What a fortnight since the last
Newsletter! Production - Twisted
Fairytale - went off extremely
well. Thanks for all the positive
feedback. It is a challenge having
everyone involved but it is what
we do and is well worth the extra
complications.
Dad Joke
A group of tourists were watching
the re-enactment of an ancient
Egyptian religious ritual. One
turned to a nearby local, pointed
to the statue that was being
praised and asked, "Pardon me,
but what was the name of that
god supposed to be?"
"Why do you ask?" the man
replied.
The tourist shrugged. "Just idol
curiosity, I guess."
Term 3 Ends - 27 September
Term 4 Begins - 14 October
Year 9 - Lake Rotoiti Lodge
Trip
This group left happily on
Monday and looked set for a
great week. They will have an
opportunity to work closely with
students from Reefton and
Karamea Area Schools; students
who they are likely to meet
repeatedly over the coming years
through Tournament.
Grass Karts @ Tapawera -

Plans are all in place for this
event. Why not call in during the
day and see the fun?

Class Tone
I have had the opportunity to
spend time in classes this week
and it has been a very pleasant
time. It is great to have students
who interact in a well mannered
and constructive way.
Sister Schools Visit - Thursday
- 26 September
We have been asked to host a
group of 8 students from the
Phillipines for the day. We will
have a brief Mihi Whakatau to
welcome them, show them around
our school then they will spend
the balance of the day in classes.
A new experience for our
students.
Earthquake Drill - 17 October –

How can we make a difference
for our children?
Teach them kindness.
Expect the best of them.
Encourage them when they try.
Support them when they fail.
Give them your time.
Love them always.

Cawthron SciTec Expo Project
Over the last seven weeks in term three, a group of
students from Whā Tui have been doing a project about
growing oyster mushrooms with Miss Campbell. On
Tuesday 24th
September, we went to the Cawthron
SciTec Expo at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson to
display our project and speak with the judges.
Our project: It was pretty cool. There were a lot of
White Colonised Areas in our growing bags, we had
signs of pinheads so we are hoping for mushrooms.
Our project board looked awesome and attractive. I
was proud of the diary title page and the title on our
board. I would like to do another project next year but
maybe on nuclear science or tanks. – Joseph Butcher
Other projects: There was everything there from
liquids and foods, to footballs and everything in
between. The one project I found the coolest was
‘Which has more germs – boys or girls?’ There were
tonnes of entries, more than I can count. Next year I
would like to do a science project about horses. –
Chanel McGaveston
Speaking with the judges: It was very exciting talking
to the judges although nerve-wracking too. It was hard
to keep your mind on track because you really had to
think about the questions the judges were asking you.
You had to be precise with your answer. –
Emma Wallace
Doing our experiment: It was a really great pleasure
because we got to go to a science fair. We spent a lot
of time doing science and worked a lot as a team. –
Hunter Page
Working as a team: It was hard to make decisions
because there were lots of us in our group. But the
benefit was we had more brains to think. Next year I
would like to work with the same number of people in
my group. – Jada Jelinek
Ideas for next year: I was happy with our result and
next year I would like to look at toadstool mushrooms
and maybe test how poisonous they are. –
Nikau Cameron
Thanks to Miss Campbell, Ms Tovisi and Mrs
O’Donnell for helping us with handling the experiment
and getting us to the science fair.

Day at Rainbow Skifield
On Thursday the 12th
of September,
approx. 80 primary and secondary
students went to Rainbow Ski Field for
the day. It was a fun filled day of
skiing, snowboarding and playing in
the snow. A huge thanks to the
teachers and parents helpers that made
this possible.
Some student’s comments from Room
6 about their day…
It was my first time in the snow and it
was so cool. It was fun going down the
intermediate slope. (Kasey)
The ski trip was fun. I liked learning to
ski and crashing a lot. (Mathew)
I liked having lots of races and snow
ball fights with my friends. Coby,
Alastair and I had fun climbing the hill
and sliding down. (Kiana)
It was really cold, I liked falling and
playing on the big slope. (Bronco)
I liked trying to Ski. (Charlie)
I had a lot of fun. My favourite part was
learning to ski and seeing snow for the
first time. (Alyse)
It was fun. It was my first time in the
snow. (Caanan)

Whenua Iti Mini Adventures
Trip Room 2 & 3. The junior syndicate trip to Whenua Iti
was fantastic. We had good weather so
hot in fact it felt like summer; the
parents and children thoroughly enjoyed
the team building, mapping, trusting and
obstacle courses they participated in.
Some of the highlights included
lunchtime games of football, chase,
touch and others. Lots of support from
our parents, with your support we are
able to do these activities.
Thank you to:

Board of Trustees The Board of Trustees held their tri annual elections in June and it is my long overdue privilege to introduce our new Board. They have had an intensely busy start to their new term but have certainly proven to be a conscientious bunch who are well on the way to forming a strong and reliable team. Parent representative members who have returned are Mark Radloff and myself and eager new members are Louise Simpson and Ryan Thatcher. Denise Shellock is staff representative and Grace Mytton has recently been re-elected as student representative. Kelvin, as Principal, is a Board member as of right. We are working on having photos and info about each board member on our schools website to ensure we are known to our community, so check it out soon if you are not sure who we are. Our board is keen to make themselves known to our school community and you will most likely see at least one or more of us at most school events. Please feel welcome to say hi and let us know any thoughts or ideas you may have about our beautiful school. Despite our silence in the school newsletter lately the Board of Trustees have been very busy with full meeting agendas and several extra meetings as well. One of the agenda items we have been discussing recently is the merits of joining the government’s school fee scheme and you will be receiving more information about this soon. Kelvin has had the second part of his annual Principals appraisal completed. There is a tremendous amount of information gathered by the appraiser who is Brenda Ellis of Salisbury School. As part of the appraisal students, staff and BOT were interviewed by Brenda. The following points are some of the comments from our students.
‘Gentle, friendly and calm, never gets angry, he is not a grumpy person’
‘He is there when you need him and will help if you have problems. He is laid back, is cool and a decent
person
‘He is very fair and takes our point of view into account’
I would like to thank Kelvin for his hard work and dedication to our school and his genuine care for our students. Our Board members will once again be taking turns in writing reports for the school newsletter after each meeting to keep you up to date. I was lucky to accompany our senior students to the Murchison/Tapawera combined ball on the 14th September. Our seniors are a fun loving bunch who were polite and friendly and well behaved. We can be very proud of them as young adults representing our school. Carolyn Ellis - Board of Trustees Chairperson
Thank you The Do-Re-Mi group would like to thank Vicki Smiler for helping us sew our costumes for production. Thank you from Alyse, Grace, Harmony, Zoie, Ella, Grace, Leroy, Holly , Saryn , Mela, and Lucy
