Rio Olympics Silver Medalist PV Sindhu, Bronze medalist Sakshi Malik, Gymnast Dipa Karmakar and Shooter Jitu Rai were conferred with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards. The Award is given for the most outstanding performance by a sportsperson over a period of four years. Six coaches have been honoured with Dronacharya Awards. They include Nagapuri Ramesh for Athletics, Sagar Mal Dhayal for Boxing and Raj Kumar Sharma for Cricket. Dipa Karmakar's coach Bishweshwar Nandi also received the award. The Dronacharya Award for Lifetime contribution has been conferred on S. Pradeep Kumar for Swimming and Mahabir President confers Khel Ratna to Rio Olympics athletes Singh for Wrestling. Apart from this, 15 sports persons were given Arjuna Awards. They include Olympian runner Lalita Babar, boxer Shiva Thapa and wrestler Vinesh Phogat. Athlete Satti Geetha, hockey player Sylvanus Dung Dung and Rower Rajendra Pralhad Shelke were given the Dhyanchand Award. The day is celebrated to honor legendary hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand Singh who was born on 29th August, 1905. On the eve of National Sports Day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met P V Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, Dipa Karmakar and Jitu Rai at his residence in New Delhi. He also met the LG OUTLINES PRIORITIES 'Power and tourism are my two priority sectors for development in isles' Port Blair, Aug 29 "Power and tourism are the two sectors with immense growth potentials and are in my priority list for development in these Islands", said the Lt Governor of A&N Islands, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi in his maiden interview with Senior Journalist and Producer of "Namo Impact"-Sarva Dharma Sangam TV, Shri Atul Singhal, shortly after assuming the Office of the Lt Governor of the UT. Outlining his focussed areas for development, he thanked the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modiji for giving him the opportunity to serve these Islands. "There is immense scope of development and these Islands fair better from other parts of the country in terms of performance", he said. As regard tourism sector, the Lt. Governor said these Islands can be developed as most sought after tourism destinations. Maldives are much popular in terms of tourist destination in the world in comparison to Port Blair, which needs to be developed on a faster pace. For tourism to be developed, connectivity is essential. The undersea cable project is at advanced stage while the air route and sea route connectivity is also essential for development of tourism in A&N Islands. "If we want to develop these Islands on the lines of Maldives, we will have to provide all these facilities", he observed. Turning to power, the Lt. Governor said power generation in A&N Islands, by diesel is costlier and also contributes to pollution. This has to be replaced by developing more solar energy/power. The vast coastline in these Islands also provides ample scope for developing wind energy. "My priority will be to upgrade power generation by propagating solar and wind energy in these Islands", he said and added that tourists visit these Islands from different countries to enjoy the pollution free atmosphere and clean & green environment existing here. "If we stick to diesel generated power system, it will only contribute to pollution. Therefore, it will be my first priority to increase power generation with concerted efforts on green energy", he said. On improving the mobile and internet connectivity, the Lt. Governor said much progress has been made towards improvement in the connectivity, and the same will continue in future. Once the undersea cable connecting Chennai and Andaman & Nicobar Islands becomes operational, the connectivity problems in these Islands will be solved forever. Staff Reporter Port Blair, Aug 29 In a significant development for the Animal Husbandry sector of these islands, the Teressa Goat and Nicobari Pig have been recognized as new breeds of India by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Karnal, Haryana. This was disclosed during a joint press conference by the Director CIARI and Director AH&VS. Addressing media personnel, the Director CIARI, Dr.S.Dam Roy remarked that it is a proud moment for the Islands as well as ICAR-CIARI, as two indigenous breeds of A&N Islands viz. Nicobari pigs & Teresa goats were recently registered as breeds by ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources at Karnal, Haryana. He informed that with the registration of these two breeds, our Islands have one breed each of poultry (Nicobari fowl), goat (Teressa goats) and Pig (Nicobari pigs). The registration of these three breeds will help in conservation and sustainable utilization of animal genetic resources of the Islands, he said. He stressed that it is very important to register such unique biodiversity of our country and called upon scientists and technical teams to register all new breeds, particularly of A&N Islands. He also informed that registration of specific variety of rice cultivation in Isles is in process. Acknowledging the contributions made by eight planned manner. Transport Department to hold 'Checking Abhiyan - Sugam' from Sept. 1 Port Blair, Aug 29 Transport Department is responsible for providing satisfactory public road transport service to the commuters of this UT. The service is provided from 14 STS Units in 12 Islands from Diglipur to Campbell Bay. Apart from satisfactory service to the commuters, it is also the responsibility of Department to ensure that no precious Government revenue is leaked. At the same time it also needs to be ensured