Background Social and economic forces have seen the Tarlungeni community remain marginalised in extreme poverty, living on poor land without services or infrastructure. There are currently little opportunites for young people growing up in the settlement; young children resort to playing amongst the waste. However FAST’s work has brought significant improvements; its ‘Better Homes’ program has successfully assisted the construction of homes and supplied clean drinking water to the community. An innovative project in a marginalised community The project binds the architectural knowledge of University of Sheffield volunteer’s with FAST’s high level of community understanding gained from over 10 years experience in the village. The team are working in close consultation with residents to achieve a highly beneficial outcome from the project for the local community. The project will embrace an inclusive design process and encourage cross community participation. Located in a highly visible area of land, the project will improve the settlement’s appearance, challenging ghettoisation and supporting futher community cohesion. Tarlungeni Open Space Project Timetable The project comprises of three key elements: - Clearance of the rubbish along the riverside and initiate a waste collection with the provision of bins and fencing. - Prevention of further erosion of the riverbank by reinforcing the area with gabions. - Design and construction of community recreational facilities to create an area of positive public space central to the settlement. Phase one will initiate in March 2011. About Tarlungeni Open Space Project is working to design and construct recreational community facilities in Tarlungeni Roma settlement, Brasov County. The project is a partnership between the Architecture graduates from University of Sheffield, UK and Romanian charity FAST (Fundatia pentru Asistenta Sociala si Tineret).
