Teelba Phantom Race Day 2014

Record Crowd At The Flinton RacesThe 2014 Flinton Races recorded another record attendance on Easter Saturday. The races have grown in numbers every year for the last few as the word spreads that the little village of Flinton and a small but dedicated committee puts on a great show. Campers started rolling in from the Thursday prior and were still in attendance as Sunday dawned. A beautiful fine day saw the ladies dress to the nines and Fashions on the Field was hotly contested.

Trainers and jockeys supported Flinton very well again this year with all five races full, racing for over $40,000 in prize money. The hard working volunteers from the St George Lions Club did a fantastic job keeping the punters fed and watered all day and backed up on Sunday morning to provide breakfast for the weary party goers.

The number of campers at the Flinton Races grows every year and they were especially excited this year to find a newly constructed amenities block. Fashions on the Field, the Flinton Footraces and bush poetry kept the crowd entertained all day. As the sun set over the scrub the crowd was treated to an awesome fireworks display. The band and DJ Jonny Mac kicked into gear and the dust on the dance floor really started to swirl.

As dawn broke on Sunday morning the true scale of the 2014 Flinton Races became evident and the weary committee began the clean-up already planning next year’s event. It seems that the Flinton Races has become a “mini Birdsville”.

There were frocks, fascinators and fun to be had by more than 100 attendees at the Teelba Phantom Race Day on Saturday.

The Teelba State School Multi-Purpose Centre was transformed into a spectacular racing carnival scene with race-goers betting hundreds of thousands of “funny money” dollars on eight big screen races. “Questionable Bookies” provided random and varied betting odds and techniques, with James and Edwina Coggan taking out the “Most Successful Bookie” award, ending their day still ahead of their punters.

The Fashions of the Field were hotly contested with best dressed lady going to Theresa Penfold and best dressed gent to Shaun Salter.

Meanwhile, the little ones were kept well entertained by the St George Mobile Kindy who kindly donated their time and resources with a variety of painting activities, play dough and craft as well as a merry-go-round and jumping castle kindly provided by the Maranoa Regional Council.

The auctioning of a number of items kindly donated by very generous sponsors, including a personalised, framed photograph from Scott Bridle Photography selling for over $2000, will help the Teelba P & C to continue to assist the education and development of the students of Teelba State School.

Overall, the day was a huge success with fun and excitement had by all who attended. The Teelba P & C wishes to thank their generous sponsors who make the day possible and the wider community for their support and patronage.

A Note From the Editor

We have a new member of the Western Downs Magazines family: Willow Lacee Wood was born on the 14th of April, a beautiful little girl for Michael and Amelia (who is on maternity leave for another 11 months, not that we are counting) and congratulations to Cole on his promotion to ‘big brother’.

Mother’s Day is on the horizon now too as we head into May, 2014! I hope all the Mum’s out there are spoilt rotten; it truly is the most challenging, yet rewarding job a woman can ever take on. It’s funny though how until you have your own children, you can never really appreciate what we put our own mothers through! I know for a fact I would still be lost without mine; she’s really one of a kind.

Tara Easter Sheep Dog TrialsTara once again held a highly successful trial with probably the largest number of entries for a long time. There were 99 dogs entered in the Open Trial with a total of 268 dogs run over the three days. Trialling started at 6am each morning due to the large entries and Gloria and Joe Tipper travelled from Casino NSW to trial, cook a lovely stew for everyone on Sunday Night and then along with some very talented trialler’s give us some very enjoyable entertainment in the form of a concert.

They have travelled here for the last 5 years to trial and entertain us and everyone has a great time.

This trial is made possible by the continued support of Grant and Fiona who donated the use of their sheep once again. Grant also carted them in for us and transported them out on Monday after the trial.

Thank you to all the people and businesses of Tara who supported us with generous donations once again this year. This is really appreciated and helps to make our trials a huge success every year.

The Encourage trial finished in a tie between Kate Hawe with Kaden’s Bonnie Lass and Rachael Bice and Thornton’s Pirate.

Colin Topp from Brisbane won the Novice Trial with his dog Smiley’s Kel and the Improver went to Damian Bougoure from Roma and his dog Fiesta Shilpa. The Western Downs Championship Open Trial was won after a run off by Errol Brettschneider from NSW. Errol and Jim O’Connell from “Camara” Winton ended in a tye before Errol was the victor.

