Unit 8: The Mole and Stoichiometry

TB Ch 6, 9.1, 9.2

Aim: What is a mole and how do we find the mass in 1 mole of a substance?

What is a mole anyway?

Avogadro's Hypothesis

1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 particles (atoms or molecules)

What is a mole in Chemistry?

602,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

Why do we use moles?• In Chemistry we can use the mole to count the EXACT particles of a substance BECAUSE...

H

O

H1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 particles (molecules or atoms)

1 mole= 22.4 liters of any gas at STP

1 mole= the gramformula mass (GFM) for ANY substance.

Gramformula mass (GFM): the mass of the formula of a substance measured in grams.A.K.A. molar mass, molecular mass, or formula mass.

The GFM equals the mass in grams of 1 mole of any substance.

Calculating Gram Formula MassGFM is calculated by adding the masses of ALL of the atoms in a chemical formula.Round masses from the periodic table to the nearest tenth.

What is the mass of 1 mole of H2O?

3. What is the gram formula mass of sodium, Na?

2. What is the mass of 1 mole of FeSO3?

Calculating Gram Formula Mass

Formula # of atoms of each element

Multiply each number of atoms by its atomic mass

Add up the numbers to get the gram formula mass
