When it comes to information, the world ischanging rapidly.

Every day, new technologies make it possible touse and share information in new ways throughWeb sites, e-mail, podcasts and interactive software.

Like the rest of the world, newspapers arechanging the ways they deliver information.

In addition to Web sites with text and otherresources, newspapers now are offering readerselectronic editions that re-create the experience ofreading the print paper with computer technology.

These e-Editions contain everything print news-papers have — distinct sections, classified and dis-play advertising, photos and graphics — but withthe convenience of navigating through home andschool computers.

Readers can browse the newspaper page bypage as they would do with a paper copy, or theycan use the tools of computer technology to focusand speed up the search for information.

Toolbars, hot links and interactive features makeinformation available with the click of a mouse ora few key strokes. And search functions allowreaders to browse related news from recent editionsor seek information by keyword.

Newspaper e-Editions are an exceptional tool foreducation because they offer student readers thebest of both print and electronic information.

They provide the structure and comprehensiveness

that long have made print newspapers an effectiveteaching tool for everything from test scores to civic awareness.

At the same time, e-Editions capitalize on students’interest in the Internet, introduce the resources ofinformation technology and strengthen the elec-tronic skills students will need for career success inthe 21st century.

Learning to use new technology, of course, pres-ents challenges for both students and teachers.

This curriculum package — “Super Skills for e-Editions” — has been created to ease the transi-tion to electronic newspapers through a series ofready-to-use activity sheets.

The package starts with activities introducing keyskills needed for using e-Editions and then demon-strates how e-Editions can be effective for teachingmath, science, social studies and language arts.

All activities are tiered by grade level, and eachincludes the educational standards and skills it isdesigned to address. (Students in all grades maybenefit from doing all the technology activities, however.)

Using an e-Edition in place of a print newspapermay seem strange and unsettling at first.

After completing the activities in this package, however, both students and teachers will be morecomfortable and adept at navigating the dynamic, new resources of e-Editions.

LEARNING STANDARDS/SKILLS:

The United Nations’ International Labor Organization recently predicted that China, India and Eastern Europe will take jobs away from car workers in America and the rest of the western world over the next 10 years, as the auto industry moves parts-making activities to countries where salaries are a fraction of whatthey are here. In China, for example, auto industry workers makebetween 50 cents and $1.30 an hour. Wages in the U.S. are as much as 25 times higher. Poor New Jersey. The number of millionaires there declined, according to the state’s Statistics of Incomereport. In 2004, it said 8,300 New Jerseyans reported taxable income of $1 million or more in 2002 (thelatest year for which statistics were available). This was the second straight year the number had gonedown, and way short of the record high of 12,365 in 2000. Officials think it’s because of the state’s pooreconomy and the fact that even some bigwigs aren’t getting year-end raises and bonuses anymore. Seewhat your e-Edition is reporting about the economy and the nation’s job situation. Write a short predic-tion of what you think will happen in your city or state this year. Use math to back up your prediction.

Bacteria are a significant concern for medicine and the study of biology. Bacteria are mostly one-celledorganisms that can be found anywhere. They often are the source of illness or infection. Because theyare easily spread by touch and moisture, they make it possible to spread disease from one person toanother. In pairs, find places shown in your e-Edition that would be good hosts for infectious bacteria orsituations that would help them spread. Then draw up five health tips for limiting the spread of bacteriathat could cause illness.

LEARNING STANDARDS/SKILLS:

Insects represent 80 percent of all animal species. There are more insect species on the planet than allother animals put together. Insects play an important role in the web of life. They are a source of foodfor birds, reptiles, fish and mammals. They pollinate plants that produce food, and loosen soil that promotes growth. Some control other insect pests and weeds. Test your insect knowledge by picking a food from an ad in your e-Edition, or a clothing product made of natural material. In the spaces below brainstorm as many ways as possible that insects made the product possible. Remember that the “Insect Support” may be indirect as well as direct!