Dalby Show Sheep Dog TrialsMembers of the Tara Working Sheep Dog Association ran a very successful trial for the Dalby Show Society at their recent show held on Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th of April. The trial continued on Sunday the 13th and there were a huge number of entries this year considering the drought conditions recently.

This trial was made possible by the very generous support from Grant and Fiona Borchardt of “The Deep” Tara who lent their sheep for the trial. Grant continues to support Tara Working Sheep Dog Association every year and is a very community minded person.

He has also donated the use of his sheep for the Tara Trails over the Easter weekend and we cannot thank them enough for their continued support of our Club.

Glenmorgan Snake Gully Cup CampdraftThe ever popular Glenmorgan Snake Gully Cup Campdraft runs once again this year from 16th to 18th May. Well known for its great food and company, this year the Draft offers riders an extra day of competition with the first rider out of the camp at 10am on Friday morning. We retain our infamous Friday night kebabs with the bar open throughout the entire weekend. Bloomin’ Creative Showcase - TaraThe Bloomin’ Creative Showcase Steering Group is delighted to announce the dates for the upcoming Bloomin’ Creative Showcase, 2014.

The Showcase is a one week art exhibition providing exposure for and appreciation of the artists within the Tara region. The exhibition will feature artistic creations by the talented residents of the region and provide a space for them to display and sell their pieces.

The Showcase will be officially launched on Friday, 1st August at Tara Memorial Hall at 6pm. The community is invited to wander through the displays and enjoy the wine and cheese reception. There will be some light entertainment and everyone is also invited to get into the spirit of the exhibition by taking part in our Wearable Art Fashion Parade. There will even be a prize for best dressed!

The exhibition will be open daily from Saturday, 2nd August to Friday, 8th August from 10am

- 4pm. Visitors to the Showcase will have the opportunity to meet some of our working artists and to witness creations in progress during the week long exhibition.

So, come along and view the diverse range of art on offer. You’ll enjoy the experience!

Moonie Is 50 And We Want You To Help Us Celebrate!Do you have a connection with Moonie, either with the oilfields or the district? Fifty years ago, in 1964, the Moonie Oilfields was built to pump the newly discovered oil reserves. Many people built the facilities here, and many more worked and sometimes lived at the Moonie Oilfields. The recently balloted farming blocks were being cleared and the pioneering farming and grazing families of the Moonie district looked forward to a wonderful new district that they hoped would grow and prosper. Moonie State School recently celebrated it’s 50th year as well.

In 1964 a group of locals decided to build a

tennis court, then cricket grounds and the Moonie Sports Club began. It’s still the hub of the district and has hosted all manner of sports including cricket, tennis, netball, an AFL club, a gun club, fitness and ballet groups, as well as a well stocked and run bar, many different groups who meet there, our famous yabbie races, playgroups, school concerts, Arts Council performances, weddings, christenings, 21sts and funerals. Over the years, the volunteer run sports club has expanded and updated it’s facilities and we now boast arguably the best hall and facilities for many kilometres (yes, we are boasting, but it’s

true! We even have mobile phone signal now!!)

Please come and help us celebrate our half century on Saturday 7th June. It’s a very rare opportunity to tour the Santos Moonie Oilfields as it is usually a restricted area for safety and business reasons. Tours begin there at 11am then travel the short distance to the Moonie Sports Club, where the afternoon’s fun will lead on into an evening of food, fireworks and a great live band. Please RSVP for catering so we can feed you all! It will be a great day to remember.

I’ll Give You A Dahlia A Day, Dear!The Moonie Visual Arts Group recently ran a wonderful weekend workshop at the Moonie Sports Club with Bev McClune from Toowoomba teaching the visually distinctive “Dahlia” quilting pattern (pattern and templates by Marti Michell). Diverse colour schemes really showed up the mathematical pattern which looked difficult to achieve, but was almost easy under Bev’s quietly confident tutoring style. We look forward to seeing these completed in the coming months. They are the same pattern and size, but the differences in colours and patterns make them visually quite different.

