SECRETARY NOTES:Fellow 505 Sailors,1998 was quite a year for the 505 Ameri-

can Section. There was a flurry of activityleading up to the worlds in September. Asa result, the organization has grown in sizeand strength. I am proud to say that the505 American Section is a much better or-

I�m looking forward to a great year forthe 505 class. Following the Worlds wehave received a tremendous amount of posi-tive exposure, and now is the time for us totake advantage of that exposure. Now isthe time to make preparations for spring,so we can get all the people who read aboutthe 505 out on the water and hooked on theclass. While the class association can helpwith getting people in contact with the rightpeople, what it really takes to bring some-one into the class is some personal atten-tion and hand holding at the local level.With that in mind everyone in the classshould think about who they know thatmight be interested in the 505 and get themout for a ride.

Also in this issue of Tank Talk are thedetails of the ranking system that was sug-gested at the AGM. We will be testing thesystem during this season, and I would liketo get comments and suggestions on howit should be modified and improved for thefuture.

As always, I am happy to receive anycomments or suggestions aboutmaking theclass better for all of us. Don�t forget to

pay your dues and fill out the survey thatJesse prepared.

Under new leadership, we have imple-mented numerous programs designed tofoster growth at the fleet level. Sol Marinihas done a great job of directing many ofthese efforts. I consider these changes tobe timely. It is clear to me that many sailorsnow entering the 505 class are new to dingysailing, do not have an abundance of timeto travel and are slightly older than wascommon just a few years ago. These arethe people that the 505 American Sectionseeks to support the most. However, don�tsit back and wait for the American Sectionto come to you! Get involved with yourfleet and region. If you don�t have fleetstatus in your area, you should make it atop priority to gain enough strength to getsanctioned.

By now you have received the annualmailing from the national office. If youhaven�t done so already, please submit yourdues check. A self-addressed, stampedenvelope was included, so no excuses foranyone! Also included in the mailing wasa Membership Survey. The results of the

survey will help us understand the demo-graphics of the class so that the AmericanS e c t i o ncan betterserve itsmembers.Some ofthe infor-m a t i o nwill beused in adatabasenow be-ing devel-oped byD a v eSte t son .The data-base will help us track the sale of boats andthe location of members. Lastly, the sur-vey is intended to help us locate lost 505�sand wayward members. Please take the timeto fill out the survey and we will post theresults in the Spring, 1999 Tank Talk.

After much deliberation, I have decidedthat I will end my tenure as Secretary/Trea-surer in 1999. I can no longer put forth theeffort that the job demands. Recognizingthis is important for all of our leadership,and I would encourage every class repre-sentatives to do their own self-evaluation

from time to time. I will be accepting nomi-nations for the position that I will vacate

after the 1999 North Americans inCorpus Christi. The position is verywell defined and organized at thispoint, and applicants can rest assuredthat I will step them through the tran-sition process. I would prefer to dothis before the North Americans.Please contact me if you have any spe-cific questions.

1999 Dues are due!505 American Section Members,All of you should have received the an-

nual mailing by now complete with a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Last year Iwas able to also include the internationalballot with the annual mailing, but I didn�tmanage to get it in this year. Therefore, Ihope to get the ballot in the next issue ofTank Talk due out soon. I would like ev-eryone to fill out the ballot and return tome. However, since the provision was madeto vote via email directly to the internationaloffice, you may do that if you wish. Mygoal is to have 100% voter turnout amongour members. I will be asking Chris Thorneto provide me the names of those peoplewho voted over email. I will be providinghim with the names of class members andwhether they own boats.

So, in the coming weeks, I�ll be sendingout reminders to get the vote out.

As an American Section class officer, Iwould advise members to vote in favor ofall the proposed changes. These changeswere discussed in length at the AGM andmet with favor by the majority of the mem-bers in attendance. The most controver-sial issue was that of the fixed fee advertis-ing levy. As I recall, there was some oppo-sition to dropping the levy to 50 poundssterling and the proposal failed after PipPearson exercised the final vote (there wasa tie). There was far less opposition to the100 pound fixed fee. Please check the min-utes for accuracy.

We had the second largest voter turnoutlast year with 47 as I recall. We now haveover 200 members. Please vote.

Molds for Sale - Build your own fleet! I have bought a building in Watsonville

(just south of Santa Cruz) and will be mov-ing my business there in the next 6 weeks.I still have the 505 molds and would like togive them to any one who is interested inbuilding some boats. There seems to be arumor that these molds produce boats thatdo not measure. The opposite is true. Webuilt a new plug and hull mold at the end ofour tenure as a 505 builder. The shape is'pushed' in the direction of the Hamlin mold,and is very fair and symmetrical and mea-sures without a problem. One of our lastboats was measured at the Worlds in SF,and Jason Spiller measured several others.

I really don�t want to cut the molds upand send them to the dump (I have toomuch time and effort invested and appre-ciation for the 505 to do that), so if youknow anyone who might be interested,please let me know. I need to get the moldsmoved asap.

505 Coaching ProgramThe American Section of the Int. 505

Class is pleased to announce its sponsor-ship of Coaching clinics for 505 Class mem-bers. These clinics can be seperate events,or part of existing events. Coaching can beprovided by qualified sailors from the 505Class, or from outside organizations. Ifneeded the American Section Exec.Comittee can asssit in finding a qualifiedcoach. To recieve funding, the organizingfleet needs to submit a proposal to theAmerican Section Exec.Comittee (ASEC), andcomplete a report after theclinic has taken place.The American Section willreimburse the local fleetfor coaching fees and thecoaches travel expensesbased on the followingguidelines.

1) Both Skipper andCrew participating ina sponsored clinicmust be class mem-bers.

2) Maximum amount per clinic to bepaid by the American Section = $4003) The American Section will pay 5%of cost per class member attending theevent, 100% for 20 membersparticitating, up to the limit in Set in 2.4) ASEC can increase the funding forevents up to the maximum amount setin 2, based on a special request fromthe local fleet.5) Host fleet is responsible for lodg-ing, meals and local transportation, ifneeded, for the coach.6) All requests for coaching fundingmust be approved by the AmericanSection Exec. Committee.

Fleet captains and Event organizersshould contact an American Section Officerwith any questions or requests for fund-ing.

tional Office has received your dues? As amatter of policy, the National Office WILLNOT send out written notification to eachmember when dues are received. If youreceive Tank Talk, you are a member. Youcan also contact the National Office byphone or email to verify your membershipstatus.

Question - I just joined the 505 Ameri-can Section and I�m wondering where myfirst issue of TT is?

Answer - Tank Talk is published quar-terly. We only print what we need to dis-tribute to save money. Therefore, if youjust joined, you may not get a new issue ofTank Talk until the next time its published.However, most new members get a recentcopy mailed to them immediately if one isavailable.

Question - How come there aren�t morecool photos of the 505 in every issue ofTank Talk?

Answer - Tank Talk is a low budget op-eration. We can�t afford to pay photogra-phers to come on the water to take picturesat our events. However, we always work adeal with photographers who do take pic-tures at larger events (NAs & Worlds).Onne Van der Wal, Peter Danby and otherprofessional sailing photographers havegratiously donated pictures to our cause.If someone could figure out how to rig a"mast cam" or a "trap cam" on their 505, wewould gladly print your pictures.

Question - How come there aren�t morerigging articles and pictures in TankTalk?

Answer - All articles in Tank Talk comefrom you, the member. We would love toprint more rigging articles, but we needpeople to submit them. If you have an in-teresting rigging idea or you have com-pleted some new rigging, write an article,draw a sketch, take some pictures and mailto your friendly Tank Talk editor.

