Teaching a Lesson

Introduction

Hi, and welcome to My Savvas Training. I’m Becky, and in this tutorial, I’m going to outline the basic parts of teaching a myWorld Interactive lesson. This will help give you a better understanding of what you and your students will be doing during a typical lesson.

As a teacher, I know how valuable your time is, so let’s get right to it.

Understand Lesson Structure

Teaching a lesson with myWorld Interactive is pretty simple. There are three basic parts of a lesson:

Prepare to Read

Read the Lesson and

Lesson Check

Each part has a variety of activities to engage students and support learning.

Prepare to Read

Each lesson starts with the Prepare to Read teacher guidance along with a variety of student activities.

The Unlock the Big Question Teacher’s Edition (or TE) guidance helps students focus on a compelling question linked to The Big Question introduced in the Chapter Opener.

During the Introduce the Vocabulary section, the teacher reads the vocabulary words and reviews the definitions.

In the student edition worktext, the vocabulary words are highlighted. In the Realize Reader student eText, the words are hyperlinked with mouse-over definitions.

The Jumpstart Activity actively engages your students in an activity related to the content, which helps activate background knowledge.

The online Interactivity provides an opportunity for you to get students excited about the content within the lesson.

Support for English Language Learners note boxes are located throughout the lesson to help you differentiate the lesson content for English learners.

During the Read the Lesson portion, the TE questions and teaching strategies, listed along the side panels, help you model active reading and learning for your students.

Using Skill Strategies to Focus Learning

Here you’ll find a variety of skill strategies, such as:

Main Idea and Details

Interpret Visuals

Compare and Contrast, and

Draw Conclusions.

These and many other strategies help you focus student learning on important content and check understanding.

The Big Question

The TE guidance also provides questions to ensure students continue to think about The Big Question as they read through the lesson.

Active Classroom

If you want students involved and excited about the content, check out the Active Classroom strategies located throughout each lesson.

They include activity suggestions that use various grouping arrangements to support active learning such as creating a collage related to the content.

Online Interactivities

Also, have you noticed these red Interactivity icons? These icons let you and your students know that there are online interactivities on Savvas Realize related to the content.

Just remember, you must first assign the online activities to your students in order for them to complete and submit their work online.

Don’t forget to check for any online, lesson level Teacher Resources as well.

In Grades 4 and 5, there are online interactivities that provide summaries of key information. These Key Ideas highlight the main points of the lesson.

Check Understanding with Reading Checks

Reading Checks are located throughout the lesson to help check student understanding. Students can write responses to the Reading Checks in their worktexts or use their online notebooks to respond.

Help with Differentiating Instruction

Finding ways to differentiate instruction for the various levels within my class can sometimes be quite time-consuming.

myWorld Interactive has helped simplify this important task by providing explicit differentiation ideas at point of use.

Just look for the green Differentiated Instruction boxes throughout each lesson.

Additional Support

There are additional support boxes in the Teacher’s Edition as well. These can provide extra guidance related to Common Misconceptions, Curriculum Connections, and Background Information.

Word Wise Strategies

Additionally, Word Wise features embedded throughout the lesson, help teach your students strategies for working out the meaning of unfamiliar words in informational text.

Lesson Checks

The Lesson Checks portion of the lesson is where you check, review and evaluate your students’ understanding of key objectives. Students can respond to prompts in their worktexts or online, through the notebook feature.

Interactive Online Lesson Review

The interactive online Lesson Review helps you check your students’ understanding and provides immediate feedback.

These can include multiple-choice and a variety of drag-and-drop responses.

Online Lesson Quiz

How would you like to assess students’ understanding and prescribe remediation or enrichment all in one easy step?

Yep, I said, one step!

Simply assign the online Lesson Quiz and check the box that says, Automatically assign remediation and enrichment activities to a student if this assessment shows that it’s needed.

Another advantage of the online Lesson Quiz is that it provides instant feedback with a Score Summary.