We know a lot of people are watching their budget and if you can not afford starter or other granular fertiliser then maybe consider a seed treatment of Nutriseed.

Nutriseed is made up of a variety of fine oxides and trace elements to help with plant establishment and root development. Budding Photographers’ CompetitionThe newly formed Myall Park Botanic Garden Photography Club is hosting their first Photography Competition with a culminating event of an exhibition/auction at Myall Park on the 16th May. Local amateur photographers are invited to submit one entry in an open competition with prizes including a set of Myall Park Botanic Garden prints. The Club recently held a Photography Workshop at Meandarra State School with Peter Rickards travelling from Toowoomba to provide the expertise for the day. Some very exciting rainfall occurred during the workshop which fuelled the photographers’ creative juices and the participants focused on capturing water droplets. Some wonderful photos were taken, including the one below by Peter himself of a local child enjoying the simple pleasures of a wet day and some beautiful blooms at Myall Park Botanic Garden taken by Sean Grams. Anna uses a Canon 7D, her first DSLR. Photography is something she has taken up only recently - she wanted a good camera so that she could take better photos of her daughter, family and all that they do. Now the camera is always with her. Anna’s main areas of interest are portrait photography and landscape photography. She loves the traditional look of black and white photography and has been doing quite a bit of that lately, both landscapes and portraits.

Livestock BiosecurityBiosecurity is becoming a significant issue for primary producers in the Western Downs and our nation at large. Karen Huskisson of Wattle Downs Merino and Poll Merino Stud at The Gums is a Director on the Agforce Sheep and Wool Board. In this role, Karen has been trained as a Biosecurity Industry Liaison Officer in not only sheep and wool but all biosecurity issues that have the potential to affect primary producers. Karen has developed a broad knowledge of issues through her roles as the President of the Queensland Merino Stud Sheepbreeders’ Association, a member of the National Wild Dog Action Plan Committee, a delegate on the Australian Association of Stud Merino Breeders, a committee executive of Leading Sheep, a coordinator of the Moonie Weed and Pest Group, a member of Southern Inland Queensland Regional Committee of Agforce and also the Transport Committee. These roles have given Karen a comprehensive knowledge in the issues that arise under the banner of Biosecurity and assist her in understanding all industries of primary producers.

Karen recommends that all properties should have a Biosecurity Property Plan to assist them with their personal management of any risks or hazards that have the potential to harm their livestock or business. Biosecurity hazards do not only appear as animal diseases; they can come in all shapes and forms including:

• Weeds: Vehicle access to properties can pose a threat of transferring weeds; this hazard has become more common, especially with the current active oil and gas exploration where a high risk of Biosecurity issues arise with vehicles entering and exiting properties. Some properties and paddocks have been rendered unusable due to the spread of African lovegrass and other inedible grasses and weeds.

• Feral Animals: These animals can transfer catastrophic diseases to our livestock. For example, wild dogs spread diseases such as parvo, distemper and neosporum caninum which specifically causes early abortion in cattle; feral pigs can spread leptospirosis as well as acting as a carrier for various worms and other minor diseases.

• Fodder: Importing and exporting contaminated feed from properties and factories also poses a risk of transporting poisonous and inedible plants like Patterson’s curse, parthenium weed, mother of millions and stremoneum.

• Straying Stock: Stock that are inadequately contained on their property of origin pose one of the greatest risks and can spread disease at a phenomenal rate while having a detrimental impact on viability of livestock production. Not only does straying stock spread lice and other contaminants; sheep pose a huge risk of contracting and spreading brucellosis which is a sexually transmitted disease causing infertility. This disease is in extreme stages in some areas of Queensland amongst the sheep industry due to the lack of containment of stock. In addition to this, graziers are getting unwanted offspring affecting their breeding program and genetic gains. To prevent this, you should buy your rams from a Brucellosis Accredited enterprise. Medulated fibre in merino flocks also causes a large discount to the producers’ wool as the fibre is from an exotic animal breed which must be declared on selling wool. Any exotic breed owner can be held responsible for lack of stock containment and loss of income to the merino owner.

• Transporting Stock: The importation of stock from interstate can aid in the contraction of ovinejohnes/bovinejohnes disease. It is a national regulation that all stock transported interstate must travel with a National Health Statement and sheep should travel with a Sheep Health Statement supplied by the owner or seller to the buyer. It is recommended that all purchasers of livestock should check the stock entry requirements for their specific state and their role as a purchaser.