INTERNATIONAL 505 CLASS YACHT RACING ASSOCIATION POSTAL BALLOT

Ballot on Rule Changes.At the AGM in Hyannis a number of rule changes were ap-

proved. The Rule change necessary to make all future Interna-tional Championships OPEN was approved by the meeting and nofurther action is necessary. However, although other changes wereall approved at the meeting, these now have to approved by aballot of the whole membership.

What are the Changes?The detailed proposals are set out later. There are changes pro-

posed to the Constitution to bring the way the class is governedup to date. There are proposals to change the way in which wemeasure sails to bring us into line with the ISAF system. Finallythere is a proposal to introduce a fixed levy for boats advertisingat international championships instead of the current system ofcharging a double entry fee. Notes explaining the reasons for thechanges follow each proposal.

Who may vote?All boat owning members, or part boat owning members may

vote for the Constitutional and Measurement Changes. All mem-bers may vote on the advertising levy.

How do I vote?A ballot form can be found on page 6. This can be returned by

post to your National Secretary or to me at the International Of-fice. You can also vote by E Mail - make sure you put all theinformation on the form in your message. All votes must be witheither your National Secretary or me NO LATER THAN 1 APRIL1999.

When will the Changes take effect?If approved the change to the Advertising Levy will take effect

from 1 May 1999. All other changes will be effective from 1 Janu-ary 2000, subject to ratification by the ISAF.

1: Resolutions to change ConstitutionAmend existing Rules as follows:

7.0 Officers of the International Association Officers7.1 The officers, whose terms of office shall commence on 1January, shall be:

7.1.1 an International President, an International VicePresident, an International Secretary, an InternationalTreasurer, who shall reside in the same country as theInternational Secretary, a Chairman of the InternationalRules Committee.7.1.2 All Officers shall be elected for a term of two years.The President and Vice President shall be elected in yearsof even number, the remaining officers in years of oddnumber.

Auditor7.5 An Auditor shall be appointed by the Association at eachAnnual General Meeting and shall audit the annual accountsof the Association. The International Treasurer shall com-plete the draft accounts and arrange for these to be forwardedto the Auditor as soon as possible after the end of each year,together with any records and receipts requested by the Au-ditor On completion of the Audit the International Secretaryshall immediately send copies to all Members of the IGC andthe National Secretaries. The Treasurer shall arrange for pre-sentation of the audited accounts to the next Annual GeneralMeeting of the International Association.

Note: At present there is no provision for a Vice President, whichis clearly sensible for continuity. It is also felt that the Chairman ofthe Rules Committee should be an Officer elected by the member-ship - at present it is not clear by who or how he is appointed. TheAuditor is currently shown as an Officer. This is incorrect. TheAuditor is appointed by the members to keep a check on thefinancial dealings of the Executive and therefore he must be inde-pendent, not part of it.

9.0 International Committees9.1 International Governing Committee ('IGC")

9.1.1 This Committee shall consist of the InternationalOfficers and a representative of each National Associa-tion.

Note: The existing rule stipulates that the President of eachNational Association shall be on the IGC. The proposal allowseach country to nominate whom they like.

9.2 International Executive Committee ("IEC");9.2.1 This committee shall consist of the five Officerselected or appointed in accordance with Rule 7.9.2.2 Under delegated Authority from the IGC the IECshall be responsible for the management of the Interna-tional Office, the issue of sail numbers and the registra-tion of boats.9.2.3 Meetings shall be held upon giving of not less thanseven days notice in writing.9.2.4 The Committee may delegate its powers to any oneor more of its members, or co-opt any other Member.

Note: Currently the IEC is the Int Secretary and Treasurer plusthe President and Secretary of the country where the Int Secretarylives. The International President is not involved. In the past thishas meant that the class has effectively been controlled by theUK. With modern communication there is no longer any practicalreason for the existing arrangement. All countries should have theopportunity of nominating and electing the Officers of the IEC

9.3 International Rules Sub Committee ("IRC")9.3.1 This Sub Committee shall consist of the Chairmanelected or appointed under Rule 7.1.3 and four otherMembers whose appointment shall be confirmed by theIGC

quirements. In the event of conflict with these Class Rules,the Class Rules shall prevail.

Rule 8.1.5 to be deleted and replaced with:8.1.5 Sail reinforcement is not restricted.

MainsailRule 8.2.2 to be deleted and replaced with:

8.2.2 The luff and the foot of the mainsail shall be secured tothe mast and boom respectively over at least 80 per cent oftheir lengths.

Rule 8.2.3 to be deleted and replaced with:8.2.3 The following dimensions, including boltropes wherefitted, shall not be exceeded:

Top width 127mmWidth at right angles to luff 325mm below head point270mmThree-quarter width 1120mmHalf width 1950mmLeech length 6960mm

Rule 8.2.4 to deleted and replaced with:8.2.4 Not more than four battens may be used to support theleech. At the leech, the centre of the top batten pocket shallbe between 1450mm and 1550mm from the head point, and the

the IGC and IEC. This proposal rectifies the situation. Also theexisting rule provides for a committee of at least eight (four eachfrom Britain and France). The weighting in favour of these twocountries is inappropriate and the Committee does not need to beas large.

2: BallotsInsert additional Rule:

11.3 No ballot may be held within three years of a previousballot on the same or a substantially similar proposal, exceptwith the approval of the IGC.

Note: This is to prevent repeated attempts to push through amotion defeated at ballot, which is wasteful of time and resources.

3: SubscriptionsAmend existing Rule:

14.3.2 The amount of any change in the annual subscriptionshall be determined by IEC and ratified by Members at theAnnual General Meeting.

Note: The present rule is inconsistent with rules 4.1.3 and 9.1.3.3

The benefits of the changes are:The proposed rules will be easier for sailmakers

and measurers to understand, since most of thedefinitions are in the ISAF booklet. Some computerprogrammes for sail design give ISAF measure-ments as part of the output.

5.7 A yacht which displays a Category B advertisementshall pay an additional fee of £100 (One hundred pounds sterling),such sum being subject to annual review by the IEC. The OrganisingAuthority shall retain half of the additional fee collected underthis rule and allocate it to the Championship budget for the gen-eral benefit of all competitors. It shall forward the other half of thefee to the International Office.

Note: This follows the ballot last year when a proposal to abol-ish the levy was defeated. The IGC accepts some of the problemscaused by the current arrangement of charging double the entryfee, particularly where the trend has been for entry fees to in-crease significantly because they include many non sailing extras.

1. Introduction1.1 The objective of the ranking system is to record and publicise

the relative performance, during each season, of the members ofthe 505 Class American Section at national and international eventsspecified on the US Ranking List.

1.2 The ranking system will also be used to select the US quali-fication for restricted events such as World Championships.

1.4 The races will be category �B� events.

2. Certificates for Boats Being Ranked.2.1 New boats must be fully measured before racing in a US

ranking event.2.2 A valid measurement certificate must be produced on entry

to a US ranking event. Failure to do so willl result in disqualifica-tion, unless proof of certification can be produced within 14 days.

2.3 All sails must be officially measured and stamped beforebeing used in a US ranking event race.

3. Membership of the 505 Association3.1 For results scored in a US ranking event to count towards

the US ranking the helm and crew must comprise a full member andat least an associate member of the 505 Class American Section.

3.2 Either the helm or crew can elect to be ranked, and henceselected for qualification for restricted events, but the choice mustbe declared on entry to the system for that year. Unless otherwisestated the helmsman will be assumed.

4. Race Organisation4.1 The Racing Rules of Sailing for 1997 - 2000, the Prescriptions

of the US Sailing Association, the rules of the International 505Class Yacht Racing Association and the Sailing Instructions shallapply.

4.2 Gate starts are preferred, however, line starts may be usedwhen conditions dictate. The choice will be made by the RC.

