The Dixons Academies Trust chose the former

Bradford College site to be the location for their

4th Free School, the Dixons McMillan Academy.

It was a building very much in need of conversion in

order to provide a modern, fit-for-purpose learning

environment for 11-18 year olds. In addition to the

conversion a double-height, multi-use entrance

hall was added to the existing structure and a

freestanding, new build sports hall was added to

the site.

TDS were asked to design the additional steelwork

required to strengthen the existing building

throughout the extensive renovation and remodel.

We were also commissioned to provide a new access/

escape staircase for the double-height entrance area

as well as plant access stairs to the roof.

STRUCTURAL STEELWORK

S01. All dimensions in millimetres U.N.O

S02. It is the responsibility of the steelwork fabricator to obtain any necessarysite dimensions required and to prepare connection design calculations forsubmission to the local authority for Building Regulation Approval.

S03. All steelwork to be grade S355

S04. Steelwork to be in accordance with BS 5950-1:2000, Table 4 and 5.

S05. Steelwork to be shot blasted to Sa2.5 and painted with a shop applied 75microns dry film thickness of quick drying zinc phosphate and epoxy primer.

S06. Steelwork built into cavities to be given additional 2no site coats ofbituminous paint.

S07. Steelwork connections and baseplates to be designed by the fabricator.

S08. After erection on site all damaged areas to be manually cleaned back to asound surface and repainted with a primer and other coats as noted above or anequivalent approved by the Engineer. In the case of galvanising the steel is to bepainted with an appropriate number of coats of zinc rich paint to give theequivalent specified thickness.

S09. Concrete encased steelwork to be left untreated.

S10. See steelwork fabricators drawings for details and positions of holdingdown bolts.

S11. All structural steelwork to be in accordance with the National StructuralSteelwork Specification for Building Construction 5th edition.

S12. Fabricator to provide GA's / detail drawings to Engineer prior to fabrication

We received, from our contractor client, all necessary

site surveys of the demolition works and designs for

the steelwork. From this, using Tekla Structures, we

produced a comprehensive set of steelwork details

for approval. After the sign-off, we issued the designs

to the fabricator complete with all information

to ensure they could be correctly and efficiently

assembled on site.