With these extra hazards posing risk to your livestock, it is essential to incorporate a Biosecurity Property Plan in your management procedures to ensure the farm’s optimum viability status. Your local Biosecurity Industry Liaison Officer can assist you with accessing information on contamination, disease and creating a Biosecurity Property Plan.

Karen says there are specific chains of action that must be taken should you find health status issues within your livestock. Firstly, you would need to contact your regular vet. If the vet is unable to explain the illness or if the issue is that of a biosecurity nature, your vet must contact the Principal Veterinary Officer who will then inform the Chief Veterinary Officer of Queensland. From here, you can be put in contact with your local Biosecurity Industry Liaison Officer who can assist with facilitation of communication and explanation between the authorities and you as the farmer on a confidential basis.

Queensland Country Women’s Association Recently, members participated in Photography, Public Speaking and Dressmaking Competitions, and the winners of these Competitions now go on to the Southern Region finals to be held at Redcliffe in June.

We also participated in The Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) ‘Women Walk the World’ with a display of ‘Shoes with a Story to Tell’. Members voted with the smallest coins in their purse for the shoes with the winning story. The funds raised from this little Competition will be used to support the work of ACWW in the South Pacific Area.

Branches throughout your area welcome women from all walks of life at their meetings held monthly. Some QCWA activities include:

Supporting families in distress caused by flood, fire and drought through providing vouchers to local stores to purchase household needs. Funds are raised for the Public Rural Crisis Fund (PRCF), by fundraising and tax deductible donations, and ALL funds are used to provide assistance to families suffering from natural disasters. Lobbying various levels of government to improve conditions in communities. Areas of concern include: health, transport, education, the environment, and community and national security.

Education and support of women and children in many areas including cooking, craft, public speaking, and international welfare of women and families.

Competitions including Hand craft, Cookery, Knitting and Crochet, Photography and Public Speaking.

Collecting old spectacles to be recycled to Papua New Guinea, making birthing kits for PNG, collecting used stamps and foreign coins to be sold to fund International projects that benefit women and children, and putting together ‘Kits for Kids’ of educational necessities for schools in PNG and the South Sea Island communities.

Last Friday, we congratulated Mrs Judith Bridge on 25 years of service with the Department of Education at Tara Shire State College. Mrs Bridge is a valued member of our administration team. She started working at Tara Shire State College on 28th March, 1989, when the office was located upstairs in C Block (where the secondary staffroom is now located). When she first started, she had to learn to use an electric typewriter and then, later a computer. She was very reluctant to learn how to use the computer and would have preferred to have kept her electric typewriter but, in true style, she learnt the computer and now uses it proficiently every day.

For those of you who know Mrs Bridge, you will know that she maintains a steady calmness about her regardless of what is going on. She has a wonderful way of dealing with people, she is polite to everyone who enters our office and genuinely cares for our students and staff. It has been my privilege to have worked with Mrs Bridge over the last five years. Sitting on her desk is a small plaque which I gave her because it sums up exactly how I feel about her contribution to our College, “You are exactly who and what and where you are supposed to be and you are lovely.”

Bunyip hunting!

On Friday, 21st March, our classes 1/2G and 2/3W, along with Miss Gossage and her year 3s, went on a Science Excursion to Columboola to explore living things. On the excursion, we got to hunt for yabbies using meat tied to a string. Miss Garrad was so excited to catch two yabbies!

We also went on a hunt for the mysterious Bunyip. On the hunt for the Bunyip, we found lots of things in the Bunyip’s green and red bags. These included magnifying glasses, stethoscopes, feely bags and a cookie and a drink! These items helped us to understand how the Bunyip’s five senses worked. They have great eye sight, great hearing and love their food. But unfortunately, we didn’t see the Bunyip because they only come out at night!!

We had a wonderful time with great behaviour and we look forward to another excursion in the future.

A Million Paws Opens Doors for Dogs in NeedThe RSPCA Queensland’s largest fundraising event of the year Million Paws Walk is back and bigger than ever with over 17,000 people estimated to walk at 26 different locations state wide, on Sunday 18th May 2014.

