TASTING
o create spaces for cigar smokers – that is the aim of the so-called Habanos Smo-kers‘ Lounges, a lounge concept dreamed up by 5th Avenue Products Trading GmbH, which now boasts a dozen excellent oases for the smoker in Germany. In the late winter of 2012, the restaurant Ber-lin Moscow opened in Berlin right opposite the Russian Embassy near the Brandenburg Gate. Here the owners set up a modern Ha-banos Smokers‘ Lounge on the first floor,
with plenty of glass. Dr. Max Herzog, who runs three wonderful specialist dealerships in Berlin, supplies the lounge with cigars. It may be generously appointed, but faced with a seven-hour long tasting marathon, the ven-tilation system was close to reaching its limits by the end. For this edition, we tested numerous classics as well as some completely new cigars. Many of these are not yet on the market in Europe or the USA. The range of products and blends
appears to be ever expanding, with the ma-nufacturers cultivating new tobaccos and dreaming up new formats – in keeping with the trend in America this includes many large calibre exemplars. However, the quality of the cigars has been impressive all the way through from the first to the last tasting session.Naturally, all the cigars were tasted blind, and once again, our panel members did a great job. I would like to take this opportunity to point out that many of them put themselves to considerable effort and expense in order to take part in the tasting sessions, which are held in towns all over Europe. For this, I would like to offer sincere thanks on behalf of the Cigar Journal.

Die Torpedo zieht sehr gut. Am Gaumen verbreitet sie wunderbare Süße von Honig, Melasse und getrockneten Früchten. Dazu kommen Erd-aromen und zarte Bitterschokolade. Eine komplexe, harmonisch ausba-lancierte Zigarre mit cremiger Rauchfülle, kräftig und ausdrucksstark.
This Torpedo draws very well. On the palate it releases a wonderful sweetness of honey, molasses and dried fruit. Aromas of earth and a delicate bitter chocolate join in. A complex, harmoniously balanced cigar with a creamy abundance of smoke, which is strong and expressive.
Eine pikante, außerordentlich aromatische Zigarre, die vom ersten Zug weg satte Holz- und Erdaromen, zart bittere Schokoladenoten und volle Röstaromen verströmt. Ihre volle Würze kommt in der seidigen Rauchtex-tur besonders gut zum Ausdruck. Sie ist ausgewogen und mittelkräftig.
A piquant, extraordinarily aromatic cigar, which, from the first draw onwards, exudes full woody and earthy aromas, bitter chocolate notes and full roasted aromas. Its full flavor comes to the fore particularly in its silky smoky texture. The cigar is well balanced and medium-bodied.

This attractive dark Toro is excellently constructed. Dominated by spices, aromas of leather and a subtle, chocolatey sweetness, it of-fers a fully aromatic, first-class smoking experience which is rich in variety. A medium-strength, optimally balanced cigar full of surprises.

Zunächst bietet die dunkle Torpedo eine angenehme schokoladige Süße, die später weitgehend verfliegt. Dafür kommen eine wunderbare Würze und cremige Kaffeearomen durch, ebenso Kakao-, Nuss- und Erdaromen. Eine harmonisch perfekt ausbalancierte, kräftige Zigarre.
At first the dark Torpedo offers a pleasant chocolatey sweetness, which later on vanishes for the most part. Replacing it are its wonderful spi-ciness and creamy aromas of coffee emerging with equal aromas of cocoa, nuts and soil. A harmoniously, perfectly balanced strong cigar.

Die exzellent verarbeitete Großzigarre setzt in den ersten Zügen vor allem Holz- und hier speziell Zedernaromen frei. Danach wird sie zunehmend würziger. Insgesamt eine eher milde Zigarre, die gegen Schluss ein bisschen mehr an Kraft gewinnt.
In the first few draws this excellently manufactured large cigar re-leases mainly woody and here, particularly, cedar aromas; afterward it increases in flavor. Overall, a somewhat mild cigar that towards the end gains a bit more in body.
Die grobe Textur und das ölige Deckblatt suggerieren, dass diese Zigarre einen kühnen Geschmack hat. Ähnliches verspricht schon der Name Cojonu, was soviel wie Kraft und Schneid bedeutet. Würzig, stark, aber zugleich subtil, entfaltet diese Toro einen komplexen Charakter.
The rough texture and oily wrapper with no visible veins suggests that the cigar will be bold in flavor. Well so does the name, Cojonu, which suggests force and literally means ‚balls‘. Spicy, strong, but refined, this is a Toro with a lot of character.