4.5 Whenever possible a US weekend event shall consist of aminimum of six races. A minimum of two races should be held onSaturday.

4.6 Completeing a minimum of six races in a weekend may re-quire shorter races and/or back to back racing. When there is aseries of back to back races, in order to reduce the waiting timebetween races, it is recommmended that with exception of the lastrace the finish should be at the end of the downwind leg. Alterna-tively a start/finsh gate one third of the way up the first beat couldbe used. This will be at the discretion of the RC.

4.8 The 720 degree turns penalty shall apply for breaking rulesin part 2 of the Racing Rules of Sailing.

4.9 Any special restrictions applying to competitors shall beadequately advertised before an event.

4.10 Racing marks that are clearly visible shall be provided. Aminimum size of 1.3m for inland sailing and 2m for sea sailing isstrongly recommended.

5. Calculation of US Event Results.5.1 Each yacht that finishes a race shall score points according

to theLow Point System in rule A2.2 in The Racing Rules of Sailing.5.2 Points for Yachts that do not score finishing points.

5.2.1 Point for Yachts that do not score finishing points shallbe based on the declared entry which is the number of yachtsfor which valid entries have been recieved.5.2.2 A yacht that ranks as a starter but does not start or doesnot finish or is a premature starter or retires shall score pointsequal to the declared entry plus one.5.2.3 A yacht which is disqualified shall score points equal tothe declared entry plus two.

5.3 Ties in the event will be broken by discarding the worstindividual result included and totalling the remaining options.

5.4 Scoring5.4.1 If three or more races are sailed there will be one discard.5.4.2 If only 2 races are sailed both will count towards theoverall result.5.4.3 If only 1 race is sailed it will be the overall result.

5.5 Return of results5.5.1 For US events, details of the overall results, the numberof races counted and the highest number of starters on any ofthe races counted, plus the appropriate meeting levy, must bereturned to the Secretary of the 505 Association AmericanSection or the person designated by the Secretary, by theevent organiser, immediately after the event. Failure to do somay mean that the event will not be included in that yearsnational ranking calculations and the event may have na-tional ranking status removed in subsequent years.5.5.2 For foreign events it is the responsibility of the highestplaced American helm to return the above information. Again,failure to do so may mean that the event will not be includedin the national ranking calculations.

6. Calculation of US Ranking.6.1 The US Ranking will be calcualted and published through-

out year.6.2 The latest date for the calculation of the final annual US

Ranking will be 30 November.6.3 The overall results of any event on the North American

Ranking List with 10 or more starters in any one of the racescounted, are eligible to be included in the US Ranking calculation.Non US events events are eligible provided they meet all otherrequirements.

6.4 A ranking factor (f) or between 1.0 and 1.6 will be appliedbased on the difficulty of the event, for example: Local open meet-ing 1.0: World championship 1.6. For non US events, the rankingfactor applied by the National Class Section of the host will beused. If a ranking factor is not applied by the host, it will bedetermined by the American National Executive Commitee for thepurposes of US ranking calculations

6.5 The ranking points (RP) for an event will be calculated asfollows:

f=the ranking factors=the highest number of starters in any of the races countedx=the event resultsRP=f*100*((s+1-x)/s)

6.6 A multiplier (m) can be applied to the ranking points whichdepends on the number of races counted towards the overall re-sult:

m=1 for 1 race;m=2 for 2 races;m=3 for 3 races;m=4 for 4 or more races.

Having trouble building that Fleet? Hereare some tips from one of the masters onthe subject.

I have a great deal of experience with fleetbuilding. Here are some suggestions I madeto a friend running an IC Fleet in Mass.These were posted on our discussion fo-rum (http://sailingsource.com/interclub/)

1) Sell boats - most important job for afleet captain. Get those owners who aren�tactive to sell. Best way to do this for stub-born owners is to find a buyer and havethem make a cash offer. You have to getboats in the hands of

people that will sail them.2) Propoganda - use all forms of media to

get the word out that your fleet is the bestand that people love sailing in it. Alwaysstretch the truth about how good the fleetis when someone from outside inquires. Iknow this doesn�t sound ethical, but itworks. We are lucky to have SpinSheet, agreat web master and an easy town to mar-ket in. We also have a great RC person.Having an email list is incredibly valuable.

3) Keep everyone that is sailing pumpedup. We foster fun sailing and close compe-

4) Get someone to manage a crew list. Lotsof people don�t sail because they can�t findcrew. Go online with the list

5) Surround yourself with other good lead-ers. We now have excellent people in everyslot and we function like a small organiza-tion. I think Winthrop is much the same.

6) Help people with their boats. I havehelped numerous people with rebuilds. Whathas happened is that people now take agreat deal of pride in their boats. Every oldboat in our fleet has been updated, someextensively (see the rebuild on IC 357).

7) Try to get new people in boats for asail. We have a promotional regatta everyyear that always gets us new members.

8) Never, never stop pluggin�. Keep talk-ing up the fleet to everyone at parties, work,during the summer season and anywhereelse you get into a sailing conversation.

505 MAINTENANCE - HOW I LEARNED TO CHECK EVERYTHING

All of us like sailing 505�s. How many ofus like working on 505�s as well? Be hon-est. If we can�t be sailing, then tweaking,modifying, improving, or otherwise fuss-ing over our boats is probably the next bestthing. Like all good 505 sailors, we spendan inordinate amount of time debating andresearching those fussy little things thatmight just squeak out a little more speedupwind or maybe make the boat point justa little bit higher. But what about all thosethings we take for granted? Things we useeverytime we sail, but maybe don�t pay thatmuch attention to, at least until they fail.

Once I failed to notice a missing capturering on the traveller block of my main sheet.Of course the wind had come up to 25-30knots when the pin decided to fall out. Nowmy mechanical advantage on the mainsheetwas reduced to a 1:1. To say this made thetrip upwind to the harbor interesting is anunderstatement. I�m sure all of you havesuffered some type of equipment failuresimiliar to mine. Fortunately, we return un-scathed and maybe a little wiser. Do youthink I check the traveller pins now? Youbet. I also bet you check those items thathave caused you problems in the past aswell. But how do you know you�ve checkedeverything? Once you start noticing somewear and tear, do you add it to your mentalchecklist? You know, the list that residesin your head along with kid�s soccer prac-tice times, when its time to change the oil inthe car, and those important phone num-bers you have memorized. So maybe if youare serious about this sailing thing then

maybe we should become a little more or-ganized? Maybe we should actually writesomething down? After all, I bet theAmerica�s Cup teams rely on somethingmore then just mental checklists. Thenagain, we can always wish for their mainte-nance budgets.

Some of us setup our boats everytimewe sail. Others keep their boats at yachtclubs. Some of us store our boats indoors.Others store them outside. Some cover theirboats, bring them indoors in the off seasonand some don�t have an off season. Thismakes for maintenance unique for each ofus. Yet there are probably some basicthings that apply to all of us. Let�s figureout where to start.

One of the first things that I thought ofis what is maintenance and what is a modi-fication? For the sake of developing a sys-tem that works, everything you do to yourboat should be put on your list. Mainte-nance, modifications, or just wishing to the505 Boat Fairy should be put down. Thatway everything can be tracked. Everythingcan be looked at, thought about, done awaywith, or moved up the list as your financesor available time change. It can serve as amemory jogger or a maintenance history foryour boat that just might increase the valueof it to the next owner.

Now that we agree to put everythingdown on the list, how should we describeeach item? A good place to start would beto establish the following columns at a mini-mum:

· Description - A column to describe

the problem, improvement, or modificationto be accomplished.

· Date Completed - A column to notewhen the item was completed.

· Remarks - A column to add anycomments or narrative that we think mightbe important to remember.

