What is Taigoo?

Taigoo is an initiative designed to promote the ownership of taxi cabs among poor andmarginalized drivers in Africa starting with Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).

We empower drivers with vehicles under a social leasing system that get repaid between 1

to 3 years. The full and timely repayment leads to ownership of the vehicle being handed

over to the driver.

What's going on?

In Cote d’Ivoire, 25.000 taxis are used as inter -city or communal taxis in Abidjan, the capital

city. Taxi owners have to rely on urban unemployed men to become drivers.

The existing sales practice consists of an “exploitative” daily rental fee paid by the driver,

arguably for the activity lifetime, with no scope for ownership for drivers.

Because of their lack of access to formal finance; drivers perpetuate their bread earning

activity under the daily hire basis and remain stuck in a spiral of poverty throughout their lifetime with all its implications. It is all too common to find drivers well in their 40’s with 20

years of service and no self-owned vehicle.

In Africa, hundreds of thousands of taxis are in circulation representing a significant means

of transport and conveyance - yet cab drivers represent a vulnerable and socially

disadvantaged community everywhere.

What We Do

“Every Taxi Driver. His Vehicle Owned” will describe our mission.

We provide an income generating asset – the taxi cab, and an ecosystem of services thus

promoting micro entrepreneurship among urban poor. Cab drivers repay the cost of the taxi

plus a bonus through their daily sales proceeds for a maximum period of 3 years.

Our innovation lie in our unique style of service delivery and operating model that addresses

underlying causes of poverty through asset based entrepreneurship development.

Our Implementation Model

1. Drivers are brought under groups of 3 to 5 drivers. The group acts as

the social collateral of the given vehicles. No collateral is required but

every new driver pays an upfront “I’m committed fee”. Individual driversare then added to groups.

2. Drivers are supported via an ecosystem of services comprising both

business and social services. Business services include a commercial

booking website; facilitating value-added services such as air-

conditioned taxis, auto advertising, parts and repairs. Social services

include medical consultation vouchers and tie-ups to financial

institutions for personal/family needs.

3. One group of drivers or more will form a garage/meeting point in their

neighborhood. Each garage/meeting point serves as the collection

centre for the driver’s daily payment and for the provision of services.

4. We weave a country-wide network of garage/meeting points and

expand the model virally.