Die Churchill zieht leider etwas streng und brennt ungleichmäßig ab. Dennoch bietet sie viel cremigen Rauch mit Leder-, Schoko-lade- und Erd- und Kräuteraromen. Feinwürzig und fruchtig, zart süßlich und nussig – ein schönes Spektrum; mild bis mittelkräftig.
Unfortunately, the Churchill draws a little too tight and burns un-evenly. In spite of that, it offers plenty of creamy smoke with leathery, chocolatey, earthy and herby aromas. Delicately spicy and fruity, mildly sweet and nutty – a pleasant range: mild to medium strength.

Die Robusto mit dem mächtigen Ringmaß ist in ein schwarz-braunes Deckblatt gehüllt, exzellent gerollt und zieht perfekt. Sie besticht mit feinen Würzearomen, am Beginn mit einer Prise Pfeffer, der später verfliegt sowie Nussaromen. Mittelkräftig.
The Robusto, with its impressive ring gauge, is encased in a black-brown wrapper, exquisitely rolled and draws to perfection. It im-presses with its fine spicy aromas, with a pinch of pepper at the start that later disappears, and its nutty aromas. Medium strength.

An immaculately produced, very tightly rolled Lonsdale with a wonderful pigtail. It draws magnificently. Its roast and earth aromas harmonize with the cocoa and coffee notes, which are highlighted by a subtle sweetness and fine spice. An elegant, full-bodied cigar.

Diese Toro ist in ein wunderbares, rötliches Deckblatt gehüllt und besticht mit einer soliden Struktur. Im Rauchverlauf treten immer wie-der Höhepunkte hervor: manchmal ist sie cremig, dann wiederum dominieren Trüffel- oder Säurenoten. Eine köstliche Zigarre mit Rum.
The Toro wears a beautiful red-tinged wrapper and has solid construction. The flavor is full with highlights that pop out through-out the smoke. Sometimes it is creaminess, sometimes truffles, sometimes acidity. A delicious cigar with rum.
Fest gerollt, leicht gerippt, bestens im Zug. Die Toro startet voll-aromatisch, ledrig und erdig. Sie ist äußerst vielschichtig in den Holzessenzen-Aromen, die von einer netten, cremigen Süße und zartem Pfeffer unterlegt sind. Kräftig, aber unglaublich harmonisch.
This Toro is firmly rolled, slightly veined and has a very good draw. It starts out fully aromatic, leathery and earthy. It is extremely complex in its aromas with the essence of wood, which are underlaid with a nice crea-my sweetness and delicate pepper. Strong, but incredibly harmonious.

This medium strength large bore cigar is somewhat musty in the first few draws, but then develops an impressive floral aroma of herbs, spices, mild nut and a fresh lime scent. A complex smoke, harmoniously well balanced.

Well rolled in a dark, oily wrapper, the Corona Gorda draws perfectly. Black coffee, roast and leather aromas along with woody notes and delicately sweet bitter chocolate make this a diverse aroma and taste experience. The medium-strength cigar is a true delight.

The coarse-veined cigar in a sandy wrapper develops a pleasant sweetness and flowery aromas (of cloves, forest floor, moss....). Alongside mild chocolate and cocoa, a slightly salty flavour is discernible. A mild cigar that forms a perfect ash.

Die kleine, grob gerippte Corona ist gut gerollt und zieht perfekt. Im weichen, samtigen Rauch finden sich zarte Kräutergewürze über einer subtilen, Grundsüße, die an Zimt und Schokolade erinnert. Eine milde, sehr ansprechende Zigarre.
This small, roughly ribbed Corona is well rolled and draws perfectly. In the smooth, velvety smoke there are delicate herbal spices above a subtle basic sweetness that is reminiscent of cinnamon and chocolate. A mild, very attractive cigar.
Die Torpedo ist mild bis mittelkräftig, feinwürzig, zart säuerlich und ledrig in ihrer cremigen, voluminösen Rauchfülle und liefert feine Cap-puccino-Noten, dezente Honigsüße sowie elegante Zedernaromen. Mit den floralen Noten ein tolles, vollaromatisches Raucherlebnis.
This Torpedo is mild to medium in strength, finely spicy and leathery with its creamy, voluminous abundance of smoke, providing notes of cappuccino and a subtle sweetness of honey, in addition to aromas of cedar. Together with the floral notes, it makes a fully aromatic smoke.

Die Churchill ist in ein attraktives, öliges Deckblatt gehüllt. Die feine Holzaromatik der Zigarre mit Anklängen von Bitterschokolade, Kakao und Espresso-Noten kommt sehr gut zum Ausdruck. Sie ist mittelkräftig bis kräftig und wunderbar ausbalanciert.
This Churchill is wrapped an attractive oily wrapper. The fine wood aroma of the cigar with hints of bitter chocolate, cocoa and espresso notes come through very well. It is medium- to full-bodied and wonderfully balanced.