For those of us who are cronic list mak-ers, we might want to consider the follow-ing columns:

· Priority - A column to allow us tosort those items that we feel are more im-portant than others. You could establish asimple priority system such as High/Lowor 1/2/3.

· Buy - A column to indicate youhave to buy something to complete this itemor list items that are needed to completethis entry.

· Cost - This should probably be ahidden column as it does not apply to anyof us and only leaves a paper trail for ourspouses or significant others.

· Labor - Again another column thatdoesn�t apply to us, but might help yourank items that are more labor intensive thanothers.

So now I�ve created a list and agreed thateverything should go on it. If you justbought your 505 and have no idea as towhat to put on your list, here are some ar-eas to check to give you some ideas. Pullthe centerboard and check the leading/trail-ing edges and the pin area. A board that isdamaged will allow water to seep into theboard and cause further damage. Checkall your standing rigging and especiallyhigh load areas. How are the chainplates,any cracking or bending? Are there anyfrayed cables or worn lines? Check all yourrunning rigging. Are there any frayed lines,worn shockcord takeups, or ragged ends?What about worn or damaged blocks? Howabout checking all your wood surfaces?Check to make sure all your wooden areasare sealed and impervious to water. Don�thave anything on your list yet or it lookstoo short? Then how about scratches inthe hull, water in the tanks, or all those lineslying in the bottom of the boat. Rudderfittings, inspection ports, drain plugs, etc.Need to increase the purchase on yourouthaul? Are there things you have to thinkabout how they work in order to use them?Then maybe there is a better way. Wishyou had a new mast ram? List it! Weighyour boat, to determine if it�s overweight.Look for ways to reduce weight. Put itdown on the list. Put it all down.

Ok, now I have a list, I have items on itand it seems to make sense so what do I donow? USE IT! Keep updating and chang-ing it. If you fall into the habit of usingyour list, you�ll find that it�s easier to man-age your maintenance program and keepthose repairs and improvements on track.Remember to update that list right after youget off the water and check it before youleave the dock. Maybe way before youleave. Keep your sails dry and folded prop-erly, wash off salt water and dirt, make sureyou store all your lines and gear in cool,dry places. As Graham Alexander is fondof saying, "Sail Fast, But Sail Smart". Hav-ing a good maintenance system is smart.Start now and get organized.

Older boats with non-cored tanks: At-tach the spinny ratchet block on the tran-som. It is a lot stronger location. But Ithink it won�t allow the stopper balls to workby slamming the block. (I�m guessing, wedon�t have the stopper balls on the spinnysheets.

Gross Trap adjuster: (stolen from Laserhiking strap adjuster) (See pic) Not so surehow useful it is, but it is *real* cool. Youcan�t adjust it with load on it. You still havethe normal adjusters below it. We also haveit on the spinny halyard retriever block onthe transom. I think this is for a medium vs.chicken chute (sounds good at least)

West Marine 505 North American ChampionshipsMay 31, 1999-June 4, 1999

VENUE The Corpus Christi Yacht Club, as the Organizing Authority, takes pleasure in offering its venue to theInternational 505 Class. Corpus Christi boasts strong, steady trade winds blowing unobstructed over a warmcoastal bay. CCYC is a full service club with a history of excellent race management in major championships.

ELIGIBILITY The regatta is open to all International 505 Class Yachts with a valid measurement certificate. Both membersof each crew must be members of the International 505 Class. Entries must comply with RRS 75.1 with regardto US Sailing or other national authority membership. Yachts and sails will be measured prior to entry and aresubject to measurement at any time during the event. Proper, completed entry must be postmarked by May 1,1999. Late entries may be accepted at the discretion of the Principal Race Officer, and must be accompaniedby a late fee of $75.

RULES The regatta will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing 1997-2000 as amended January 1, 1999 (RRS), theInternational 505 Class Rules, this Notice of Regatta (except as any of these are altered by the SailingInstructions), and the Sailing Instructions. The Sailing Instructions will be available at on-site registration.This regatta is designated Category B with respect to advertising, Appendix G, RRS. Boats carrying CategoryB advertising must pay a $50 advertising fee.

MEASUREMENT Valid measurement certificates must be presented at check-in on May 31, 1999. Yachts and sails will bemeasured prior to entry and are subject to measurement at any time during the event. Measurement shallinclude verification of �all-up� boat weight (fully-rigged boat without sails) and dimensions of all sails(maximum of 2 sets).

SCORING The Low Point Scoring System, RRS A2, will apply. Seven races are scheduled, of which four must becompleted to constitute a regatta. Each competitor�s worst score will be discarded only if six or more races arecompleted. This changes RRS A2.1.

COURSES Olympic triangle courses and variations thereof will be utilized, with approximately equilateral triangles used.Gate starts will be utilized. The racing area will be approximately one half to one mile from the marina.

ATTRACTIONS Shore-side activities include the Texas State Aquarium, USS Lexington aircraft carrier and flight museum,Padre Island beaches along the Gulf of Mexico, Greyhound Racetrack, and many museums and shops in themarina area.

SCHEDULE Boats will be welcome on club premises Saturday, May 29 through Saturday, June 5. Those wishing to arrivesooner or leave later may make arrangements with the Corpus Christi Municipal Marina at (361) 882-7333.Registration and measurement will take place Monday, May 31 from 0900 to 1600. A practice race will takeplace May 31st at 1300. Competitor briefing and a welcoming Mexican buffet are scheduled that night at 1900at CCYC. Racing will take place Tuesday, June 1st through Friday, June 4th. Two races per day, with one raceon Friday, are anticipated. Up to three races per day may be conducted in order to complete seven races in thescheduled time frame. Daily awards and refreshments will be provided pool-side after racing. An awardsbanquet Friday, June 4th at 1900 at CCYC will conclude the regatta.

AWARDS Trophies will be awarded to skippers and crew placing first through fifth. In addition, first place trophies willbe awarded to winners of each race.

SUPPORT BOATS Competitors will not be allowed to communicate with non-competitors other than race committee personnelfrom the time they leave the marina each day until the completion of the final race of each day. Communicationfor the purpose of safety is excepted.

HOTELS A block of rooms has been reserved at the Travelodge Marina Grande Hotel, located two blocks from CCYC,at discounted rates of $65. Reservations must be made by May 1 at (361) 883-5111 . Why Your Centerboard Needs to be Per-fect

One of the biggest performance improve-ments I ever made was when I replaced anold centerboard in my first 505 with a newLindsay gybing centerboard. The differ-ence was more than a new suit of sails. Agreat centerboard is also my secret weaponin my 22 year old and otherwise hopelesslyuncompetitive Albacore.

The Waterat foils - and the Lindsay foilswe used to use - are normally shaped to aNACA 00 family section. These sectionsare much more forgiving of nicks and dings- and our less than perfect steering - thanthe laminar flow sections. None the less, allthe performance improvement you get froma great centerboard is only there if you keepthe centerboard in near perfect condition.When was the last time you checked youcenterboard for nicks and dings? Any im-perfections can increase turbulence anddrag. Apart from robbing you of speed andpointing, a damaged centerboard can ab-sorb water, weakening it and eventuallyleading to it breaking. Now that is a perfor-mance (and dollar) robber!

How to Make a New Foil BetterWaterat does an excellent job building

foils; I think Larry's blades are the bestavailable. The one area where I think theycan be slightly improved by the owner isthe finish. Waterat spray paints the boardswith a very high quality two part polyure-thane, which forms a very tough, shiny fin-ish. I believe the blade surface can be im-proved by careful wet sanding with 600 orsmoother sandpaper. This removes thegloss and any orange peel on the finish,resulting in the smoothest, fairest shapepossible. I do this on centerboards I amtaking to a World Championship.

