Welcome to Dr. TEFL’s guide of 66 teach English abroad countries.
We recommend that you get a TEFL certificate that includes teaching practice before
you start looking for a job teaching English abroad. All money is shown in US Dollars.
An explanation of the information shown for each country
Country name, shown in alphabetical order.
Qualifications you will need. NOTE: where it says "degree preferred" it does not
mean you cannot work there is you do not have a degree. An Associates will
often be OK and so will 5 or more years work experience that does not have to
be teaching related.
Contract durations vary but the vast majority run up to one academic year and
usually can be renewed.
Best hiring times show the peak months when schools look for teachers.
Holidays shows each countries standard national holiday periods.
Final interview in country indicates whether you will be expected to attend a
final in person interview in the school before they decide to hire you.
Immigration indicates what type of visa you will need. NOTE: Some countries,
like Mexico, that can issue work visas will ONLY issue one to someone who has
a TEFL or TESOL certificate from a bona-fide examination board or university.
There are plenty of other "accredited" courses out there but most immigration
departments will not recognise their certificates.
Main learner age groups is self-explanatory
Cost of living provides a link to Numbeo where by default you can check out
prices in the country. The default shown is in USD. You may change this and,
where available, enquire about a specific city. Numbeo is maintained by people
who live in these countries.
Initial cost is shown in US Dollars. Initial cost only applies if you are not in the
country where you want to teach. This is an approximate figure in USD showing
how much you should budget to spend per month until you find a job. Initial
cost DOES NOT include flight costs.
Paid/subsidised accommodation shows whether you will get this or not. If you
do not, you will have to pay for your accommodation out of your earnings- If
you have to pay yourself, aost schools and agencies will advise you about where
to live and what to budget.
Paid flight shows whether or not the school or agency will pay for your fligfht to
the school's country. If they do not, you will have to pay for yourself. If you are
already in the country, budgeting for a paid flight is not needed.
VISA REQUIREMENTS
All countries will demand that you have a valid passport with at least six months
validity remaining before it expires. Check your passport BEFORE you do anything
else.
If you do not have a passport, apply for one now.
TOURIST VISAS
Tourist visa requirements are not the same in all countries and it depends what
passport you hold. Tourist visa durations are not the same in all countries and it
depends what passport you hold.
Some countries require that you pay for a tourist visa, others do not.
There are many variables for getting a tourist visa so it is VITAL that you check with
the country’s consulate what the requirements are.
STUDENT VISAS
Some countries (for example Spain, France and Thailand) will grant you a student
visa if you want to study abroad in the country. Student visas usually cover studies in
further education institutions and authorised language schools. Student visas also
usually have a work provision for you to work part-time while you are studying. The
latter is certainly true for Spain.
There are many variables for getting a student visa so it is VITAL that you check with
the country’s consulate what the requirements are.
WORK VISAS
Some countries will allow you to either apply for a work permit before you travel or
convert a tourist visa to a work visa when you are in the country.
Getting a work visa is never a simple process.
