I am extremely proud to have developedHull University Unions first ever Student LedTeaching Awards. For the first time, we areproviding students with the opportunity torecognise and reward the members of staffthat have made a significantly positive impacton their student experience and their personaldevelopment whilst studying at the Universityof Hull.

Hull University Union has successfullyengaged over 583 students to put forwardnominations for University of Hull members ofstaff a response which has been extremelyoverwhelming. I would like to thank the HUUEducation Zone committee for all their amazingwork. The Zone were collectively responsiblefor deciding the categories of the awards andalso the development of the criteria for eachaward category. The Committee have beeninstrumental in promoting the awards tostudents and also in the painstaking process ofjudging the awards (which took 5 hours!!). Theyhave really shown themselves to be extremelyactive this year, and the success of the awardsis no doubt a consequence of their hard work. The awards have been developed not onlyto celebrate excellence in teaching and toreward good practice, but it is also a campaignto improve the quality of teaching at ourinstitution. By effectively disseminating goodpractice that we have identified from ournominations process, Hull University Unionhopes to inspire other members of staff withinthe institution to improve as teachers or toadopt more innovative, engaging teachingstyles. This publication serves to give other

members of staff a flavour for what studentsperceived to be excellent teaching practices. We will be disseminating this publication acrossthe institution, to show others what deservesto be recognised.

583 nomination forms are not just pieces ofpaper. They are 10s of 1000s of words, writtenby students, to acknowledge what they perceiveexcellent teaching to be. HUU will be usingthese forms as qualitative data to define whatstudent expectations are in relation to learningand teaching. For example, by unpacking thecomments from students in the nominationforms, we can better understand what goodfeedback means to students... What greatteaching involves... and various other questionsthat we have never known the answers to.

Our Student Led Teaching Awards are alsodesigned to raise the profile of the impact oflearning and teaching. In an era of increasedstudent fees, there is a temptation for
