Ubicada en el extremo oriental dela Polinesia, en el ocano PacficoSur, a 27 9 de latitud sur y 109 27de longitud oeste, a 3.700 km de lacosta de Chile continental. Una delas tierras insulares habitadas msaisladas del mundo.

Su forma es triangular y abarca unasuperficie de 16.628 has, con unadistancia entre cada uno de susvrtices de 16, 17 y 24 km,respectivamente. El ancho mximode la isla es de 12 km.

LOCATION

Easter Island is located in the orientalend of the Polynesia, in the SouthPacific Ocean, at 27 9 ' south latitudeand 109 27 ' west longitude, at 3.700km from the coast of continentalChile. One of the populated islandmost isolated of the world.

Easter Island is triangular and itmeasures 23 km by 11 km totaling171 square km., being the maximumwidth of the Island 12 km.

En el sector norte estn las dosnicas playas, Anakena y Ovahe. Enel sector suroeste se encuentran tresislotes riolticos de pequeasdimensiones, denominados MotuNui, Motu Iti, Motu Kao Kao.

GEOGRAPHY

It is a volcanic island of oceanic type,of recent age, at 3.000 m on the seabed and its trapezoidal base is 50times superior to the surface of theisland. The Island is part of anextensive volcanic submarine chainthat spreads from East to West and towhich also belong the islands Salasy Gmez, San Flix and San Ambrosio.

This complex ceremonialplace has three ahu or ceremonialplatforms, besides rooms anddomestic structures towards theinterior. Facing the platforms, fromleft side to right, the ahu of five Moai(monolithic statues) receives thename of Vai Uri, the next one AhuTahai, and the third one, with eyesand hat, Ahu Ko te Riku. Siguiendo por la costa llega al sectorde Oho Vehi, donde se recuerda elHundimiento del Barco Italiano,TUKI 8. El accidente se produce porun fuerte oleaje en el momento dezarpe que lo hace encallar en unarrecife frente a Papa Haoa. En esemismo punto se encontraron piedrasCanto Rodados, poro o kikiri, quevenan como lastre en el barco y quefueron llevadas para la restauracindel Ahu Akivi (siete Moai), dondeactualmente se encuentran.

DESCRIPTION OF THE SECTION

The section begins in Mataveri'ssector, where Ana Kai Tangata islocated, narrowly related to Orongo'sCeremonial Village. By July, thegroups that were taking part in thecompetition of the Tangata-Manu(Man-bird), kept together in a harevaka of large dimensions until theymoved in procession, from thevolcano up to Orongo's ceremonialvillage, where the competition tookplace.

This section was called "Te Ara o TeAo or "The Way of the Control ", inallusion to the ritual object that wassymbol of power or authority of thechiefs. The winner of the competitionof the Tangata-Manu came downwith the Ao (command baton) in hishand denoting his new status.

The TUKI 18 corresponds to theStation of Geological Observation,it offers a panoramic view of HangaRoa, that includes the way crossedfrom Ana Kai Tangata to this point.Up to 324 msnm rises the Rano Kauvolcano, only his north hillsidesremain, while his south side hascollapsed for the strong erosionproduced by the sea. On the otherhand, thanks to it, there have beenformed cliffs who give an uniqueaspect to the landscape. Its age iscalculated in 2,5 million years. Themore recent activity of the volcanowas 180 thousand years ago.

Rano Kau is one of three volcaniccenters that gave origin to the island,together with Maunga Terevaka, inthe extreme northwest, and Poike, inthe east end. Though these volcanoesrise some few hundred meters up thelevel of the sea, the island gets up near3 thousand meters from the oceanicbottom.