However, as Larry points out, wet sand-ing the foil removes that very tough shinyfinish, revealing a softer layer underneath.Once you wet sand a board, you will haveto keep wet sanding it, as it will scratchmore easily. A wet sanded surface also getsdirty more easily, and therefore requiresmore maintenance than the smooth shinyfinish. Eventually, the foil will have to berefinished, and you can start all over.

I sail on the Chesapeake Baywhich has a (primarily) soft mud bottom.Soft mud is a lot better than rocks, but themud has the texture of 100 grit sandpaper,and does ruin the tip. Another easy way todamage the board is to hit something in thewater. This seems to happen most fre-quently in spring, when lots of debris havewashed into rivers and then into the lakes,bays and oceans we sail on. Any grit or dirtin the centerboard trunk will also scratchthe foil as you raise and lower it. I also find

that the centerboard bolt sometimes makesthe bolt hole bigger and exposes wood, sothat water can get in. Even if you never runaground, never hit anything in the water,and never have dirt in your centerboardtrunk, just raising and lowering the boardwill gradually scratch the airfoil portion, andwill wear away the widest part of the cen-terboard head. All of these slow you down!Any damage that allows water to get intothe spruce core is bad. The board will beboth heavier and weaker. Check your boardfrom time to time, and anytime you thinkyou may have damaged it. Repair any ar-eas with uncovered wood immediately.How to Repair the damage

Small scratches can be sanded smooth,or a soft filler can be applied, and thensanded or filed smooth. Anytime you fillwith a material harder to sand than the poly-urethane finish, you will have trouble sand-ing down to a smooth fair shape. Dents anddings in the leading edge are a little morechallenging; you want to end up with ex-actly the same shape on the leading edge -this is critical! Cut or file away any brokenfiberglass or wooden fibers, and then useepoxy and filler to both seal the wood, andfill the dent. I find that West epoxy withmicroballoons mixed in works well. It isstrong, yet files or sands easily. Being softerthan the polyurethane finish, you shouldbe able to sand or file it to fit, without tak-ing too much paint off around the damagedarea. I usually shape the repaired area us-ing a medium file. I find that if I do not presstoo hard, the file does not scratch the poly-urethane on the surrounding area, but doeseasily remove the excess filler material stick-ing above the surface.

Trailing edge damage is easier to fix.Clean out up broken glass or wood fiber,then find a piece of semi rigid plastic - asmall piece of mylar is perfect. Tape the plas-tic to one side of the blade, so that you arecreating a mold for one side of the dam-aged area. Then using an epoxy and fillermixture, fill in the damaged area. Trailingedges are inherently weak, if the area youare repairing is much more than a thumb-nail in size, you should reinforce the epoxywith a little fiberglass cloth. Simply lay thecloth in, and make sure it is saturated withepoxy. The low density fillers likemicroballoons reduce the weight you areadding in the repair, but this is usually in-significant for a small repair. Low densityfillers do make the repair easier to sand andfile to shape. High density fillers like

microfibers make the repair stronger.I use the same mylar approach to repair-

ing a CB bolt hole. After I�ve cleaned awayall the broken material, I tape one side ofthe bolt hole closed with the mylar, andthen put epoxy and filler in the other side.Sometimes putting just the right amount offiller and a second piece of mylar on topresults in a repair that needs minimal fillingand sanding; you just have to drill the newbolt hole through the filled area. The CBbolt hole in the centerboard should be loseenough that the board can gybe from sideto side without being constrained by theCB bolt; it should not be any larger than itneeds to be.

From time to time, I build back up the

gybing head of the centerboard. I clean upthe worn area with sandpaper or a file, mix abatch of epoxy, using a high density filler(I�ve used both microfibers and carbonpowder for this), and then applied it overthe worn area. I shape it immediately with aclean trowel, scraping off much of the filler,but leaving the filled area almost flush withboth planes of the gybing head (you shouldsee a distinct ridge where the two planesmeet). After the filler has cured, I carefullyfile and then wet sand the repaired area.Rudders

Though I believe rudders are less criticalthan centerboards, I repair them the sameway. They are built using the same materi-als as the centerboards. A common prob-

Thatportion of the rudder is typically damagedover time by pulling the rudder off - therudder hits the bottom transom gudgeon.This can easily be fixed using the same flex-ible mylar used to repair the centerboard.This time, you force the mylar to wraparound the leading edge of the rudder whereit is damaged, making a mold shape for youto fill with an epoxy and filler mixture. Re-member to cut or file away any damagedglass or wood before you start.Sometimes You Need Professional Help

Though I had summer jobs working forboatbuilders and have done lots of smallrepairs, I am not good enough to get theoriginal shape and finish back on every re-pair. Eventually, even a well-taken-care-ofboard or rudder needs to be properly re-paired and repainted. When that happens,I send the blade back to Waterat (they havethe skills, the templates, and the painting

equipment). What returns a few weeks lateris absolutely indistinguishable from a newblade (see the section on how to make anew foil better).

I have a 12 year old centerboard that isas light, stiff and fast as a new one - it hasprobably been refinished two or three times.Centerboard and rudder repairs can taketime, but perfect foils give you better speedand pointing; critical to racing success.

HISTORY OF AMERICAN SECTION (EXCERPT FORM THE '64 505 HANDBOOK)

The superb performance of the "Coro-net" at LaBaule in 1953, and the immediatepopularity of the 505 in France and GreatBritain were not unobserved in the UnitedStates yachting circles. The first 505 im-ported into the United States was a gift toHenry Mercer Of Rumson, NJ, from MaxJohnson, who had the prototype "Coronet"built. (This boat, US23, is still in beautifulcondition and is actively races with Fleet2.)

At Mr. Mercer's kind invitation, EricOlsen, capably assisted by Glen Foster,sailed the 505 to a spectacular victory over26 other classes in Yachting Magazine'sthird One-of-a-Kind series in September,1954, at Riverside Yacht Club on Long Is-land Sound. Boat for boat, the 505 wasfourth, but finished first on corrected timewith a 3-2-2-1 record. This record is evenmore spectacular when one realizes thatneither the skipper nor crew saw the boatbefore the opening day of the series, andhad to rig her for racing on the spot, evenusing an old International 14 mainsail. Thewind varied from almost nothing to about20 knots, and the 505's outstanding perfor-mance under all conditions won almostunanimous admiration. Shortly thereafter,Geroge O'Day of Boston entered an agree-ment with Fairey-Marine and became thefirst commercial importer of the 505.

Any measure of success the 505 Classenjoys in the united States is directly at-tributable to the enthusiasm and efforts ofthe members during the early years. Oneof the first owners was Walter Bowden, whobecame acting Secretary of the yet unrec-ognized American Section.

The First North American Championshipwas sailed in December, 1957, at the SugarBowl Regatta in New Orleans. Dennis Posyof Scarsdale, NY, representing Massachu-setts Institute of Technology, won the se-ries, with Walter Bowden second and an-other Texan, Ralph Dorchester of Houston,third.

The American Section was officially or-ganized at the Sugar Bowl Regatta and Dr.William W. Schildecker of Daytona Beach,FL, was elected its first President. His run-ning mate, Walter Bowden became Secre-tary/Treasurer.

The next regional event was the 1958Southern Championship, held at Rockport,TX, in July. This series followed the an-nual Corpus Christi to Rockport long dis-tance race, in which the 505's shared thehonors with the Shearwater Catamarans.The Southern Championship was won byWalter Bowden. William Schildecker and

Ralph Dorchester finished second andthird, respectively.

The 1958 North American Championshipwas postponed until February 1959, whenit was sailed at the Coral Reef Yacht Club inMiami, FL, immediately proceeding Yacht-ing Magazine's fourth One-of-a-Kind se-ries. The largest yet, this Championshipattracted entries from California, Florida,Massachusetts, and Texas. Walter Bowdenwas the winner after a very hard fought fiveraces. Logan Goar of Houston, TX, was aclose second, and Mark Coholan of Bos-ton, MA, was third.

