Learning, 21PSTEM, and the Franklin Institute is creating 5 STEM schools in Egypt

• As a part of the school design, TIES is working with the Fab Foundation and Fab Lab Cairo to install, integrate, and develop Fab Labs in these schools

• The first two schools, 6th of October and Ma’adi, are located in suburbs surrounding Cairo

Trans-Disciplinary Capstones

• Set of big ideas and essential questions for the grading period

• Capstones incorporate required benchmarks, Fab Lab components, and Grand Challenges for Egypt’s development (water, energy, etc.)

• Community and Network partnerships are crucial!

A Network of Egypt Fab Labs

An important component of the design of the Egypt STEM schools is the Leveraging and Networking of Regional /Community Partners in Egypt.

This includes Fab Lab Cairo in addition to the school Fab Labs.

• Industry partners are engaging directly with Fab Labs in middle schools, high schools, community colleges, and communities across the country. In many places Fab Labs are resources for developing and retraining the local workforce.

• As part of these partnerships, industries are working with local schools and community colleges on projects, courses, and internships to encourage skills that empower learners to transition seamlessly between school and work in their local area.

• Industry partners plan to augment the program with industry-targeted equipment and expertise to mentor and engage students in apprenticeship-like training experiences for middle, high, and post secondary schools that would be integrated into their education.

• In some areas community colleges and industries are partnering around the IT aspects of the Fab Lab through focuses on computer programming, networking, and digital design.

• Fab Labs have also begun to partner with ATE centers to help them fulfill their mission of “formulating new strategies to educate more students to become full-fledged participants in the world-class workforce the U.S. needs to compete globally.”
