Scarborough Spa at Night, Francis Sydney Muschamp
This painting commemorates the grand reopening of the Spa after it was destroyed by fire in 1876.
It shows a typical social scene at the Spa at a time when people showed their wealth through their
clothing.

bathing machines on the beach.

How does this compare to what people wear now on the beach?
John Atkinson Grimshaw – Atkinson Grimshaw was born in Leeds and began work as a clerk
for the Great Northern Railway. Later he painted moonlight scenes like the ones here. He rented
a big house in Scarborough called ‘Castle by the Sea’.

A fishing vessel is seen labouring through heavy seas whipped up by a south-easterly gale, anxiously watched by a group including family members which has gathered on the quayside. A brazier has been lit to warn the skipper not to attempt to enter the harbour but to wait for more favourable conditions or head for an alternative haven. What do you like about these paintings? Scarborough from the Sea, James Wilson Carmichael
John Wilson Carmichael, a marine painter, was born at Newcastle Upon Tyne. The picture shows many fishing vessels in and around Scarborough Harbour. In the background
the Spa bridge, the spa itself and the Grand Hotel can be identified.
