Effectively supporting people with personal or health challenges to return to and stay at work Taranaki employment support symposium You are welcome to attend one or all of the following free sessions: 10am-12pm: Supporting people with a history of offending into employment Presentation: Reducing re-offending through employment Elizabeth Manchee, national manager employer partnerships, Department of Corrections Elizabeth and her team support Corrections staff, both inside and outside the wire, to provide the best possible services to job seekers. Elizabeth has been in the public sector since 2003 in a variety of management and senior management roles. She has also worked as chief of staff to the Norfolk Island Government and as principal policy adviser to two Australian state ministers. Prior to the public sector, Elizabeth was a police officer in Sydney. Presentation: Sharing experience from a pilot supporting offenders to return to work Tyron Pini, service development manager, Workwise (BA Hons Social Work, DipSW, PGCMS, ACE) Tyron has represented the supported employment sector at a number of national forums, and has presented at conferences in New Zealand and internationally. He has also been published in the Mental Health Review Journal. Nik Andre, team leader, Workwise Nik has led the Workwise Bay of Plenty team since its inception in 2006. In 2011-12 the service was the top performing Workwise team. Nik has worked for Work and Income and Workbridge and is well known and respected for his leadership in the sector. 1pm-3pm: Combining our expertise: effectively integrating employment support Presentation: This practical session draws on experts who will share with you knowledge and information about the field, including approach, experiences and what they are learning about supporting people into employment Helen Lockett, strategic policy advisor, Wise Group (MA, MBA) Helen is an experienced director and researcher working in the mental healthcare sector. Her focus is on how to influence and bring together policy, research and practice to improve outcomes for individuals and families/ whanau. Helen is acknowledged internationally as an expert on employment and mental health. Prior to moving to New Zealand, Helen was director of programmes and performance at the UK’s Centre for Mental Health, a leading international policy centre. This free symposium will explore effective methods of supporting people with mental health or addiction issues, or histories of offending to return to and stay at work. This is an important event for those working in primary or secondary mental health care, with offenders, or providing welfare support.

6pm-7.30pm: The science of mental health and employment, an evidence based alternative to signing sickness certificatesThere is unequivocal evidence on what works to support people with a severe mental illness to find and keep jobs, and this evidence is now applied to support people with mild to moderate mental health conditions under the care of GPs. This session will outline the findings from an evaluation of these programmes and discuss how these services can be made routinely available. Light refreshments available.

Heather Kongs-Taylor, researcher, Te Pou (mental health research and workforce development centre)Heather’s role at Te Pou is to develop evidence based research, products and guides to support the mental

health workforce, with a current focus on employment in mental health. Heather has been bringing together information on the relationships between employment and health and developing resources to demonstrate its relevance to the workforce.

Richard Bell, team leader, WorkwiseRichard has led the Auckland Workwise team for the past six years, developing integrated services within Auckland and Counties Manukau DHB community and inpatient

mental health services. Prior to this he has held senior nursing and management roles in New Zealand and Australian mental health services, focusing on service development, Maori mental health and (early intervention) first presentation psychosis services.

Dr Ingo Lambrecht, clinical psychologistIngo has been a clinical psychologist for over 20 years, specialising in child and adolescence, psychosis, personality issues, trauma and mindfulness. Ingo has worked in a range of services including child and adolescent mental health, rehabilitation and specialist psychotherapy services. He divides his time between Manawanui Oranga Hinengaro (Auckland DHB Maori mental health services) and his private practice. He has presented and published nationally and internationally.