that bus are plied in clean and hygienic condition. For ensuring this, the Department will be holding a month long special drive 'Checking Abhiyan - Sugam' from Sept. 1 to 30.The 'abhiyan' will be carried out in all the 14 STS units simultaneously. During the 'abhiyan', all the Checking staff will be undertaking checking of buses on various parameters such as ticketless travel, wearing of uniforms by the crews, cleanliness of buses, commuter grievances, over speeding, skipping of stoppages, maintenance of schedule timings, pilferage of HSD oil/ Government revenue, displaying of ID cards by the Transport Staff etc. All commuters have been advised to cooperate with the Department by tendering exact fare and demand for tickets without fail for their journey. Army Recruitment Rally from in Port Blair from Sept 10-12 Distribution of LED Bulbs at Nicobar Port Blair, Aug 29 All domestic consumers of Electricity Department, Nicobar Division (Car Nicobar, Katchal, Kamorta and Campbell Bay) have been informed that 9 Watt LED bulb will be distributed under DELP-SOP programme from 1st week of September 2016. The LED bulbs will be distributed to all the domestic consumers @ 4 LED bulbs per consumer on payment of Rs.10/- for each LED bulb. The consumer will have to handover 4 ordinary bulbs (60 Watts) or CFL (20 Watt) or higher rating to the distribution authority. The consumers also need to produce the latest bill payment receipt for receiving the LED bulbs. Though a large number of consumers had cleared their water dues, yet a good number of consumers did not pay the same. The consumerwill have to handover 4ordinary bulbs (60 Watts) orCFL (20 Watt) or higherrating to the distributionauthority. He further informed thatCIARI and AH&VS have set up small units of Teresa goat & Nicobari Pig for conservationand propagation purpose. He informed that good qualities found in Teressa goat andNicoabri pig will be also exploited for improving the quality of native breeds as well asmainland breeds while cross breeding will also be made to gauge the quality. This, he said,will enable Islanders get the breeds from the farm at premium price. Dr. Jai Sunder, Principal Scientist, ASD through a power point presentation elaboratedon the characteristics of Teressa goat, which he said is mainly found in Teresa Island,Nancowrie Tehsil, Nicobar District. Teressa goats are generally tall, sturdy, brownish ordark tan or black or white in colour with white and black patches. They have black hair ondorsal midline up to the tail with black cloured muzzle, eyelids and hoofs. They possessa peculiar white patch/line starting from inner canthus of both eyes or from eye browsextending upto the nostrils or mouth. Their height ranges from 24 to 27 inches and weighsabout 60 -65 kg in four years. They feed on coconut leaves, leaves of bread fruit etc. Theirapproximate population stands at 7721.They are indigenous goat breed maintained byNicoabari tribal farmers. An average flock of 6 nos. of Teressa goats is maintained byindividual tribal family of Nicobar group of Islands. The Department of AH&VS andCIARI, Port Blair maintains and propagate the pure germplasm of Teresa goat. Explaining about the indigenous Nicobari Pigs, Dr. M.S.Kundu, Principal Scientist,ASD, ICAR-CIARI said the Nicobari pigs are a family asset of the nicobari tribe and arereared since time immemorial. The Nicobari pigs are highly suitable for free range systemunder coconut feeding. They are sturdy and short with long body and red-brown, blackishbrown and fawn skin colour. They have marked bristle crest on the back of the pigextending from mid head/shoulder to base of the tail. They have good fostering abilitywith less pre weaning mortality. The adult castrated male and female weighs about 100 to150 kg. They thrive under plantation based low input production system of the Nicobaritribes. They are reared mostly for meat while their thick hair can also be used for makingbrushes. Their sexual maturity comes at 5 months unlike other pigs. In his speech, Dr. A. Kundu, Head Animal Science Division said of the 160 breedsregistered by ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, two are from the A&NIslands. He said the aim of registration of these breeds is to help in inventorization,conservation and sustainable utilization of animal genetic resources of the country addingthat efforts will be made to register more number of indigenous breeds available in A&NIslands.

However depending upon the requirements the A&N SSC can transfer the coaches within the period of engagement to any other place of posting within A&N Islands. 15. The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman reviewed the pendency of demarcation cases and ordered to setup a Help-Desk to dispose off all such pending cases through a special campaign. It is observed that the revenue cases pertaining to demarcation of land have been lying pending with Tehsil Office owing to the following reasons. Multiple applications for demarcation of the same piece of land. 1. Non-payment of requisite demarcation fee. 2. Inadequate supporting documents and incomplete particulars. 3. Applicant could not be located. It is proposed to dispose off such pending demarcation cases from second week of September, 2016. Accordingly a Help-Desk has been setup in the Tehsil Office Ferrargunj with Contact No. 03192-266301; Shri.Kunju Mohammed (HGC) shall be In-charge of the Help-Desk who can be contacted over Mobile No. 9434296268 during working hours for guidance. Interested persons are hereby called upon to contact the Revenue Inspector, Area Patwari or the Area Revenue Surveyors concerned to ascertain the status of their applications.
