Origin of Association’s Crest

Some of our members have inquired regarding the origin of our

crest and its significance.

The book and quill design was the achievement of a Toronto commercial artist whom we asked to

design a letterhead and crest for us back in the early days of organization, explaining to him that we

wanted something which would typify the secretary or scribe.

When the design was submitted to the committee in charge of selecting appropriate letterhead and

crest, it was immediately agreed that the book and quill could not be bettered. Not only did it depict

the working tools of the scribe but it also included the letter “A” which, as you well know, is

prominent in the name of the Association!

We are grateful to the artist for his skill in design and to Mr. W.G. Frisby (whose leadership inspired

formation of the Association) for knowing the artist personally.

(National Notes Vol. 1, No. 1, July 1957)

The Association’s crest, our distinctive emblem, has acquired an official identity. It has been certified

as our exclusive trade mark by the Registrar of Trade Marks for Canada under date of November 3,

1961, bearing the number 124,213.

Another forward step has been taken in strengthening the positive image being developed by the

Association. No more appropriate design could portray our “corporate image” than the open book

and quill; the book, the mark of the student, the seeker of improvement; the quill, the mark of the

scribe, he who executes and puts to use the knowledge acquired. The meaning is quite clear.

We intend our image to have particular significance in the minds of management. As we accept

membership in the Association, we accept personally a full share of responsibility for

communicating this meaning with integrity and with forcefulness. Constant and combined effort is

needed to mold and shape the true picture of the aims and achievements of the Association, and to

make it last. A good image is not just desirable, it is absolutely essential for success.

The official language of the certification states that registration was granted on the basis of the use

in Canada by the Association of the crest symbol for the following services:

1. The dissemination of association literature;

2. Providing its members with facilities for advanced education and a common meeting ground for

the exchange of ideas;

3. Circulation of a bulleting “National Notes” to the membership; and

4. Making available to its members and to the public an educational course by correspondence

conducted for it through an accredited Canadian University.

National Annual Meetings

The following is an excerpt from a letter written on February 21, 1983 by Margaret Stuart, Toronto

Branch, to Hardy Bunn:

“Here is a list of NATIONAL Annual Meetings since 1961. Prior to 1961, we were not a NATIONAL

GROUP, ALTHOUGH Annual Meetings were held each year.

From 1951 to 1957, the Association was comprised of three branches: Toronto (1951), Hamilton

(1955) and Ottawa (1956). The Toronto group, as the founding group, conducted all the business of

the Association and the head of the Toronto group was known as PRESIDENT.

The first Constitution of the Association of Administrative Assistants called for the formation of a

National Council when there were ten branches, but, as expansion continued, there was too much

work for one executive (Toronto) to handle and in 1957 it was decided to form an INTERIM

NATIONAL Council. At that time, the title “President” was given to the head of the Interim National

Council and the title “Chairman” was reserved for the head of each branch. Today, of course, all

heads are known as Presidents.

The early Annual Meeting were held in the Toronto area. In the early days, we didn’t have a precise

place for meetings – most of our meetings, through the help of Walter Frisby, were held in University

buildings.”

Background of The Administrative Correspondence Course

conducted by the University of Toronto

School of Continuing Studies

for the

Association of Administrative Assistants

1. Since one of the Purposes of the Association was to provide educational facilities for its

members, and since membership would, in due course, be continent-wide, it was decided by the

founding members that a specially designed correspondence course would be the most

effective means of accomplishing this purpose. Because of our close affiliation with the

University of Toronto, it was decided to approach them for assistance in setting up the type of

correspondence course desired. The first approach was made in 1953, and many discussions

followed.

2. The University’s initial reaction to our request for a correspondence course was to offer an

evening tutorial course for secretaries (considerably expanded from the secretarial tutorial

course which had been presented for some years past), to be sponsored by the Association. We

accepted the challenge, and the evening course was launched in the autumn of 1955. The

response was so great that the Department of Extension agreed to approach the University

Senate Committee with the recommendation that our correspondence course be undertaken.

3. With consent from the Senate Committee, the first two subjects of the course were written –

English Composition and Psychology – and the course was presented to the public in October

1957. By the Fall of 1959, the complete course was ready – eight subjects, six to be written in

order to achieve a certificate. In May 1960, the first graduates emerged! These graduates were

honored at a Graduates’ Dinner in September 1960 – the first of the Tri-Branch Dinners held

yearly in Toronto for the graduates, their friends, and regular members.

Our Rebrand Story

The story of our visual identity refresh started with the name change. Member demand and public

perception called for an update to the name with something less limiting than “administrative

assistants”. The Qualified Administrative Assistant certificate and designation needed a revitalized

name as well. It was hindering our ability to reach potential new enrollees, and the use of the word

“qualified” was fairly subjective. So, in 2016, the name of our organization was changed to the

Association of Administrative Professionals, and the designation evolved to become the Canadian

Certified Administrative Professional. These new names reflect our desire to welcome members

from all levels of the administration profession, from student up to skilled professional, and it

reflects our purpose to assist members in expanding their education by providing growth

opportunities.

With the guidance of Creative Solutions (Newmarket, Ontario firm who specializes in creative

business strategies and marketing solutions) and a marketing committee comprised of volunteers

from across our branches, we began the process of designing new brandmarks for the AAP and

CCAP and refreshing our visual identity.

It all began with a moodboard, a collection of logos that caught our eye, and a conversation about

what it was that we liked about the logos we each chose and what it was we wanted the AAP to

represent. Themes such as education, growth, support, knowledge sharing and collaboration arose.

A colour palette also began to emerge. Bright, fresh colours that conveyed vitality, freshness,

excitement and fun caught the eye of most committee members.

We also looked at our competitors. What was it about their brands that attracted us or what was it

that turned us off? Through that discussion, directions such as relevant, modern, bold and inclusive

emerged. We wanted something that would be recognizable and inviting to all.

That’s when the design brainstorming and refinement processes took over! Creative Solutions took

elements from the logos we preferred and applied our name and acronym to them. They presented

us with a large sampling of options to evaluate and discuss, which we narrowed down to a handful.

Then stage by stage over time… layout, icon, font, colour… we designed our new identity.

When we had the AAP design nearly set, Creative Solutions launched the CCAP brandmark design

process. They took elements of the AAP logo and from other ideas to provide us again with a menu

of options. Again, over time, we reduced and enhanced the options down until one stood out from

the crowd.

The new AAP and CCAP brandmarks are vibrant, modern and inclusive. Using colours such as soft

plum, soft blue, soft lime green and soft cherry, they attract attention and invite administrative

professionals of all ages and skill levels to check out the association and our certificate program.
