Task 1 : Multiple exposures

Successful completion of this task will hopefully give you an idea of what to expect from studying As or A level Photography at HAJC6. Furthermore your completed work could count as part of the entry requirements to study Photography at HAJC6.

What are multiple exposures

• Multiple exposures have been used have been used by photographers and artists for years, they are one of the original ways of editing images (pre Photoshop).

• Multiple exposures are a combination of more than one photograph layered into one image.

• Originally they were made by taking two or more images on the same negative, or layering two or more negatives together in a darkroom.

• Now multiple exposures are regularly made using editing softwhere.

Natural Forms

• Your first project is based around the theme Natural Forms

• Using the medium of photography you will be exploring Natural Forms, literally taking thousands of photos, and developing creative ideas and photographic skills.

• Natural forms is a extremely diverse starting point, It’s up to you how you develop your ideas, techniques and eventually your photos.

Getting started • In order to achieve good multiple exposure images you NEED to

consider the formal elements , pattern & texture, shape , tone and colour.

• Start by taking loads of images of interesting patterns and textures then (Using Paint.net or similar) layer your images. Try to join images together that have contrasting patterns, textures and shapes.

• Its important that you consider colour and tone. Your images wont work well if you layer a dark tonal images on top of another dark image, or similarly if you layer two images if the same colour together.

• Start by taking a contact sheets (about 35) worth of images , focus your study on natural forms, pattern and texture. Then using Paint .net (or similar, ive only suggested this as it’s free to download) layer your images together.

• Whilst layering your images make sure you adjust the opacity , brightness and contrast , and hue and saturation (it takes a bit of trial and error).

• Finally examine your photos and explain what you think has worked well and what could be improved. Repeat the editing process with some more of your pictures, making sure to take into account what has worked well. From the photos you have taken you should produce a range of 3 different multiple exposure pictures.

Open your images in paint.net make sure you have different images on different layers

Click Adjustment then you can experiment with brightness and contrast and the Hue/ Saturation

Double click on the individual layers in the layers window then you can adjust the layer opacityUsing Paint.net
