1.0 Executive Summary

Historically, IT managers faced the dilemma of either buying stand-alone tools to help with

specific tasks (such as PC Anywhere to help with remote control of PCs) or complicated

server-based solutions that were difficult to implement and too complex for a non-specialist

manager to use. New trends in desktop management have emerged that include the following

characteristics:

• Simple and easy-to-use interfaces

• Rapid deployment due to minimal training and ease of installation for a predictable ROI

• No requirement for server log-on

• Able to make use of existing equipment

• Integrated features and capabilities

• Minimal bandwidth impact, helping to ease network demand

The trend is now towards desktop management solutions that provide rapid, easily

quantifiable ROIs. These solutions install quickly (usually in a matter of minutes or hours) and

begin to deliver benefits immediately with minimal training required. The best cases of proven,

high ROI in the area of desktop management are generated from solutions that offer a

comprehensive set of features and functions in a single, easy-to-use suite.

TCO! Stream from Medialand (www.medialand.net ) is an example of the new trend in

desktop management solutions. TCO! Stream is a good example of the improvements that are

taking place in key areas such as ease of use, desktop-centric capabilities, the right balance of

The purpose of this proposal is to provide Customer with details of the proposal for

TCO! Stream software. In order to fulfill Customer needs, this proposal highlights the

In order to achieve overall higher productivity in (Customer), this proposed solution

(TCO) through a complete and reliable TCO! Stream software.

3.0 Why Desktop Management System

A leading telecommunications service provider in Asia, with thousands of PCs

throughout their operation, saved millions of dollars a year by implementing a solution to help

them better manage TCO. A couple of years ago they decided that they badly needed a solution

to reduce the management cost of all these desktops.

In particular, this telecommunications company wanted to seek solutions to the

following pressing issues:

• When a problem is reported – when and how do you solve the problem for both

domestic and international branches?

• How to best deploy new applications?

• How many desktops do we have and what software are they running?

• How can we control the use of unauthorized software and prevent its installation in the

future?

Desktop management software (TCO!Stream) was employed across all group companies

and desktops. The modules utilized to solve these problems were; remote control, software

management (installation, distribution and version control) and asset management. The remote

control application was used for remote diagnostics. The asset management module allowed for

comprehensive inventory management across the organization, which facilitated for PC asset

consolidation, management and the reporting and prevention of illegal software being used by

employees. With the software management module all new software and applications could be

automatically distributed and installed from a central location.

5.0 Desktop Management System Solution

TCO! Stream software is designed to address DMS requirement; helping Customer to capture and analyze ICT asset and PC inventory information, keep track user software and internet activities and usage, provide remote control support, automatic software distribution and Windows critical patches update to HQ and branches desktop user. Hence, Customer Head of IT department can analyze the statistic on hardware and software information easily. The proposed modules under TCO!Stream software included:

Hardware Inventory – Keep track all PC/Server hardware information, like serial number, OS, user information, memory, hard disk etc

Software Inventory – Detect illegal software activities within your organization

5.1 Hardware InventoryThe hardware information is gathered dynamically at a frequency to suite your

environment. In addition, in order to provide a full analysis of all hardware inventories.

TCO! Stream provides the ability to store data on obsolete or unused equipment as well

as providing alerts when PC specifications change, for example the amount of RAM

installed reduces.

5.3 Network Inventory

TCO! Stream is systematic management of network equipment located between the

server and client. It keeps track the Current status of TCO! Stream clients, administrator

can view the user information based on IP segment / Workgroup

5.4 Remote Control

TCO! Stream provides best of breed PC remote control for the corporate enterprise. With

an install base of over 4,000,000 clients, TCO! Stream remote control is a proven solution

for Helpdesk and Remote Support. The features of remote control module are as follow:

5.5 Internet Metering

TCO! Stream delivers powerful yet simple to implement internet metering. The key

functionality of this tool allows a manager to monitor which sites are visited, by which

user and for how long. Once identified, the IT manager can create lists of unauthorized

sites that can then be restricted from general user access, this can be as a blanket policy,

or for certain user groups, or for selected hours of the day.

