Target Audience: Nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse educators, long-term care

administrators, and others interested in care of the older adult.

Attendees will define the unique health care needs, issues and concerns of the

geriatric patient aimed at enhancing the health status and comfort level of

elderly patients.

The Geriatric Update is intended to be an overview of topics that nurses will

need in caring for the elderly adult. Subjects addressed will be a good

introduction of topics needed for preparation to take the ANCC Gerontological

Nursing Certification Exam. Nurses who plan to sit for the Gerontological

Nursing Certification Exam should study in more detail.

Objectives:

Correlate the normal aging process to healthcare promotion and needs of

the geriatric population.

Identify acute and chronic physical illnesses often encountered when

providing care to senior adults, including complications such as pain and

UTI in the geriatric patient.

Assess the physical status of the geriatric patient.

Discuss the psychiatric and behavioral issues of the geriatric population

with regards to assessment and treatment of mood disorders or neurocog-

nitive disorders.

Explore medication issues surrounding care of senior adults.

Examine end-of-life care needs and issues of adult seniors living both

independently and in long-tem-care.

Discuss signs, symptoms, and legal mandates surrounding elder neglect