This year RSPCA Qld is hoping to raise $250,000 for dogs in need. Nearly 45,000 animals pass through RSPCA Qld Animal Care Centres every year and over 18,000 are dogs that have been surrendered, abandoned or seized by Inspectors. These dogs are not as fortunate as your much loved family pet. They often need to be desexed and vaccinated before they have the chance to find a new home. The money raised through The Million Paws Walk enables these dogs to receive daily care, veterinary treatment and funds rehoming programs. The cost to our community for these animals in need is in the millions.

This year the RSPCA Queensland is encouraging Million Paws Walk participants to try and raise $150 each. “Our annual operating costs are $39 million in Queensland and we receive less than one percent of that figure in Government funding. So every cent raised helps,” said RSPCA Qld spokesperson Michael Beatty.

Recipe

Ingredients

500g chicken breast fillets, thinly sliced

1 tbs sesame oil

2 tbs peanut oil

3 garlic cloves, crushed

1 tbs grated ginger

2 long red chillies, seeds removed, finely shredded

4 spring onions, white part finely chopped, green part shredded

1 bunch Chinese broccoli (gai lan), stems and leaves separated

100g whole baby corn, halved lengthways

500g fresh thick rice noodles

2 tbs dark soy sauce

2 tbs oyster sauce

1 tbs fish sauce

2 tsp brown sugar

Method

Step 1 Combine the chicken and sesame oil and season. Preheat a wok or large frypan over high heat.

Step 2 Add 1 tbs peanut oil to the wok and stir-fry the chicken for 4 minutes or until golden. Remove chicken and set aside. Add the remaining 1 tbs peanut oil to the wok and stir-fry the garlic, ginger, chilli and chopped spring onion for 30 seconds or until fragrant. Return the chicken to the wok with the broccoli stems and corn, then stir-fry for a further 2 minutes. Add the noodles and toss to combine with the chicken and vegetables.

Step 3 Add the soy and oyster sauces, sugar, 1/4 cup (60ml) water and broccoli leaves, then stir-fry for a further 1 minute or until leaves are wilted and the chicken is coated in the sauce. Divide among 4 bowls and serve topped with shredded spring onion and extra chilli.

Not everyone enjoys tax time as much as the accountants at BMO, so Partner, Adrian Rasmussen, has put together these top three tips to help you survive the final quarter of 2013-14 and to avoid any nasty surprises after 30 June.

See your accountant. It might sound obvious, but it still surprises us that some business owners don’t see their accountant before the end of June. You should be seeing your accountant in May to review your predicted tax position. When 1 July hits, it is too late. Over the years, we have saved clients thousands and thousands of dollars with legitimate strategies to minimise tax liability.

Get Super advice. With the pension age set to rise to 67 in 2023 (and talk of it going up to 70), there’s no guarantee that we’ll have pension payments in the future, and life expectancy continuing to rise, we need to be investing for our futures. Superannuation has had a bad rap over the years, but remember it’s not Superannuation

itself that is bad, it’s the failed investments that have been made inside Superannuation that have caused the trouble. Superannuation is a really effective structure and you can use it for high or low risk investments. That said, tax time is the perfect time to talk to your financial planner and accountant about your super as it can be an essential part of your tax planning.

Get organised. If you haven’t kept all your records up to date during the year, now is the time to get your bookkeeping program (like QuickBooks) ship-shape. If you find entering data too time consuming and mistyped figures drive you crazy, talk to your accountant about streamlining with BankLink. This system securely takes the information straight from your bank statement, so there’s no need to enter all the data. You can also set up the program to memorise transactions so regular payments are coded automatically for you.

While tax time can be stressful, communicating with your accountant regularly is an important way to keep calm and enjoy closing of another financial year.

My Midwives Rural Outreach Darling DownsMy Midwives is a Midwifery Group Practice based in Toowoomba. We opened in December of 2010 as the first practice of its kind in Australia. We provide antenatal care and postnatal care in the community and labour and birth care at Toowoomba Hospital where we have admitting rights. All our midwives are able to order pathology and diagnostics and many are able to prescribe. We provide two main services – continuity of midwifery care where a woman sees the same midwife throughout the continuum from early pregnancy to six weeks after birth with the midwife on call for labour and birth care and a bulk billed services where a

team of midwives provides the care.

