Jimmy Williams, from our DFW CSC, was honored as the “Recruit of the Year” during the Annual Awards Banquet. Joining our team last January, Jimmy has proved to be very dedicated and has an excellent knowledge of the trucking industry. Jimmy chooses to be safe each day by making sure his equipment is in good mechanical condition. He is always aware of those working and driving around him and focuses on staying with his routine in each day’s deliveries. “I enjoy it here at UPT mainly because of the great group of drivers,” said Williams. He and his wife Faye have been married 28 years and have four children, and 8 grandchildren.

Webster’sdefinescommunicationas“aprocessbywhich information isexchangedbetween individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behaviors.” Tony Robbins, self-help author and motivational speaker says, “To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others.” My wife and kids claim I am not the world’s best communicator. Based on the long list of examples they provided me, they may be correct. I do however understand that when it comes to communication, there is always room for improvement. During eachNewDriverOrientation(NDO),Ifocusprimarilyontwotopics:safetyfirst, thencommunication. More often than not, the daily issues I get involved with have more to do with miscommunication or a lack of information than actual transportation issues.
The point I emphasize is in order to really communicate, people have to share information with someone else – we cannot assume that anyone knows what we feel or that there is a problem unless we have actually told them what that problem is. That said, telling anyone to “communicate better” is a little like telling people to run faster or jump higher. Sounds good, but what does it mean? The trick, I think, is to provide options that will hopefully lead to easier sharing of info. Today there is no shortage of technology designed to improve communication. I am somewhat skeptical that all of the available solutions actually improve communication; I am more inclined to believe too often they only increase the speed at which we miscommunicate. So my question is, “how can we better utilize all the tools to improve understanding?” I believe the answer lies somewhere in the middle based on availability and preference. In addition to current communication tools, such as our weekly eNewsletters and Tank Talk, we have recently begun exploring several new tools, including Twitter and Facebook. We are also in the process of developing a professional driver website to share info we think is important, interesting, or maybe just fun. All of these efforts are aimed at developing a more effective means of exchanging information. We all have different ways of looking at things and we all have our way of sharing our viewpoint. I am encouraging each of you to take advantage of the method you prefer to help us better understand your ideas and concerns. I am notpromisingwewillagreeoneverythingorthatwewillfixeverything–Iamonlypromisingyouwewilllistenandtry. And that, by the way, is what I am asking you to do as well. More to come on the new tools….Thanks for your commitment to getting home safely every day.
You may have noticed a different logo on the front page of this edition of Tank Talk. It has also slowly been appearing on other companymaterial. Weareexcitedtofinallyshare with you our new UPT logo. For more than three decades we have run under a dual logo brand. These served a critical purpose throughout the years, but recently we determined it was time for a change. We will now simply be known to our internal and external customers, vendors and friends as United Petroleum Transports or UPT. This is not to say we are dismissing or forgetting our past. We pay homage and respect to our forty-six year history by including ‘An OTL Legacy Company’ in our new brand. As you might imagine, a transition like this will take some time. Over the coming months we will focus on switching our truck door decals, our professional driver uniforms, and updating the company store with new hats, shirts,
and other merchandise. Along with this updated logo, we have formed a Branding Committee which will ensure our brand identity remains consistent and always represents the vision and mission of the Price Family.

MaintenanceWhere oh where has my little part gone?
UPT has made a change in the management of our physical shop data systems. In the past, it was not unusual for parts purchases to be managed with the purchasing processes andnotbyphysicalinventory.UPTfinishedthefirstquarterof 2012bypurchasingover$938,000 in parts, tires, and supplies used to maintain our equipment. We have outgrown the use of purchasing processes to control these expenses.
Over the next few months UPT will be installing a direct and very structured system of inventory and purchasing management. Parts purchased for use in our shops will be required to have an inventory structure behind the scenes. Barcoding will be required for every part purchased and “running” through our maintenance system. I like to think of this process as the Wal-Mart method. Parts are managed from a
central location, just like a distribution center. Use is tracked by barcode through our internal repair order system and orders will be placed to replenish items based on usage. Regular stock counts will be conducted at the CSC locations. Basically, justlikeanyretailstore,UPTwillnowspecificallymanagetheirpurchases.Implementationtothefieldlocationswilltakesometime, butwebelievethisisourbestcourseof actiontocombattheescalationincostsand to maintain good maintenance practices.

A heart attack is a frightening event, and you probably don't want to think about it. But, if you learn the signs of a heart attack and what steps to take, you can save a life–maybe your own. What are the signs of a heart attack? Many people think a heart attack is sudden and intense, like a "movie" heart attack, where a person clutches his or her chest and falls over. The truth is that many heart attacks start slowly, as a mild pain or discomfort. If you feel such a symptom, you may not be sure what's wrong. Your symptoms may even come and go. Even those who have had a heart attack may not recognize their symptoms, because the next attack can have entirely different ones. Women may not think they're at risk of having a heart attack–but they are. It's vital that everyone learn the warning signs of a heart attack. These are: Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. Shortness of breath. Often comes along with chest discomfort. But it also can occur before chest discomfort. Other symptoms. May include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or light-headedness.Learn the signs–but also remember: Even if you're not sure it's a heart attack, you should still have it checked out. Fast action can save lives-maybe your own.

To be named one of thetop12driversinafleetof 600+driversisexceptional.We extend our gratitude and appreciation to the 2011 Professional Driver Nominees; Larry Dixon (Houston), Bill Evans (DFW), Tommy Johnson (Odessa), Anthony Jones (Phoenix), Doug Million (Wichita), Ed Norman (San Antonio), Ruben Perez (DFW), Harvie Pinkerton (Tulsa), Kenneth Pitts (Houston), Ronald Shults (Odessa), Paul Starnes (Shreveport) and Brad Whitaker (Odessa). By honoring those with integrity, we encourage all our professional drivers to perform to the best of their ability.
This is our third year to present the “Technician of the Year” award and it was with great pleasure to present it to David Byerly of Shreveport. David has been a maintenance professional for 32 years. The early days of his
career began at the age of 10, working in his dad’s shop. He enjoys what he does because “the truck industry and maintenance has always been interesting” to him. He and wife Sandra enjoy their two children and two grandchildren.

From: Tom Ramsour Date: February 21, 2012 To: United Petroleum TransportsSubject: Steve Young
I know in this business it is a continual battle to findqualifiedpeople that arededicatednotonly to thecompany they work for but also to the customers they serve. You have one outstanding individual in Steve Young. He has been nothing but an asset to the workings of DelekRefining. It ismostunusual tofindapersonthat works as hard for his customer as he does for the company paying his salary. On Monday, I was in need of additional equipment to meet an obligation to a Delek customer. Steve did not back up at any point in time to say “well maybe”. All he wanted to know was what the load number is and how soon he could start loading. With his assistance Delek was able to meet the obligation. Please pass on a very special Thank You to Steve from Delek. A job very well done. Tom RamsourDelekRefining,LTD