5.6 Software / Application Metering

certain reporting requirements, but for a fuller picture and to allow effective license

control, the IT manager also needs up to date information on when applications are

5.8 Policy Control

TCO! Stream provides the solution of policy control for the organization that does not run

Domain Controller or Active Directory. Without the present of Active Directory, it will be

almost impossible to manage all the user policy. TCO! Stream provides the solution to control

the policy in term of:

5.9 Patch Management

TCO! Stream provides an effective, automated way to identify security vulnerabilities,

and then collects and deploys security patches to client PCs across the organization.

Other features like:

§ Automatically downloads critical updates and service packs for Windows

§ Helps protect an organization's entire system from such security vulnerabilities

§ Helps in the analysis, collection, and distribution of patches and updates for both

Windows operating system and general application software.

§ Supports a wide variety of Windows OS, hardware and software vendors’

patches, as well as specific user-defined applications’ patches, managing those

patches centrally.

5.9.1 Patch Management Concept

TCO! Stream provides an effective, automated way to identify security

vulnerabilities and deploys security patches to client PCs across the organization. Figure

5.9.2 show how patch management server are setup and how it’s helps IT administrator

during patch deployment.

Hotpatch Server (Hosted by Medialand – http://hotpatch.medialand.net :8080)

was use as the main patch server for TCO!Stream Top Server within an organization.

Once the TCO!Stream Top Server is setuped, it need to connect to Hotpatch Server

through port 80 (HTTP Protocol) to download the latest Windows Update available.

Administrators have option to select which version of Windows (Windows 2000,

Windows XP, Windows 2003 & Windows 2003 Data Center) and which category of

patch (Service Packs, Updates, Critical Updates, Features Packs, Security Updates and

Update Rollups) to be download to TCO!Stream Top Server. A Patch Management

administrator will be assign to maintain the patches available from Windows Updates.

Besides, he also responsible to define and manage which Windows patches is suitable to

be deploying within the organization.

A Patch Intermediate server is required if patch management are rolled up to PC

at the branches. The purposes of patch intermediate server are to reduce direct connect

from client back to Top Server in HQ. By doing that, less connection is issued from

branches to HQ and result of lower bandwidth usage is required within the Wide Area

Network. Patch Intermediate server will pull the patches available from TCO!Stream

Top Server base on the policy configured by Administrator at branches.

Finally, client will download and install the patch automatically base on the

patch authorization configured by Administrator.

5.10 Report Designer

Report Designer is an application tool that allows you to interface with the company-

wide database to easily create and view data on screen or print them out in various

output formats. Report Designer supports Windows standard user interface and

WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) so you can create report templates as

easily as using a word processor.

5.11 AssetID Tracking System

AssetID Tracking system is an application tool that allows users to key in asset

information. Information can also be obtained using the import tool that is connected to

TCO database. With this tool, users would be able to:

§ Create a complete, accurate and updated database.

§ Ease in identifying and monitoring.

§ Identify the condition of asset.

§ Enable easy maintenance, discarding and change of assets.

5.11 Tatacara Pengurusan Aset (TPA)

Tatacara Pengurusan Aset is an application tool that allows users to key in asset

information. The information is based on Tatacara Pengurusan Aset Alih Kerajaan

(TPA). The forms format used are KEW.PA-2, KEW.PA-3, KEW.PA-4, KEW.PA-5,

KEW.PA-6 and KEW.PA-8. Information can also be obtained using the import tool that

is connected to TCO database. With this tool, users would be able to:

§ Create a complete, accurate and updated database.

§ Ease in identifying and monitoring.

§ Identify the condition of asset.

§ Enable easy maintenance, discarding and change of assets.