Die Corona Gorda liegt Zug für Zug äußerst sanft am Gaumen. Am Beginn ist sie relativ mild, etwas süßlich und lieblich, im Rauch-verlauf entwickelt sie bedeutend mehr Kraft und verwandelt sich in einen durchaus vollmundigen Smoke mit Nussaromen.
Draw for draw, the Corona Gorda is extremely delicate on the palate. In the beginning the cigar is relatively mild, somewhat sweet and mellow. During the smoke the cigar significantly develops more body and turns into quite a full-bodied smoke with nut aromas.
Die dicht gerollte Robusto mit perfektem Zugwiderstand ist sehr kom-plex in der Aromatik. Sie hat etwas Pikantes, setzt heftige Zedernaromen frei und schmeckt zart nussig. Geschmacklich recht intensiv, scheint die mittelkräftige Zigarre ein guter Begleiter für gehaltvolle Getränke.
The thickly rolled Robusto with a perfect draw resistance is very complex in its aromas. It is somewhat spicy and releases heavy cedar aromas, tasting a little nutty. Quite intense in taste, this medium-bodied cigar seems to be a good accompaniment to drinks with substance.

A full bodied, lightly spicy small cigar, which is wonderfully rolled and draws well. After a creamy start with chocolate and dark bread, more spicy notes increasingly come into play. The medium strength cigar increases in strength throughout the smoke.

Das dunkle Deckblatt der Toro ist feingliedrig und ölig. Gleich zu Be-ginn verströmt sie heftiges Kaffeearoma im cremigen Rauch. Erd- und Holzaromen kommen bald hinzu, ebenso wie eine zarte Würze; gegen Ende etwas süßlich und ledrig. Harmonisch balancierte, mittlere Stärke.
The dark wrapper of this Toro is delicate and oily. Right from the start it exudes a strong coffee aroma in the creamy smoke, to which earthy and woody aromas are added, as well as a mild spiciness; rather sweet and leathery towards the end. Harmoniously balanced, medium strength.
Die Belicoso im fein gerippten Deckblatt ist ausgesprochen würzig mit einem leicht herben Einschlag von Erdaromen, Nüssen und Sandelholz. Dazu kommen Töne von Lakritze und die Fruchtigkeit von Pflaumen. Gegen Ende hin immer mehr Zugwiderstand. Eine kräftige Zigarre.
The Belicoso in its finely veined wrapper is decidedly spicy with slightly bitter elements of earthy aromas, nuts and sandalwood. To this are added notes of liquorice and the fruitiness of plums. Towards the end, it develops increasing resistance in the draw. A strong cigar.

Eine Zigarre mit komplexem Geschmack, bei dem Süße und Noten von Bitterschokolade hervortreten. Sie hat einen herrlichen Zug und eine weiße, ein wenig dunkelgrau unterzogene Asche. Aus dem ausgewo-genen Geschmackspektrum stechen Kakaoaromen hervor.
The taste is complex with sweet and bitter chocolate tastes up front. The draw is fantastic. It has a white ash with little dark gray peaking out underneath. Cocoa tastes peak out of the generally balanced bouquet of flavors.
Die Robusto Maduro im sandigen Deckblatt startet eher scharf. Dann wird sie runder und harmonischer. Eine Zigarre mit pikantem Geschmacksspektrum. Etwas uncharakteristisch für ihre Herkunft, spielt die Süße in dieser milden Zigarre nur eine untergeordnete Rolle.
This Robusto begins with a very earthy and slightly harsh greeting. Then it develops into a more rounded cigar in the savory spectrum of tastes. Uncharacteristic of a Brazillian puro, the sweetness plays only a minor role. This is not a typical Brazillian cigar and it shows excellent potential.

Eine Torpedo im fein gerippten Deckblatt, ebenmäßig und fest gerollt; perfekter Zug. Im dichten, öligen, moschusartigen Rauch ist eine Prise Pfeffer erkennbar. Etwas trocken am Gaumen, erst im zweiten Drittel recht cremig mit vollem, ehrlichem Tabakgeschmack. Mittelkräftig.
A Torpedo in a dark brown, finely veined wrapper and firmly rolled with a perfect draw. A pinch of pepper is unmistakeable in the thick, oily, musky smoke. Rather dry on the palate, but it develops to become truly creamy with a full tobacco flavour in the second third. Medium strength.

This little Figurado appears spicy and peppery, especially in the first draws. Its aromas are mostly drawn from the more bitter side. However, it becomes increasingly mild and spicy, even becoming rounded and well balanced towards the end: tastes very young.

This little dark corona is perfectly crafted, and starts off very strong with an appropriate degree of peppery sharpness. Aromas of oak, notes of espresso and nutty tones. In the course of the smoke, it becomes more gentle. A real little powerhouse.
