Task 1

Contractual Brief

“A contractual brief is a type of brief or contract where a media company is

employed by the client in order to complete a project within the brief which is

set to specific guidelines which the media company must follow. It will be very

important for the media company to follow these guidelines and do exactly

what the client states within the brief, if they fail to do so this can result in a

breach of contract and the company could face legal actions.”

A contractual brief is a contract which basically gives the employee a project to

work on by the company whilst abiding by a set of rules, it is very important

that the employee must make the project under these certain rules otherwise

it can cause the company serious problems.

Communication – A contractual brief will have strict communication between

the employee and the company because the company will need to make sure

the employee does all the work within the guidelines.

Time Management – The time management within a contractual brief is strict

because within the contract will be set deadlines for the project which the

employee must adhere to unless they risk termination.

Technical Skills – In a contractual brief the technical skills the employee must

have will be the ability to be very quick at getting jobs done yet being very

efficient at the same time.

Career Progression – Working in a contractual brief will give the employee

experience in working to a deadline for a project as well as working with seat

guidelines which can be very useful for the future.

Negotiated Brief

“ This type of brief will be brought up if the co-operative brief given to the two

of more media companies that are competing the project have any issues

between themselves about the brief or anything they would like to clear up

with the client. Through the negotiations the brief can then be changed in

order to suite every party taking part in the production. This could be anything

from changing the appearance of the product to changing the products

content as well as keeping it to the guidelines set in the brief.”

A negotiated brief is when a co-operative brief between 2 companies goes bad

like if they both have different opinions on a certain part of the project. The

companies will then make a negotiated brief in which both companies will

make a deal in which they can change whatever they want to be changed in

the product whilst staying within the rules of the brief.

Communication – A negotiated brief will have a lot of communication between

the two companies as they try to organise and keep up to date with the

changes to the product.

Time Management – The time management of a negotiated brief will have to

be very strict as the companies are essentially changing part of the product

which means more time will be taken out of the time management to do this.

Technical Skills – With a negotiated brief the employee will require the ability

to quickly analyse, understand and act out what needs to be changed In the

product and why.

Career Progression – Working through a negotiated brief will the give the

employee good abilities in working with unexpected changes working with a

product.

Formal Brief

“This this where a media company is given a brief by the client which outlines

the product which they want to be made. This brief is very open and only gives

enough information to be able to produce the product, any issues or

information that the media company would like to go over can be discussed

during the negotiations with the client. Both the client and the company

employed by them will formally agree on the project and the brief but it

cannot always be legally binding.”

A formal brief is when a certain person/organization tells a media company

such as a film or video game company what product they want to be made.

The brief will only overlay the basic information for the product so that the

company can begin producing the product.

Communication – A formal brief will have quite a bit of communication

between the client and the company as they will more than likely have many

conversations about information and issues regarding the product.

Time Management – The time management of a formal brief will be strict as

the company will be told by the client when everything will need to be done

and they will constantly overlook the company’s progress.

Technical Skills – For a formal brief the employee will need to be able to work

to the client’s standards and expectations.

Career Progression – Working through a formal brief will the give the

employee good abilities in looking at company standards and being able to

work to them standards.

Informal Brief

“An informal brief is not documented and is usually of the verbal kind. It is

where the client and the company which they have employed simply discuss

the requirements for the product they will be making and ultimately agrees

upon the project.”

An informal brief is mainly just conversations between the company and the

organization/person in which they discuss what is needed for the project

before they eventually agree on the project

Communication – A lot of communication is used in an informal brief since it

near enough relies entirely upon communication between the company and

the client.

Time Management – There is quite a bit of time management used/planned as

the client and company will discuss how long the project will take to make.

Technical Skills – Not many technical skills will be used in an informal brief

apart from possible discussion about what technical skills will be involved in

making the project

Career Progression – Informal briefs can be very useful for employees in

advancing communication skills.

Commission Brief

“This brief is where a large media company will employ an other independent

media company to create and produce the product for them, and after the

product has been made the larger company may go on to be use the product

for an external client who will pay the independent media company for making

the product and they could even get a cut of the royalties too. The brief is not

negotiated between the company and the client, however is negotiated

between the two media companies.”

A commission brief is where a company, making a product from a client, will

hire a smaller company to make the product for them, in which they will then

send the finished product back to the bigger company, who will then send the

product to their client who will give pay to the smaller company and possibly

also give them a cut of the royalties the product makes.

Communication – The majority of the communication that takes place will be

between the 2 companies as they will talk a lot about the project and what will

need to be done for it.

Time Management – There will be a lot of time management used as the

smaller company will need to make sure that the project is done by a certain

time as well as the larger company, who will need it done by a certain time to

give to the client.

Technical Skills – The technical skills the employee will require will be the

ability to communicate with other companies as this will help in working with

said companies.

Career Progression – Working with commission briefs can be very useful for

employees as successful work may attract the attention of larger companies

which may want to work with said employees.

Tender Brief

“This is where a client will advertise their brief and a production company will

bring together a proposal that they will pitch to the client, there could be

multiple pitches to the client from many different companies, so the client will

then get the chance to choose the proposal that they think best suits their

brief and offer the job to that production company.”

Communication – A lot of communication will be used between the client and

many various companies looking to work with them.

Time Management – A lot of the time management will be spent on looking at

the various offers from other companies as well as choosing and.

Technical Skills – The technical skills the employee will require will be the

ability to analyse various different offers and deciding which choice would be

best for them in the future

Career Progression – A tender brief can do a lot for an employee’s future as

the right path can take them very high up.

Co-operative Brief

“Within this type of brief there are usually two or more companies that are

hired by the client to work to the brief they have written for the specific

project they want to be completed. After both companies have received the

brief they can then proceed to work together to produce the product. If there

is a disagreement or conflict in ideas there can be a negotiated brief in order to

resolve these issues.”

Communication – The communication will mainly be between the two

companies working together to make the project as well as both companies

talking to the client about the project.

Time Management – The time management will largely depend on the co-

operation of the two companies which could be hindered if negotiation briefs

show up.

Technical Skills – The employee’s technical skills will mostly depend on

communication with the other company.

Career Progression – This can help an employee by showing how well they

work with others which can help gain them recognition in the future.

Competition Brief

“This is where a client can put their brief out so it can be accessed by all of the

different production companies that are participating. It can sometimes been

seen as a free competition as each production company will complete the brief

and the client can then judge which company has the best project and as an

award they have it published.”

Communication – The communication of a competition brief will mainly be

between the client and the various companies as the client will try to choose

which offer is best for him.

Time Management – The time management will consist of the client deciding

which offer will be best for him and sending his replies back to the companies

within the time frame.

Technical Skills – The technical skills the employee requires is the ability to

analyse each individual response and decide on which is the best choice for

him.

Career Progression – The career progression for the employee can be very

rewarding if they choose the right choice, because it can possibly earn them a

lot of money and a higher reputation within the company.

What is the timescale to deliver the product(s) to the client?

All eligible entries have to be entered between September 17th and September

steam store to be purchased.

What is the timescale to deliver the product(s) to the client?

Page 16: Task 1

Callum Deighton

If it is to be uploaded to the steam store Valve will then ask the developer to

give them a timeline in which they will have the date in which the full product

will be ready for release.
