� History

The PGA Winter Championships began in 1954, at theformer PGA National Golf Club in Dunedin, Fla., to provideadditional playing opportunities for PGA Professionals. Thatfirst year’s schedule featured the Stroke Play Championshipand Quarter Century Championship. The Senior-JuniorChampionship was added in 1959, and the Match PlayChampionship in 1964. With the founding of the Senior PGA(now Champions Tour), the Senior PGA Championship wasseparated from the PGA Winter Championships and a newsenior age division competition was developed for PGAmembers. In 1985, this event was named the Senior Stroke PlayChampionship. In February 2000, the Women’s Stroke PlayChampionship became the sixth leg of the popular program.

Eligibility All PGA of America members, except those in the A-3 (Tour Player) classification, are eligible to compete in theTaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Winter Championships under thefollowing guidelines:� The Quarter Century Championship is for those who have

been members of The PGA of America for at least 25 years.This is a 36-hole tournament.

� The Senior Stroke Play Championship (54 holes) is forPGA Professionals who are at least 50 years of age.

� In the Senior-Junior Championship, two-man teams areformed by players selecting their own partners. The seniormember must be at least 50 years of age, and the juniormember 49 years or younger. This is a 72-hole better-balltournament.

� The Stroke Play Championship is a 72-hole tournament.� The Match Play Championship is limited to 288 players,

who qualify for match play through a stroke-play event for63 spots. The defending champion is exempt fromqualifying, and receives the No. 1 seed.

� The Women’s Stroke Play Championship is a 54-holetournament.The PGA Winter Championships were played at PGA

National Golf Club in Dunedin through 1962; Port St. Lucie(Fla.) Country Club in 1963; PGA National Golf Club (nowBallenIsles Country Club), Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., from1964-1973; and at Port St. Lucie Country Club again in 1974.The program was contested from 1975-1981 at Walt DisneyWorld, Lake Buena Vista, Fla., and held in conjunction withthe PGA Merchandise Show during this period. The programwas conducted from 1982-1999 at the “new” PGA National GolfClub in Palm Beach Gardens. PGA Golf Club in Port St. Luciebecame the new tournament headquarters in January 2000.

2010 The TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Winter Championships are supported by Premier Golf. Six national Champi-onships are conducted at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