By winning the North American Champi-onship, Walter Bowden earned the right torepresent the 505 Class in the One-of-a-Kind series, and finished fifth overall in aforty boat fleet, being beaten by three cata-marans and a sailing canoe. Again, the 505demonstrated her versatile and reliable sail-ing capability, in spite of a capsize result-ing from a foul in one race, and a hope-lessly tangled spinnaker in another.

The second Annual Meeting of theAmerican Section was held a Miami in con-junction with the North American Champi-onship. A perpetual half-model trophy,symbolic of the North American Champi-onship was presented to the American Sec-tion by Dr. and Mrs. William W. Schildecker.

The 1959 North American Championshipwas held in Houston, TX, at the HoustonYacht Club in October. Logan Goar of thehost club took five consecutive first placesby virtue of his flawless off-wind sailing.Walter Bowden was second and BillSchildecker third.

During the winter of 1960, Fleet 2 of theAmerican Section was chartered on West-ern Long Island Sound, near New York City.Officers Logan Goar and Bill Schildeckeragreed it would be mutually advantageousfor both the American Section and thenewly formed fleet if the 1960 North Ameri-can Championship were held at LarchmontYacht Club on the Sound. The five raceseries was held during August and at-tracted participants from Florida, Texas,New York, and Connecticut. The windswere generally light, ranging from about 5to 15 mph. Henry Schefter, John Isbisterand John Marshall, all from the local fleet,finished first, second, and third, respec-tively.

At the Annual Meeting, fleet 2 presenteda perpetual trophy to the American Section.The trophy, a half model of the 505, isawarded to the winning yacht in the thirdcompleted race of each North American

Championship. George Moffat, an Interna-tional 14 sailor and Champion, had just re-turned from the 505 World Championshipat LaBaule, France, and spoke of the seriesand the European boats.

The first Inter-American Regatta washeld at Acapulco, Mexico, in April 1961.This series was created to cement the al-ready close bond between the Mexican andAmerican Sections, and is open to all skip-pers from both countries. The first Inter-American Champion was Walter Bowden,with Bill Sheppard second and BillSchildecker third.

The 1961 North American Championshipwas sailed at the Coconut Grove SailingClub on Biscayne Bay, Miami, FL. LoganGoar overcame an early lead by HankHornidge to win his second Championship.Ralph Dorchester finished second andHornidge was third.

Corpus Christi, TX, was the site of boththe Inter-American and North AmericanChampionships in August 1962. WalterBowden won his second Inter-Americantitle and Henry Schefter won his secondNorth American Championship.

At the Annual Meeting, the Secretary/Treasurer, John Isbister, announced that the1963 World Championship would be heldin the United States at Larchmont YachtClub during August. It was unanimouslydecided to postpone a bid by Fleet 3 forthe 1963 North Americans, and to hold thetwo series at Larchmont with the under-standing that the 1964 North AmericanChampionship would go to California.

In August 1963, some 55 505's from 7countries arrived at Larchmont Yacht Clubfor the series. There were 21 participantsin the North American Championship fromAustralia and Ireland, as well as California,Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, New York,and Texas. For a while, it appeared that the1963 Champion might be Bryan Price ofAustralia, but Henry Schefter won the thirdand final race, and won his third Champi-onship. He was followed by ChrisGasparich and Eric Olsen. Both Series aredescribed in a latter section.

At this writing, there are about 135 regis-tered boats in the United States, threeAmerican builders, and three importers ofEnglish and European 505's. Interest isparticularly high as an aftermath of 1963,and in anticipation of a possible selectionof the 505 as an Olympic Class in 1968 or1972. All in all, it appears the 505 is finallyearning its rightful place on the Americanyachting scene.

How TEAM SPOT Finally Won a 505 Re-gatta

The last twelve months will long be re-membered as the time when El Ninò raged,Monica ingested, the market bounced � andTEAM SPOT won the 1999 505 Midwinter�sChampionship. What happened? How didTEAM SPOT go from the champions ofmediocrity to the champs in St. Pete? Itwasn�t easy. It took a great deal of time,money and commitment. Here�s the storyof what worked for TEAM SPOT and why.Establish Your Own �Syndicate� and Makethe Commitment

I literally rediscovered sailing when Ibought my first 505 in 1995 - Waterat 5057772 purchased from Ali Meller. I took mynew boat to Kingston and raced at CORKwith Chris Gorton, a Canadian Albacoresailor I had known for several years. Whata disaster! We spent more time swimmingthan sailing. Neither Chris nor I had verymuch time sailing 505�s and even less timesailing the 505 with each other. Even ifyou�re an experienced sailor in anotherclass, don�t just expect to jump in the 505

and cruise to victory. There�s no substi-

tute for time in the boat, especially timespent with your crew or skipper.

I met Jesse Falsonein 1996 over E-mail.Jesse said he could be"pumped to do a pro-gram" and we set adate to sail together.The program soon pro-gressed, and we set agoal of sailing the 1998Worlds. I bought a newWaterat, 505 8643, inFebruary 1997. Thatfirst year we could usu-ally put together a goodfirst windward leg, butcould not hang for theentire race. If we didn�tcapsize, We wouldeventually get grounddown at the cornersand on the runs. Wehad chronic speedproblems despite thefact that we would setthe boat up on the 'num-bers'. The new boat didnot make the old driver& crew any faster,clearly indicating thatwe had a 'software'problem.

Speed and mechan-

ics problems don�t just fix themselves. Yes,a shiny new Waterat or Rondar will help ifyou�re currently sailing a 25 year old Parker.However, improvement doesn�t come with-out time, and time in the boat togetherdoesn�t come without making a consider-able commitment. Commitment is the mainingredient to improving your sailing abili-ties. Barney and Jesse are basically twohackers who made a sailing commitment.If we can do it, so can you!Pushing the Performance Envelope

We have spent countless hours sailingin all conditions. We have logged an esti-mated 60 capsizes. We have been stompedat every regatta we attended in the pro-cess. However, there were a few momentsof inspiration - the moments of revelationand epiphany. These times should be rec-ognized and recorded because they don�thappen often. When you�re 505 perfor-mance suddenly reaches new heights, takea good look around and figure out whatyou�re doing right so you can repeat it!

Upwind: One such magical moment wasat 1998 ECCs where we put up a brand newset of North sails and, for some reason, theboat went like a bat out of hell. Unfortu-nately we still went to one wrong mark,missed one start by 2 minutes, and droppeda spin sheet over the bow on one race.Another event was during Worlds: we werein 7th around the final leeward mark in a fresh-ening breeze - and were getting rolled byeveryone. Jesse literally kicked me fromthe wire saying, "find a new gear damn it!"After monkeying around we found a com-bination of settings that, in conjunctionwith putting the bow down, lit the boat upon an upwind plane. Remarkably, we heldour position in that race.

Reaching: The key was learning to man-age power and balance with board,cunningham, vang, and rake. We were threesail reaching in after a race in the 1997 NA�sat Long Beach in around 15 knots, and wereoverpowered. The main was ragging andthe chute was dragging the boat sideways.We had raised the board and yanked thecunningham a bit, but the boat wallowedunder the tremendous lee helm. Jesse sug-gested we rake a little. I dropped in 3 inchesof rake and pulled the shrouds on. The maintwisted off just like it does in response toraking while sailing upwind. All of a sud-den I HAD to pull the main in to keep Jesseout of the water. With the main full and therig shifted aft, the boat balanced perfectly -and it took off like a shot. What a revela-

tion! I felt as if someone had just scoopedthe shit out of my ears and peeled the ducttape away from my eyes. Another breakthrough was Bartz goggles (suggested byJesse). Like everyone, I have had chronic

difficulty seeing in the breeze. The Bartzgoggles solved this. All of a sudden, I had20/20 vision and did not have to rely on'The Force' or Jesse�s screamed admonitionsto guide us.

