Grammar Land is a two-level series of grammar reference and practice books, specifically designed for Greek Junior classes. It accompanies and complements Wonderland Junior Aand Wonderland Junior B, but it can also be used alongside any main Junior course.

The series has been carefully designed with the following aims in mind:● to introduce young learners to grammar through amusing and memorable contexts that

are relevant and appropriate to their age and level. A unique feature of this series is theuse of well-loved Disney characters, whom learners already know and love.

● to offer learners plenty of support in their effort to learn through the use of clear grammarboxes, which explain key points in the learners’ own language.

● to provide carefully staged and varied practice that will help learners consolidate theirknowledge of new grammar so that they will be able to use it confidently on their own.

The second book in the series consists of:● twenty core units.● three revision units.● an English–Greek wordlist.● a list of irregular verbs.

PresentationsGrammar is presented through cartoons which feature well-loved Disney characters such asMickey and Minnie Mouse, Mickey’s nephews Morty and Ferdie, Donald and Daisy Duck,Donald’s nephews Huey, Louie and Dewey, Goofy and other friends, as well as charactersfrom major Disney films. These characters appear in various interesting and amusingsituations throughout the book, and will motivate and engage young learners. This approachis conducive to learning and facilitates the acquisition of new language. The grammaticalfocus of the presentations is always clear and the lexical items used are at an appropriatelevel so that learners are not hampered by language that is difficult to understand.

The order in which grammatical items are introduced in the book follows the naturalprogression of language development. However, teachers should feel free to teach units inany order which is suitable for the needs of a particular class or situation.

Not all units are of the same length, and their extent varies depending on the grammarbeing taught. Units that cover a lot of material, such as the one on the Present simple, for example, are split up into two sections, each with a different presentation. The first sectiondeals with the affirmative, while the second deals with the negative and question forms. Thisgives teachers the flexibility to progress at different rates according to the needs of eachindividual class. Younger learners may need more time to assimilate a particular aspect ofgrammar, whereas children who have already had some exposure to the language may beable to progress faster.

Grammar boxesGrammar boxes appear immediately after the presentations, on the same page, and helpmake it clear to young learners what the focus of the unit is. The key features of eachgrammar point are explained in Greek, and there are plenty of examples to illustrate them.Teachers should stress how important it is for learners to use the grammar boxes while theyare doing their homework or revising.

Introduction

The exercisesThe exercises that follow each presentation and grammar box have been carefully written sothat they guide learners gently through the assimilation process. They progress fromcontrolled to freer practice, one step at a time, in order to help build learners’ confidence. Some units end with ‘open’ exercises, in which pupils can relate the grammar of the unit toreal life by using the language they have learnt to talk about themselves, their friends andfamily. The content and context of the exercises is appropriate for the age and level ofyoung learners and the lexical items used are carefully monitored. ‘New’ words areintroduced sparsely, and known vocabulary is recycled whenever possible, since lexis shouldnot hinder or distract pupils from acquiring an understanding of the new grammar.

Revision unitsThere are three revision units, one after Unit 7, one after Unit 13 and one after Unit 20.Again, the lexis used here is largely known to learners by this stage, and the exercise typesare also familiar.

WordlistThis wordlist is at the end of the book, and includes the key lexical items in each unit, together with a Greek translation for easy reference in the class or at home.

Irregular verbsThis lists the common irregular verbs that occur in the book.

The Teacher’s Book consists of:● an introduction to the Grammar Land series, with teaching tips to help the teacher exploit

the material in the Pupils’ Book.● the key to the exercises and revision units in the Pupils’ Book.● twelve quizzes, which cover the grammar taught in the Pupils’ Book, and which help

evaluate pupils’ progress.● three progress tests: Progress Test 1 (Units 1–7), Progress Test 2 (Units 8–13) and Progress

Test 3 (Units 14–20).● the key to the quizzes.● the key to the progress tests.

Teaching tipsPresentations● The teacher should fully exploit the unique feature of this series, which is the use of Disney

characters in the presentations. The lesson could start with a warm-up activity, in whichpupils are invited to identify the characters and the context in which they appear. Thepresentation could be followed by a discussion in which pupils relate the story/situation totheir own personal experience.

● If the teacher thinks that any of the lexical items in the presentation are likely to hinderpupils’ understanding, it might be a good idea to pre-teach them.

● Pupils could learn the lines of the characters in the presentation and act out the dialoguein class. They could even work in pairs or groups and write their own version of thepresentation. This could be done in class or set for homework.

● The text of the presentation could be written on the board, but with the key grammaticalitems gapped. Pupils could then be asked to complete them.

Introduction

Grammar boxes● The grammar box comes immediately after the presentation. This position helps focus

pupils’ attention on the grammar of that unit. The grammar boxes are a useful tool: theyprovide necessary information on form and/or function, and explain key points in thelearners’ own language.

● The teacher could begin by reading through the grammar box with the class. Then pupilscould read aloud the examples in the grammar box. This will give them a chance tobecome familiar with the pronunciation, stress and/or intonation.

● It might be a good idea to invite pupils to add to the examples given in the grammarbox. Alternatively, the teacher might choose to write some more examples on the board.

● When the teacher is confident that pupils feel comfortable with the new grammar, he/shecan ask them to circle or underline all the instances they can find in the presentation.

The exercises● There are very simple instructions, and the first item in each exercise is done as an example.

This makes the exercises suitable for homework, even if pupils are very young. However, learners need to be clear and confident about what they are expected to do, so it might bea good idea to do one or two more items in class, or go through an exercise orally first. Theexercise can then be set for homework. This will benefit any pupils who are having difficulty, and they will be able to do the exercise on their own with more confidence.

● Pupils should be encouraged to ask questions whenever they have difficulty in producingan answer. The help they receive could be in the form of guidance or a gentle reminderof how they can find the answer themselves.

● While going over the answers to an exercise in class, it is a good idea to encourage thepupils themselves to decide whether an answer is correct rather than simply reading outfrom the answer key. Pupils could decide by voting for the correct answer if the decision isnot unanimous from the beginning. This is a chance to monitor how well the lesson hasgone down with the class – the majority of pupils should have no trouble in producing thecorrect answers immediately. If there seems to be confusion, this is an indication that someremedial practice is necessary.

Revision unitsRevision units allow the teacher to monitor pupils’ progress. They provide an indication of whichgrammatical areas might need additional practice. They could be done as an informal class test, after pupils have revised at home. If they are done as a test, they should be done and correctedin the classroom, with pupils checking and correcting their work themselves. Alternatively, revisionunits could be set for homework, as a preparation for a more formal class test.

Quizzes in the Teacher’s BookThere are twelve photocopiable quizzes in the Teacher’s Book, which cover the twenty units ofthe Pupils’ Book. They are a quick and easy way to assess whether pupils have understoodand assimilated new language. Most tasks are multiple choice format, which young learnersfind easy to do. As pupils are still young, it is a good idea to reward them for their effortsand help relieve them of any anxiety they might feel about doing quizzes. An easy andinexpensive way is to use ‘performance stickers’ rather than scoring.

Progress testsThere are also three progress tests which can be used as a more formal means of evaluatinglearners’ progress. They also help the teacher to assess how well pupils have assimilated newlanguage in the long term.

WordlistThe wordlist can be used for reference at home and for revising vocabulary. The teachermight also use it to pre-teach any key vocabulary before a presentation.
