POST-EVENT PLANNING MEETING (August 13, 2017)
17
July 27 to August 01, 2017
Overall, this activity served as a valuable platform for introducing Pakistani mangoes to Uzbek people and obtaining basic understanding regarding market potential of mangoes in Uzbekistan. It provided the opportunity to Pakistani growers, exporters and investors to observe Uzbek marketing system, consumer preferences and culture and develop business networks. Various items were promoted during mango festival and other promotional activities e.g. fresh mangoes, fresh mango chunks, pulp concentrate, dried pulp (free from additives), mango leather (jelly), mango juices, mango milk-shake,. Apart from this, other products like guava pulp, citrus juice, pomegranate juice etc were also introduced.
Below are some suggestions to develop the export business for Pakistani mangoes and other fresh commodities in Uzbekistan:
CONCLUSIONS & FUTURE SUGGESTIONS
Sr. No. Name of Company/Stake Holder
Product Details
1 Development of Mango Export Consortium
It was suggested by various members to develop a consortium of mango industry for export to Uzbekistan for a period of three years. The membership of this consortium will be open for all mango growers and exporters. This consortium should send joint export shipments on equal cost sharing and profit/loss basis. The consortium should work on expanding the export volume every year. Moreover, there should be a restriction by the Govt. for individual exports to Uzbekistan initially for three years (e.g. 2018-20); this will help to set a high value and quality standard for Pakistani mangoes in Uzbek markets.
2 Bilateral Trade Agreement between the two governments
For the earliest start of bilateral trade, the governments of both countries should develop and sign understandings and devise appropriate protocols for certification/quarantine and quality parameters and remittance system against different shipments.
3 Involvement of relevant institutions
The organizations like Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company, Ministry of Commerce and Embassies of both countries must be taken on-board.
18
TASHKENT MANGO FESTIVAL
4 Further promotion, networking and identification of trade items
For promotion of bi-lateral trade between the two countries, two-way industry visits and meetings should be planned (e.g. Pakistan exporters to Uzbekistan, Uzbek importers to Pakistan etc). The Uzbek companies can be invited to Annual Mango Festival at Multan. Similarly, Pakistani mango export consortium can participate in annual International Fruit and Vegetable Fair, Tashkent.
Moreover, country wide promotion of Pakistani mangoes in Uzbekistan and building connection with supermarket segment (Makro, Korzinka etc) is very important.
Identification of potential importable items is also indispensable to promote bilateral trade.
5 Exploring other central Asian states
Attempts need to be made in other central Asian states e.g. Russia, Kirghizstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, etc to develop regional trade.
6 R&D Both governments should promote collaborative R&D in agriculture focused areas for mutual benefits of both nations.
A well planned, detailed and comprehensive consumer research in Uzbekistan is required targeting various socio-economic zones, age groups, gender perceptions.
Moreover, R&D is also required to fully understand the marketing and pricing mechanism of Uzbekistan.
7 Cargo Special cargo flights will be required with the development of bilateral trade on possible lowest freight rates. The fast-track custom clearance mechanism needs to be established for perishable commodities like mango. Moreover, road transport pathways option also need to be explored.
8 Exchange Programmes To promote friendship and professional linkages between the two countries, cultural and academic exchange programmes should be organized initially for three years during the consortium period.

Following bottlenecks need to be addressed in future to promote the bilateral trade among the two countries:
Lack of Govt. Support: The support from government is indispensable for opening the trade route through signing mutual trade protocols and starting cargo services.
Financial remittance: The financial remittance has been identified as a potential barrier. Procedures have to be set for ensuring the financial transactions.
Language barrier: Most Uzbek people including many fruit and vegetable traders were not able to understand English language. Russian and Uzbek are the common languages.
