Kiaora Whanau Tena koutou e hoa ma. Senior Students Study Leave These students finish school tomorrow and the following weeks are set aside for them to prepare for their exams. All students benefit from spending time in concentrated study. If students have questions or concerns along the way they are very welcome to come into school and seek that help from staff. Best wishes to you all. Armistice Weekend 10 & 11 November This has become a very significant event for Tapawera. Please come along and support the activities. Market Day 10-2pm on Saturday at the school Sunday Commemoration Activities at the Paddock west of the village 9:30-3pm Primary students are singing a set of songs during the Saturday Market between 10 and 12:30. Thanks families for helping get these students to school. Both days will see significant displays of student work. A PB4L Thought…. “Success is almost totally dependent upon drive and persistence. The extra energy required to make another effort or try another approach is the secret of winning.” Denis Waitley Education Review Office Visit Next week we will be visited by a team of reviewers. They will be with us most of the week - starting and ending with meetings with our Board of Trustees on Monday and Thursday. Art Achievement Every year at about this time we get to see the results of our artists efforts. They are truly stunning! Our students do so well and achieve very highly on the national assessments. Well done to you all.

Volleyball Congratulations to Stephen Haunch who has been asked to be involved in coaching at a national event next week. Our volleyball success are a result of his commitment and skills. We consider this opportunity to be good professional development. Thanks Stephen. Wha Tui - Room 5 - Abel Tasman Tramp Sadly these students have made their trip in the midst of a very unpleasant patch of weather and are return home a day early. Such is life. It is reassuring to know that we have staff who are willing to take on these types of activities, but also make wise, hard decisions. Materials Projects I always enjoy checking in on what students are achieving in the Materials Rooms. Our students have a tendency to construct large and often most impressive items - tables, dog boxes, kennels, gun cabinets. Many have been completing the book work for their projects this week. From these experiences many of these students move off into the trades. A Final Shot The support that is given to students by whanau is critical. That doesn‟t mean doing the work for them, just giving them a nudge or word of encouragement in the right direction at the right time. When whanau get it right it is really obvious in student outcomes. In the same way whanau need to have the courage to challenge inappropriate actions of their children. Tena koe, tena koutou hoki mo o magi manaaki, mahi awhina. Thank you, all of you, for your caring and help. Kelvin

We have been so lucky to have family and friends support us with our learning. We have researched our ancestors, built army trenches, researched, made and eaten the food soldiers ate on the battle field, posted anzac biscuts only using the packaging available during WW1 and researched details about the date the Armistice was signed. A very big thank you to Barbara, Gill, Lynda, Jess, Kirsty, Kellie and Rebecca and Sandy Warnes

Board of Trustees November Meeting - Community Report
Community Consultation Parent and community voice is a vital part of our school. Increased local decision making leads to better meeting the needs of students and connects with their wider lives, and engages the support of their families, whānau, and communities. A one question consultation will be offered to all community members attending prize giving on Thursday 13 December. Strategic Planning Grid This is a time line for policy, appraisal, curriculum, health, finance and process reviews. This document was checked and edited for the 2019 cycle. Board of Trustees Next BOT elections are in May 2019. If you are interested in standing for election an information meeting will be held early Term 1 2019. Watch out in the newsletter for the date. http://www.trustee-election.co.nz/ Board of Trustees Device The board is looking into the benefit of each trustee having a device and email address that is dedicated to their trustee role. We are exploring raising funds for this idea from outside of our school community and school finances. Succession Planning With 2 board members leaving at the next election a discussion into streamlining the process of establishing key positions with a new board was held. Budget Is reviewed each meeting. School Support has introduced a new reporting system over the last month. This will assist with up to date and accurate information. Principal and Chair Person reports These reports wrap up the nuts and bolts of running the school. Education Review Office The ERO team will be in our school during week 5, 12-16 November. During the meeting the board revised „School Evaluation Indicators‟ looking at our progress in effective practice for improvement and learner success since our last review.
From the Library We’ve just received our latest new
books from the Lucky Book Club and
it’s thanks to you parents that we can
get so many as the more books you buy
the bigger discount we get.
If your child brings home a new book-
or any book actually-to read could you
please help them get it back to the
library on time, the longer it is at home
the more chance of it getting lost. A big
thank you to the parents who make a
big effort to teach the children this
responsibility.
We have the latest Wimpy Kid book
and for Lee Child fans it’s worth
putting your name on the list to get an
early read of his latest book. It will be
here next week.
With Armistice weekend coming up
remember we have library books
covering that time so do come in for a
browse, we’d love to see you.

Some of the Year 9 students have been creating poppies along with the Year 10's during the last few weeks while learning about Armistice Day. Here they are outside the Memorial Hall's Gate which was built in honour of those that died.

Year 11 OED Takaka Trip The Outdoor Ed programme wrapped up the year with a final rock climbing assessment at Paynes Ford. How could we not kick off our trip with another lap down the beloved Rameka Track into Takaka as the sun was beginning to set. We (Jack, Jed, Trenton, Kahu and Miss C) rode into town just as the chippie was closing and grabbed fish and chips for dinner before heading off to Hangdog campsite for the night. We woke to clearing rain and wafting smells of a hearty breakfast. Miss Campbell treated us to bacon, eggs, baked beans and even some ‘grilled’ toast! A few short steps away is the awesome climbing crag of Paynes Ford where we met our instructor Billy, talked about safety, learnt that mud and dirt is the devil to ropes and shoes before setting our ropes on Creese Wall. Everyone completed several climbs with kooky names like ‘Midwife Crisis’, ‘Blobbet’ and ‘Gorgonzola Goes’ which is right next to ‘The Fearless Vampire Killers’ which has a wooden stake attached to one of the bolts!! There were definitely a few squeals, shaky knees and tired arms but it was a great day topped off with a manu/bomb or two into the swimming hole on the Takaka River. A special thanks to Caleb for being our shuttle driver, food shopper, lead climber and back-up safety guy! Thanks guys for a super bike/camp/climb combo trip, you were marvelous. Look out 2019!

New Zeaand after WW1.
We are also thrilled to be hosting renowned
author Jennifer Beck, who has written some
beautiful children’s books, including ‘Torty

Anzac Violin.’
This Sunday, the 11th November Jennifer
will be reading her stories in the Children’s
Tent at The Paddock from 12.15pm until
12.45pm. Then later in the afternoon she will
deliver a half hour presentation on writing
books for children. She will be accompanied
by Robyn Belton who has illustrated many of

up in the era and bring a flag to wave.