Gybing: Our now infamous problem wasthat we were trying to gybe a 505 with thesame technique in all conditions. I was steer-

ing with my knees while attempting to flythe chute with two hands in 30 kts. STOPLAUGHING! I was so desperate to knowthe secrets to heavy air gybing that I evenqueried the 505world email list in a now fa-mous thread entitled "How to Gybe a 505 -Barney Harris Comes Out of the Closet"(see web page). All that swimming taughtus! Now in high wind I simply wait for thecue (when the spin twings are pulled), grabthe new spin sheet, jam the helm, dive forthe new windward side, and DUCK - know-ing that Jesse will be pulling the boom over- and not taking "NO" for an answer.TEAM SPOT has not gone for a swim dueto a botched gybe since mid summer - areal time saver.

Running: Ethan Bixby was nice enoughto host a bunch of sailors at his houseMarch for a weekend practice session.Ethan said "Barn, you must learn to steerthe boat from the leeward rail downwind"(something Jesse had been saying allalong). Well, we worked at it while goingslow for what seemed like years - wait, itdid take years! But the many hours eventu-ally paid off. Now Jesse and I will simulta-

neously pumpthe chute andmain down asteep wave.Neat stuff. Threepumps per waveis the rule, and inmost conditionson the 505, youshould use allthree! When wefigured out thetiming involvedwith each of uspumping down-wind, wecouldn�t stop -like a couple of13 year olds whohad just learnedhow to mastur-bate.

Enjoy It: It iseasy to have fundoing anythingwhen you win -that�s like shoot-ing fish in a bar-rel. It takes aspecial gift to re-ally enjoy get-ting hammered all

the time. The mood on board the "TossedSalad" [TEAM SPOT 505 8643] is one ofconstant humor. Sometimes I am laughingso hard I mess things up; drop the tiller orsomething. When we do screw up, we tryto figure out why and how to prevent it inthe future - but do not dwell on it muchbeyond that. When we do well, we tell eachother 'good race' and analyze what we didright and wrong and where, and how ourcompetition screwed up so badly that they

were vanquished by TEAM SPOT!Spend the Money: TEAM SPOT realizes

that we can not compete unless we havehardware parity - so we shell out the $$until we have only ourselves to blame. 505sailing is expensive, right? WRONG! In thegrand scheme of things, sailing any din-ghy is an order of magnitude less expen-sive than a lot of things like, say, a Mumm30 or 1D35, a helicopter, an airplane, a racecar, or a wife and two kids!

The Basics: We try to do the big thingscorrectly. Nail the start and the first shiftand the last shift before the mark. Whenwe get to the windward mark, pull up thechute and DON�T CAPSIZE. Don�t dumpat the gybe. Don�t get the spinnaker sheetover the bow at the leeward mark. Keep alane of clear air. Stay on the lifted tack -and keep your finger on the 'GO' button.

Burning Desire: This is what motivatesus to travel all over the country (good beerand friends help also). Hey - both Jesseand I have it. We eat sleep and drink din-ghy racing in general - and 505s in particu-lar. I wake up looking at the wind outside,think about how to improve the controlsand systems on the boat as I drive to work,and dream about gybing without capsizingin bed every night. Its on our minds all thetime. We are hooked and there is nothingeither of us can do about it. What a greataddiction!Barney Harris, edited for clarity by Jesse

FLEET UPDATES

As the Broncos are charging into anotherSuperbowl, the Colorado 505 fleet is reach-ing into 1999 with our annual fleet AGM/Superbowl party.

Just like the past two years, Gary andGina Scott will be crowned as Fleet Cham-pions, but this year the victory is bitter-sweet. The Scotts, a fleet mainstay and themark all other Denver 505 teams are judgedagainst, will be departing for sunny Cali-fornia in the spring. Their contributions tothe fleet are to numerous to list, and theywill be missed for many seasons to come.We hope they will still come to play once ina while.

We are also losing veteran crew DickHamilton to a warmer and sunnier climate.Hamilton, long time crew for Dick Peck, hasmore than 30 years experience in the 505and has also been a mainstay of the Colo-rado fleet.

Though we have not yet finalized a re-gatta schedule, we are looking forward toperennial favorites Dillon Open and Ne-braska Governor�s Cup. In 1999 we will havea coaching weekend at Lake McConaughy,and we will organize the Timberline Regatta,a regional dinghy regatta. The Timberlineis a great way for our fleet to draw somepositive attention from the Colorado sail-ing community.

Recently Dick Peck launched a fleet armsrace with his purchase of Lindsay 7318,�Dump Truck,� from Peter Alarie. �DumpTruck,� took 4th at the recent Worlds withcountless other major event top 10 finishesdating back to 1981, including 9th at the�95 Worlds, 1st in the �97 Mid Winters andNorth Americans. Peter Alarie has done anamazing job rebuilding this boat, includingits transom, which we are likely to see a lotof this year.

Stories, rigging tips and sailing advicewere exchanged over pizza and beer whenAli Meller and Jef Arnold came to Denverfor a conference. Eighteen people, bothcurrent and potential 505 sailors, came outof the woodwork to join them for dinner atlocal hangout Old Chicago. Everyone whoattended had a wonderful evening and weall learned a little too.

Following fleet 36�s growth over the lastthree years, we will likely be adding twonew teams to the fleet this season, andpossibly a few new crews.

1999 will be an exciting year for the Colo-rado fleet as we continue grow and attracttop sailors from the area. Newer and fasterequipment, coaching sessions, and experi-ence in the recent Pre-Worlds and Worlds,

is helping the fleet as a whole get fasterand better.

Here�s the story in the NorthwestWe had 7 5o�s out in January!!!!! Yes,

it�s true. 7 boats made it out to Lake UnionSaturday for our winter sail and fleet meet-ing.

After a delay by the Oak Harbor crowd(flat tire). We were under way to enjoy theswirling winds of the lake. Some places wesat and 100 yds later the lighter crews weretrapped out, not for long but they were stillon the wire. Saturday was an excuse to getout on the water and sail with our friends,some of which we met that morning. Therewas only one VERY informal gate startwhere we sailed down to the south end ofthe lake and back, the rest of the time wasspent just enjoying the acceleration of the5o5. The rain held off until we all wereready to head to Paul and RebeccaShipley�s for a tasty pasta dinner.

Our future plans as a fleet were discussedand the 99 schedule created. We have de-cided not to put a focus on a final regionalregatta at the end of the season. It was de-cided to put together a series with the over-all winner being 1st in the region. Since wetend to swap crews a lot, the boat that at-tends and comes out ahead in the serieswill be our champion. So set your calen-dars now. The Seattle One-design Center-board Keelboat Series (SOCKs) is going tobe our be our big focus this year. It is thebiggest regatta in the area, lots of expo-sure.

We have done a lot of boat trading thisyear, so we are expecting to see many newfaces at our regattas. Again our focus willbe on the fun of the 5o5 and getting newfolks a ride. We are always looking for newcrew.

Region I NewsWhile, many of the steadfast regulars will

be returning for another competitive sea-son, Region I will be sporting some newfaces, as several boats have alreadychanged hands in the off season.

