What Should We Do With Jesus? An unlikely coalition

Some of the witnesses refused to believe They reported to the Pharisees – the religious

party – denominations The Pharisees reported to the Sadducees –

the political party – wealthy aristocrats They hated each other but united against a

common enemy – Jesus Much like Herod and Pilate – Luke 23:11-12


Luke 23:11-12 (NASB)11 And Herod with his soldiers, after treating

Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate.

12 Now Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before they had been enemies with each other.

What Should We Do With Jesus? A wrong discussion with evil intent

Great indecision – John 7:51


John 7:51 (NASB)51 “Our Law does not judge a man unless it

first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?”

What Should We Do With Jesus? A wrong discussion with evil intent

Great indecision – John 7:51“What are we accomplishing?”(Christ’s strength/their weakness)

The collaboration shows the depth of their sin and how it had hardened them

Notice the question – to possibly believe on Jesus – is not even considered


What Should We Do With Jesus? An evil conclusion

Caiaphas seems to side with the people’s best interest

Caiaphas dismisses all other viewpoints Then he speaks truth that he does not even

understand – “better one man die …” He wins with the counsel and later with Pilate Eventually he gets what he is trying to avoid


What Should We Do With Jesus? “What are you accomplishing?” – three

choices You can try to avoid Jesus You can oppose Jesus You can follow Jesus


Why Did Jesus Die? A prophesy without knowing

Caiaphas is being used of God – even in his sin Pilate did the same – “King of the Jews” People at the foot of the cross – “He saved

others, Himself He can not even save” Genesis 50:20


Genesis 50:20 (NASB)20 As for you, you meant evil against me,

but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.

Why Did Jesus Die? A prophesy without knowing

Why Did Jesus Die? A vicarious sacrifice

A ruthless murder for political gain? – human A God of love can do this? – human An outdated Hebrew practice? – human An immoral practice? – human A substitution for our sin? – divine A perfect plan! – divine


Why Did Jesus Die? A definite atonement

This statement not only tells us the nature of Jesus’ death but also the power and scope of that death

Jesus’ atonement was personal for specific individuals who have received Him – Isaiah 53:8; Matt. 1:21; Eph. 5:25; 1 Tim. 2:14


Isaiah 53:8 (NASB)8 By oppression and judgment He was taken

away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?

Matthew 1:21 (NASB)21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His

name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Ephesians 5:25 (NASB)25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ

also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

1 Timothy 2:14 (NASB)14 And it was not Adam who was deceived,

but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.

Why Did Jesus Die? A definite atonement

This statement not only tells us the nature of Jesus’ death but also the power and scope of that death

Jesus’ atonement was personal for specific individuals who have received Him – Isaiah 53:8; Matt. 1:21; Eph. 5:25; 1 Tim. 2:14

Jesus died not just for Israel, or the people of His time, but for all types of people in all times!


His Hour Has Not Yet Come! There are three great protagonists in all of

the signs that John records for us in his Gospel

1. The people Generally confused onlookers/spectators Asking about Jesus, but not earnestly seeking There was a doubt to their questioning More concerned about ceremony than Jesus


His Hour Has Not Yet Come!2. The rulers of the Jews

Wanted to eliminate Jesus’ presence from their lives and the land

The raising of Lazarus had intensified their hatred instead of arousing curiosity or belief

This is an example of traditional religion without divine life

These are the steps of Caiaphas


His Hour Has Not Yet Come!3. Jesus

Jesus knows people and all that is transpiring inside of them – John 2:24-25


John 2:24-25 (NASB)24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting

Himself to them, for He knew all men, 25 and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.



Jesus has a sense of God’s timing – John 12:27


John 12:27 (NASB)27 “Now My soul has become troubled; and

what shall I say, ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.



Jesus has a sense of God’s timing – John 12:27

Because of these two things, Jesus shows great courage in what He is about to face


ApplicationWhich of the three protagonists are you?

Are you like the people, saying this is not your fight, waiting and watching only?

Are you like the rulers, hiding behind empty organized religiosity?

Or, are you like Jesus, following Him because you know the Father and are confident in His plan for you and those around you?