5.12 Helpdesk System

TCO!Stream features a powerful yet easy to use module for the corporate Helpdesk,

available on its own with just the TCO inventory module or as part of our overall

management suite. TCO! Helpdesk is a fully Web Based solution providing detailed

recording and tracking of user's Help requests as well as a number of unique features

enhancements

§ Prioritized Help Requests and easy operator allocation.

§ Profiled Operator access and customized functionality

§ Detailed reporting and quick report wizards

§ Real Time Corporate Status reports - total calls in, status of calls, Average

resolution time and more

HelpBox system operates under the basis of the Local Network and is divided into the user group,

Admin group, and Super Admin group. The online problem resolution process works according to

the following procedures:

1) Outbreak of a Problem: A problem is found in the user’s PC.

2) Submit a Problem via Web: The user submits the details about the problem.

3) Problem Classification/Allocation: The submitted problem report is classified

and allocated to the appropriate Admin group (based on problem location &

type).

4) Problem Transfer to each departmental Admin: Problems that have been

classified are transferred to each departmental Admin accordingly.

5) Remote Control Problem Resolution Service: Problems are handled using

the remote control tool.

6) Send Problem Resolution Result: The resolution details recorded in solving

the problems are sent to the HelpBox server.

7) Send Happy Call: Once the problem has been completely taken care of, the

satisfaction evaluation request about the resolution result is sent to the user

from the HelpBox server.

7.0 Requirement Study

7.1 TCO!Stream Server Requirement

• Intel Quad Core Pentium Xeon processor (32bits)• 2GB DD2 RAM • DVD-RW ROM drive and Floppy Drive• 100Mbps or Gigabit network connection• 160 GB HDD (C Drive for OS, D Drive for Data) (RAID 5)• Windows 2003 Server (32bits) standard edition + 5 clients • Microsoft SQL 2005 Server standard (32bits) edition + 5 clients • One (1) Static IP Address and define proper Computer Name

a. IP Address given must be able connect to Internet directly.

b. Open the following ports on Network Firewall

i. Web Server – 80(TCP), 8888(TCP)

ii. TCO!Stream Server – 3511(TCP), 3526(TCP), 3510(TCP),

3523(TCP), 3500(TCP), 3501(TCP), 3521(TCP),

3522(TCP),3524(TCP), 3525(TCP), 5900(TCP), 3527(TCP),

5405(UDP), 1505(TCP), 445(TCP), 137(TCP), 139(TCP),148(TCP)

iii. SQL Server – 1433(TCP)

iv. ICMP Ping have to enable in order for the PC and Server to

communicate

7.2 TCO!Stream Console Requirement

a. Any PC which required to install the TCO!Stream Console must able to communicate with TCO!Stream Top Server.

b. PC must login with Administrator Privilege.

c. Internet Explorer must be version 5.5 and above.

d. Firewall for the PC must be Off during console installation

7.3 Client’s PC Requirement

a. Every PC which need to install with TCO!Stream agent must be able to communicate with the TCO!Stream Top Server

b. Client must using OS Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP, 2000 server, 2003

server, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 2008 Server

c. Client’s PC Windows Firewall Must be enable File and Printer during the agent installation

d. Provide a STADARDIZE Local / Domain Administrator Password for the PC which going to install with TCO!Stream Client

e. Client PC must be VIRUS Free and having administrator privilege

f. Client PC must install with THIRD PARTY FIREWALL must allow port:

3511(TCP), 3526(TCP), 3510(TCP), 3523(TCP), 3500(TCP), 3501(TCP),

3521(TCP), 3522(TCP), 3524(TCP), 3525(TCP), 5900(TCP), 3527(TCP),

5405(UDP), 1505(TCP), 445(TCP), 137(TCP), 139(TCP), 148(TCP)

g. File and Printer Sharing (445(TCP), 137(TCP), 139(TCP), 148(TCP))

are required during client installation if REMOTE PUSH IN method is apply.
