Summit Learning

9th and 10th Grade

Students in 9th and 10th grade are participating in Summit Learning. Their teachers spent the summer re-viewing curriculum and attending trainings to prepare for the school year. Our teachers and staff are excited for the year ahead. They are the driving force behind bringing Summit Learning to Brimm. With Summit Learning, teachers play a very important role in students’ learning. Teachers use their expertise to:

Help students develop lifelong Cognitive Skills, such as using sources and contributing to discussions;

Identify when a student is struggling and as a result, support them by with one-to-one guidance or other forms of instruction to meet their needs; and

Coach students toward achieving their personal goals.

Teachers are very actively involved in project work with students, teaching and reteaching when students need instruction, monitoring their personalized learning time, and helping students set and achieve their goals. If you walk into a Summit Learning classroom, you’re less likely to see the teacher standing in front of the classroom teaching the same lesson to every student; instead, teachers will lead class discussions, work with small groups of students, and provide individualized support.

You will notice several changes this year:

Your student will be assigned a mentor, who acts as their advocate both inside and outside of the classroom. Their mentor may be a teacher, a school leader, or other administrator. Mentors will meet with your student one-on-one weekly to support their personal goals.

Your student’s grades will be based on mastery of skills and content knowledge. With Summit Learning, students are graded not only on the content they’ve learned, but also on their ability to master cognitive skills needed for success in college and career - skills like analysis, presentation, and writing. This means that grades will look a bit different than what you’ve seen in the past.

Your student will begin using the Summit Learning Platform, an online tool that organizes curriculum, projects, and assess-ments—and supports students in setting and tracking goals for their learning. The Platform gives families a window onto what their students are learning daily, and it allows teachers to see how their students are performing and use to that information to personalize instruction and provide additional support when needed. In the coming weeks, we will share more information with you about how you can access the Platform to see in real-time what your child is working on and how you can support.

Over the next few months, there will be opportunities to learn more about Summit Learning and how to sup-port your student. Stay tuned for information about our first information session soon. In the meantime, please let me know if you have any questions—and enjoy the first week of school!

Sincerely,

Ms. Gehring

Brimm Summer Internships Over the summer, Brimm students interned around South Jersey and Philadelphia. Seniors Tyaerra Brin-son, Maia Cone and Kade-Jay Thomas were part of the CHOP-RISES internship at the Children’s Hospi-tal of Philadelphia. The students practiced lab experiences and explored medical careers under the guid-ance of pediatric mentors. CHOP had a great article about their summer experience. Click here to read more about it!

Juniors Janiyah Taylor and Abigail Rivera-Mercado interned at the Rowan University Biomedical Engi-neering School. Abigail and Janiyah took part in a project funded by the National Science Foundation that hopes to understand how blood vessels in the brain are affected by diseases like Alzheimer’s, stroke, and aneurysm. They learned a technique called “microfabrication” that allowed them to make small devices that contain the blood vessels that are grown in the lab. During their time at Rowan, Abigail and Janiyah also learned how to use computer-aided-design software to create their own device that can study how blood vessels in the brain remove the proteins that create the plaques observed in Alzheimer’s patients. The two also took part in laboratory meetings and shared their progress with the rest of the research team.

At the Coriell Institute for Medical Research in Camden, New Jersey, seniors Kyaire Clayton, Shania Mal-donado, Estassy Ramos, and Pamela Williams spent their summer doing genetic research, learning labora-tory techniques, and assisting Coriell scientists in pursuit of their mission. Coriell Institute's mission is to accelerate scientific discovery by generating world-class biomaterials and conducting groundbreaking re-search in biobanking, personalized medicine and stem cell biology.

Trinity Allen, Orquidea Jiminez, and Dian Pagan interned at the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority in Camden, New Jersey. As Green Am-bassadors, they worked to transform the city into a greener, safer community while gaining some valuable educational and employment skills. Part of their experience included installing rain gardens and touring environmental protec-tion facilities all while learning about environmental science from local, state, and national agencies.

Juniors Christine Chukwenyere, Dynazia Holness, Iyana Lugo, and Mya Matthews interned at Cooper Hos-pital in Camden, New Jersey. They interned in various departments and learned about hospital operations. All of our interns gained valuable experience while serving the community!

Incoming Brimm freshman had the opportunity to participate in the Virtua/76ers basketball camp at the Kroc Center on August 7. Students learned dribbling, passing and dribbling skills as well as teamwork. Students had a lesson on sports nutrition and learned some dance moves from the 76ers dance team. All students left the camp with a free pair of new sneakers to start the school year.

Happy Birthday!

Message from Class of 2019

President, Kyaire Clayton Welcome back Seniors! I am really excited about our senior year. We have made great memories at Brimm and this year, we will make more. Homecoming, prom, and graduation are all ahead of us. Let’s stay focused and finish this!

Message from Class of 2019 Advisors,

Mr. Carcanague and Mrs. Wallenburg Welcome back Class of 2019! This is the year we've all been waiting for, ever since you walked through our doors for the first time in September of 2015! We are looking forward to everything we have planned, and/or will be planning - Homecoming, Prom, Senior Week, and graduation. But don't forget a few important things: 1. Make sure you complete your 100 hours of community service! It could be helping

out your favorite teacher (hint, hint), working at a hospital after school, or cleaning up your community. Please get your forms signed and turned in!

2. Many of you still need to pay class dues! Don't wait until the last minute - $280 is a

lot of money to drop at one time. Turn in what you can, when you can to Ms. Wallen-burg and HOLD ON to your receipts!!!

3. If you have any questions, complaints or comments about this year's events, please

reach out to your class officers and discuss with them! Go Class of 2019!!!
