Introduction

Reading, Writing, Speaking and ListeningEnglish is all about communication. It’s fundamental to understanding what we read and hear, and organising how we write and speak. English is about the stories we read for pleasure, and the books and web pages we read for information. It’s also about the emails you send to friends and the words of your favourite song or poem.

The Targeting English series of Student Books and Teaching Guides is a comprehensive, integrated scheme for exploring the many ways in which we use English. The series provides comprehensive coverage of the primary English curriculum.

Targeting English will help students to fully explore English. Each Targeting English student book contains high-interest fi ction and nonfi ction text samples. Themed units open with a variety of text samples for students to read. Each text adds something different to the topic and has its own purpose, audience, structure and composition.

As you complete the activities in this book, you’ll discover that English follows patterns. Some types of texts behave in the same way, and once you recognise the patterns, reading and writing become easier and more enjoyable. You can read and listen with more understanding and fi nd better ways to organise what you want to say or write.

Texts are drawn from literature (classic and contemporary), media and everyday life. They include books, magazines, brochures, websites, SMS messages, emails and advertisements. The real text samples used in Targeting English mean that grammar and text features are studied in context. Many of the text samples come from books that are readily available, so expanding each topic with further reading is easy to achieve.

About this student bookEach unit starts with a double-page of texts on a topic, such as guitars, gorillas or giving blood. Read all the texts. Some of them have a similar look to each other, while others look different. Some have titles, while others don’t. Look at the pictures. What do they tell you about the topic? Do the pictures have captions?

Following the text pages are six pages of activities about the texts. Complete the questions about text features (In the texts) and comprehension (Read and learn), and the writing and drawing activities (Your turn). Use a pencil. If you want to change what you’ve written, rub it out and try again. You’ll also need some coloured pens or pencils.

Activities at the end of the unit focus on an aspect of English grammar, such as adverbs or sentences.

Word Hunt! — Find the letters and make a word! You’ll fi nd letters scattered over the pages of each unit. Write the letters you fi nd on the top row of the answer box in each unit. Then, unscramble the letters to write a word on the bottom row. (HINT: the word will have something to do with the topic of the unit!)

My Stuff pages — these pages are a place for you to express yourself! Write down what you think about the units you’ve just completed, and note down things you have read, seen or been to lately.