The My Midwives Rural Outreach – Darling Downs project has been funded by Medicare Local. The program will provide antenatal and postnatal care in three areas – Millmerran, Inglewood and Chinchilla in conjunction with medical care of the woman’s choice if required or desired

Green Thumb ExpressCall for potted plants for drought gardens - any type, anywhere in Queensland (except fire ant restricted areas, sorry).

In order to help people whose gardens have been hurt by the drought, the Green Thumb express is asking you to pot up something from your garden or purchase some drought tolerant plants from your local nursery.

Ladies in our area were discussing how many people had either run out of water, had to change to harsh bore water as well as cope with record temperatures this summer in the middle of this devastating drought. I live near Windorah in western Qld and we have been drought declared since June 2013.

We came up with the idea that that if people were willing to pot plants and donate cuttings/plants then it would go a long way to helping those who have lost all or part of their garden when the drought finally breaks. There is currently a run scheduled for early May, so any donations of plants will get to the people who have registered their gardens in need of revival after the drought – Mitchell, Mungallala, Charleville, Tambo, Quilpie and Windorah. That is just on this run. There will also be a run from Warwick/Goondiwindi west to St. George & Cunnamulla.

We will be looking to do other runs up until end of September 2014, which will be the end of the collection and distribution of plants.

We are encouraging each community to make the most of the idea and get their own communities & garden groups on board.

Colds And FluCommon colds are respiratory tract infections caused by viruses.

Medicines can relieve symptoms, but cannot cure the common

cold. A vaccine and some antiviral medicines can protect against influenza.

Spotlight on Castor OilLast month, I discussed the dangers of synthetic preservatives in our food and personal care products and the links they have with illnesses and diseases. I also talked about the benefits of using certified organic products and how small changes can really prolong your life and benefit your health. This month, we put the spotlight on castor oil, one of the best kept secrets in the world of natural cosmetics and beauty products. A key ingredient in a number of personal care products, castor oil is a deep skin healer and contains strong therapeutic qualities. Sometimes used to assist in pregnancy, castor oil has a bit of a sour reputation as a result of its taste and mouth feel, which is said to be like drinking a thick oil, or even vaseline.

Thankfully there are other options if you don’t want to swallow it, but you will have to put it on your skin. Castor oil is one of the key ingredients in some lip glosses because of its fantastic healing and rejuvenating properties.

Here are five very good reasons why it pays to apply it to your skin:

1. Because it has a low molecular weight, castor oil is easily absorbed into the skin, helping to nourish and moisturise. It is particularly effective when it comes to the prevention and treatment of wrinkles.

2. Castor oil has been used for thousands of years as a face cream to help reduce dark under-eye circles.

3. It is rich in ricinoleic acid, a powerful antimicrobial agent which can help fight skin infections, as well as aid in the healing of minor cuts and scratches.

4. Ricinoleic acid also possesses pain relieving properties. This makes castor oil ideal for the treatment of arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions, as it can help lubricate joints, reduce pain and increase circulation.

5. Because it is easily absorbed, castor oil has the ability to reach the deeper organs of the body. For this reason, it has long been used by ayurvedic practitioners to help break down blockages leading to water retention and weight gain.

Can I have my cataracts treated with a laser?The use of Femtosecond laser or “bladeless” cataract surgery was first performed in Hungary in 2008 and more recently in Australia in 2011. There are currently very few ophthalmology practices who utilize this technology in

Queensland.

The laser does not replace the need for surgical procedure to remove the opacified lens in the eye and replace it with a clear artificial lens. However,

it does provide for more predictable surgical incisions and reduces the amount of time for the hands-on component of the procedure.

While there are plenty of additional implied benefits of this new technology, more research is required to confirm these benefits compared to conventional cataract surgery. At this stage, the evidence suggests that the use of laser in cataract surgery appears at least as safe as conventional procedures.

If I had a cataract, I would certainly be investigating this option.

Tara BowlsIt was great to see people taking advantage of the Easter long weekend to get some Championship matches completed. Members are reminded that there are quite a few matches that need playing asap, otherwise you may be forfeited.