Nick Trotman and Mike Mills have sold'The Green Room', 8610, to local (Hyannis)collegiate sailors W. Mason and EricKnight, the two will sail throughout thewinter in Charleston, SC before returningto Hyannis for the summer. The defendingWorld and North American champs havepromised a return, but not likely for a coupleseasons while Nick is attending Graduateschool. Bristol legends, Pete Alarie andMike Zani have sold the famed'Dumptruck', 7318, to Richard Peck in Colo-rado. No current plans have been an-nounced to replace her, as the two havepurchased A-Class catamarans, however,cameo appearances at major 505 champi-onships has not been ruled out. RecentURI Graduate, Ted Marvel has bought 8240,from Chris Musler. Ted lives and works inNewport, RI, and plans to sail in all localevents. The Long Island fleet is going toget a jumpstart with the addition of 8645,Dave Anderson and Fred Liesegang havepurchased the boat from Jim Englert. Thetwo have plans of starting a fleet and pos-sibly hosting a regatta sometime this sum-mer on the Island.

With most of 1999 Region I regatta datesset (see 1999 Calendar), I am pleased toannounce the return of the New EnglandChampionships. The annual event hasbeen re-instated thanks to the donation ofthe perpetual trophy by Tom Kivney. Theinaugural event will take place July 17-18thon Buzzards Bay, hosted by the NewBedford Yacht Club and organized by NeilFowler, an event not to be missed. Theregatta will serve as the regions� champi-onship and should attract top talent fromregions throughout North America and be-yond. In 1999 the Region will be focusingon increasing participation at local regat-tas for local fleet building and supportingthe North American, East Coast, and East-ern Canadian Championships. In addition,several possible clinic dates featuringWorld Champ & Class VP Mike Mills havebeen discussed and will be announcedshortly.

Updates from the Midwest1998 was a good year for the Midwest

505�s. Fleet activity was at a high with alarge number of regatta�s during the year.This was the first year this sailor can re-member where we had to pass on both theSummer and Fall Sandusky Open Regattadue to conflicts. We saw a new 505 sailingVenue on Lake St. Clair, SouthPort SailingClub in Windsor, used for both a trainingRegatta and the MidWest championship.Fleets were revived in Chicago and Indi-ana. Detroit, Wisconsin, and Northern Ohiosaw renewed activity while neighboringstates supported a scattering of sailors.

At least four superboats joined the re-gion, two recent Rondars and twoWaterrats. The Parkers they replacedstayed in the region and went to new fleetmembers as starter boats. This influx ofboats increased both the level of racing andthe number of racers.

Four racers from the region went toworlds and had a great time. They cameback with lots of experience and tips for

those of us that stayed home. The silly partis that three of the four finished in a clump.The three boats that have mixed it up foryears on the small and great lakes finishedright next to each other after throwing in anadditional 100+ boats for diversion. Go fig-ure. Ki Kaiser, Graham Alexander, and DaveStetson ended up 89, 90, and 91 respec-tively while the Gesings ended up 82th.

We are all looking forward to 1999 andadditional increased activity.

Drove down with Dennis Burroughs... atleast it wasn�t driving alone.

Saturday - Great to be here! Hello tofriends, including Simon Lake and MartinWedge from the UK. No breeze. Finewith me. Great to be here.

Sunday - no wind in the morning. Alldressed up and no place to go. Head intotown for lunch and almost miss the firstrace. Three races in light to medium. Nonplaning upwind, marginal trapezing.

Harris/Falsone are beating up on therest. Meller/Burroughs lead at oneweather mark, but have not got the team-work down to the point that Burroughscomes into the boat as they bear off.Nearly dump to windward. Ouch!

Top three fighting it out in every race,except Meller/Burroughs break top threeonce, beating Nelson/Alarie.

Sunday - more breeze. Fantastic! Fourraces? Great job Pat!

Same top three fighting it out, withMeller/Burroughs in the hunt at the firstmark, but then going backwards at the cor-ners. Desparate battles between the firstthree, and then the next three for positions.Crash tacking on the line, etc. Tail enddumping.

Guys who bought Trotman/Mills boatknow how to win a pin end start, but nothow to change gears.

When its over, Harris/Falsone with their

first significant victory in the 505 class.Nelson/Alarie 2nd, Bixby/Ikle close behindin 3rd. Big spread to Meller/Burroughs in4th, just one point ahead of the tie for 5thbetween de la Rie/Freedman andMontague/Cheney.

Great to see Dave Anderson and FredLiesagang in the Waterat they bought fromJim Englert. A real success story for the505 class. We met Fred and Dave at

SailEXPO three years ago. They are work-ing to start a fleet on Long Island, and arebringing other people into the class.

Once again SPYC does an outstanding

job with this event. I just love the foodwhile de-rigging.

Too bad about the dates this year andnext, I think closer to New Year�s, or evenbetween Christmas and New Year�s mightwork better.

One of these years we�re gonna have torun a 505 Worlds in Florida around Christ-mas time.. someplace warm and windy....

RYC Midwinters Race Day #1, Dec. 6th,1998

Last weekend 10 brave boats showed upat RYC after a severe storm beat NorthernCalifornia on Saturday night. They weregreeted with a crystal clear sunny day andwinds that started great and dimished dur-ing the day. Thad and Mystery Man SteveBartz teamed up in Steve�s Pristine USA8554 and took the win. Eric "Woody" Willisand Wendy were a close second and wererumored to have really deserved the winbut Eric hit a tree, smashed up his face,and ended up second for the day. But thatsanother story.

The best part of the whole weekend wasall the NEW fleet members that made it outand some faces we haven�t seen in a while.WELCOME or WELCOME BACK to all ofyou who made it out on Sunday.

RYC Midwinter #2 Results

While Bruce Edwards and Dave Sheltonwere home sleeping (and it was a great slum-ber I might add....Ed) , Sunday began witha strong gusty easterly that eventuallysettled down to roughly 6-10 knots fromthe NE. All of the races were sailed in nicesunny conditions ranging from skipper andcrew on the tank to fully powered upwindtrapezing. (for us light people) The firstrace was led primarily by Doug Hagan andKirk Wilson and closely followed by CraigCollins and Ken Richards. However, thefinish went to Eric and Wendy by picking

up some breeze on the left on the last beat.The second race was marked by a very tightpack at the windward mark with DavidByron and Peter rounding first. Craig "I�mgoing to luff you all the way to Stockton"Perez and Ed Neuman were last seen at thejibe mark and rumor had it that Craig wasattempting to luff a container ship for steal-ing his wind. The last two races were wonby David and Peter by sailing very fast atdeep angles downwind. Reese Jones andTim Boschert also made a strong first show-ing in their all wood Kyrwood/Benedict.The conditions were perfect Northern Cali-fornia midwinter sailing with not a cloud inthe sky.

SoCal Midwinter's

We had a light turnout for the 1999 south-ern California mid-winters mainly becausenone of the Northern California flakesshowed up. It was their loss though. Wehad perfect conditions. Sunny, warm andvariety of conditions. The Racing in theharbour on Saturday was in light windthrough the later part of the third race whenthe breeze picked up for the run home. Sun-day started much the same around noon.After the first race however, the windpicked up to ~15 knots from the S SW andwe were able to get two more good races inrounding out the weekend with a total ofsix. Theracing wasgood withthe leadc h a n g i n gin almostevery race.Mike andH o w a r d

gave their new waterat a good christeningby winning the first and second race. Inthe next two races Andy Zinn and DannyThompson came on strong to win and takethe lead. The last two races The wind kickedin and Mike and Howard were able to usetheir downwind speed to win the races andtake the regatta. After sailing Danny Th-ompson was explaining his theory that theNorthern California Boats don�t like to comedown because they are afraid that all of theSouthern California boats will beat them.Furthermore, he challenges any NorthernCalifornia boat to come to the Hi-Per re-gatta, April 10,11 and is willing to bet freebeer to any Northern California boat thatcan beat any Southern California boat.