In “A” Grade Singles Craig Ensbey qualified for the semi-finals after accounting for Denis Sommerfeld 25 - 12. In “B” Grade Singles two of the Club’s newer members in Cliff Brauer and Dan Collins had a great match with Cliffy eventually winning 25 - 19 after 27 ends. Well done lads.

In “A” Pairs John Smith and Chris Baldwyn, subbing for Max Merry, had a 33 - 17 victory over Lenny Wright and Pop Wilson, while John teamed up with Matthew Prain and Peter Matthews in the Triples to account for Tom Duffy, Eddie Jones

(sub Peter Porter) and Chris Baldwyn 41 - 22.

In Mixed Pairs action Craig Ensbey and Rita Ramplin prevailed over Matthew Prain and Audrey Cann 22 - 14 in an entertaining match.

There was even time for Jackpot Joker Bowls on Saturday afternoon with fourteen players enjoying a game of triples and fours. The triples game was taken out by Lenny Wright, Peter Matthews and Darrell Goodwin 13 - 9 over Denis Sommerfeld, Tom Duffy and Gordon Le Busque. The fours match had a similar scoreline with John Smith, Pat Heferen, Mick Llewellyn and Darren Stark sneaking home 12 - 10 over Pop Wilson, Christopher Smith, Lorna Smith and Tracey Mills.

The morning round went to Yuleba bowlers and the afternoon round went to Chinchilla. Special thanks to all the ladies who travelled.

Once again, the sky over the Bowls Club was lit as 42 players braved the mossies. It was without a doubt that visitors had a great time on the greens as laughter flowed freely. Until the next one, thank you for coming and making it a success. Winners were made up of an all ladies team consisting of Stacey, Lana and Blake. Well done, girls!

President Tom McNamara welcomed players from Yuleba, Tara, Jandowae, Dalby, North Dalby, Miles, Chinchilla, Taroom, Wandoan, Surat and representatives from CLBA for the Men’s President Day. A perfect day for play saw Dalby Club reps walking away as Champions of the day and bowlers from Surat came in second. ‘Thank you’ to all visiting Clubs. What a great start to the bowling season as members will now start

travelling to fulfil as many club visits as possible. Now that the cooler weather is upon us, Sunday social bowls will commence at 1.30pm. We welcome new players on the greens so take advantage of this wonderful season to have a roll.

The Club is open every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays from 5pm onwards and Club rule applies to all. Fridays are BBQ nights prepared by our lovely volunteers. There is a false rumour in the township of Tara and up and down the highways amongst the travelling public, particularly the grey nomads, that the charges for an overnight stay at the Tara Lagoon is $20.00. This is incorrect and the correct charges are set out below:

1st Night: $5.00

2nd & 3rd Night: No charge

After 3rd Night: $10.00 per night for up to 14 nights including first three nights for unpowered site. $15.00 per night for up to 14 nights including first three nights for powered sites.

The above charges are current until June, at which time they will be reviewed in the annual Council Budget.

Use of the amenities block is available during the day and from 6:00pm to 6:00am via a key which is available from the Tara Caravan Park manager who does his rounds every afternoon. This is to prevent vandalism and incorrect usage of the facility.

Lynelle is state webmaster for ICPA (an educational lobby group) and is the publicity person for many local groups including the Moonie Sports Club and Moonie ICPA.

Amelia WoodGraphic DesignerAmelia is an active member of the Jandowae Community and is heavily involved with many committees in the area. She thrives in her role of motherhood, living with her young son and husband. Amelia is the newest member of the Western Downs Magazine team.

Ann is a freelance photojournalist who is also involved in several social documentary photography projects. She has a keen interest in rural communities and has recently written the history of racing in Taroom.

Julie WhelanPhotographerJulie moved to the area this year with her family from the Gold Coast. She has been a photographer for 14 years, shooting over 500 weddings. She was also a water skiier at Sea World for over 15 years. Together with water skiing, photography and journalism are her passions.

Kate Haig Graphic DesignerGrowing up in Brisbane, Kate moved to Jandowae in 1999 and is the newest member of the Western Downs Magazine Team. She has been involved with many community groups in Jandowae, and enjoys small country town life. Kate brings with her an interest in photography.
