    4.2. Hydraulic system

All operations of the TANA machine are based on hydraulics. The hydraulic system isdivided into two separate systems. They function independently of each other. The systemshave a common oil tank, return oil filter, and oil cooler.

    4.3. Brake system

Service brakeThe driving hydraulics serves as the machines service brake. When the machine isstopped, the parking brake is automatically activated. Service brake consists of twoseparate brake circuit systems.

Parking brakeThe parking brake is activated automatically when the transmission switch is off. The

parking brake is released immediately when the transmission switch is turned to the ONposition. In addition, the parking brake is activated automatically when the engine isstopped.

    Drive hydraulics (A)

The pumps for the drive hydraulics (2 pcs)are mounted on the diesel engine. Thepumps produce oil flow and run thehydraulic motors coupled to final drivesbolted to the end of the compaction drums. The final drives serve to drive thecompaction drums.

    Hydraulic pumps (1 and 2)

Note! The number of final drives variesbetween compactor models:

4.4. Electric control and monitor system

The TANA landfill compactor is equipped with a decentralised total control system, whichcontrols the diesel engine, hydrostatic transmission, steering, and dozer blade hydraulics,as well as their auxiliary functions. The system consists of three independent modules,

each of which controls different functions of the machine. In addition, the diesel engine hasits own control unit, which forms part of the total control system. The modules areinterconnected via a CAN bus (ControllerArea Network), which is a fast and interference-resistant data transmission bus.

The different functions of the machine have been divided among the modules as follows:

    1. Display module

This serves as the drivers user interface; i.e. it displays the gauge functions. In addition, the display helps one inspect the fault memory of the machine, and change and savethe settings of the machine. The last function requires entering a separate password.

    2. Cabin module

This module incorporates features such as cabin control switches, control levers, etc.

    3. Chassis module

The chassis module controls the hydrostatic transmission and the steering and dozerblade hydraulics; it also serves as the interface for connecting sensors and switches inthe engine compartment.

    4. Electronic engine control unit

The controls unit independently controls the operation of the diesel engine and transfersdata from the engines own sensors to the other control systems of the machine.

    Main display

    1. Transmission ON/OFF switch and parking brake status

The symbol is displayed when the transmission switch is off.

When the transmission switch is off and the engine is running, the control system keepsthe parking applied. When the transmission switch is turned to the ON position while theengine is running, the parking brake is released and the symbol disappears (with delay).

The drive system is controlled by a pressure switch. The switch does not allow drivingthe machine before the pressure in the drive system is sufficiently high, that is when the

parking brake symbol disappears. If the driver turns the driving lever while the symbol isdisplayed, the machine will not move. Even if the symbol disappears when the lever isturned, the machine will not move before the lever is turned back to the central positionand then to the drive position again.

If the pressure drops below the limit value, the machine will not move before the leversare turned back to the central position. After that driving can continue. If the pressureswitch is out of pressure, i.e. the pressure is below the limit value (18 bar) for 10seconds, the control system sets off an alarm.

The altitude information provided by the GPS system (optional) is displayed when theparking brake is not engaged. The reading indicates the altitude from the zero point set.

    2. TTC (Tana Traction Control) (optional)

TTC (optional) is an anti-slip system that tries to prevent the slipping of the drums(skidding). The TTC system reduces the wear of the drums and fuel consumption andmakes driving easier.

The TTC is activated with switch S2 on the switch panel. When the TTC is activated, theTTC symbol is shown in the display. When the anti-slip system intervenes in the controlof the drums or dozer blade, the symbol flashes. When the TTC is activated and one orboth drums slip, the TTC tries to adjust the control of the drums so that the slippingstops. If adjusting the control does not work, the dozer blade is raised in order to stop

the slipping of the drums (skidding).

    3. Speed range selector switch status

    Indicates the selected driving speed:

    tortoise = work speed,

    hare = transport speed.

The driving speed range can also be changed while the machine is moving.

    4. Engine speed

The engine must not be raced over 2,400 rpm, and the idle running speed must be over800 rpm at all times.

NOTE! If the engine speed exceeds 2,400 rpm, the engine control unit will set off analarm. Stop the engine immediately and find out the cause of the malfunction. TheCaterpillar engine stops automatically if the engine speed is over 2,800 rpm. Ifnecessary, contact an authorised Cummins/Caterpillar service representative.

    5. Operating hours

Registers the number of operating hours of the engine.

    6. Charging current

Indicates the charging voltage. When the batteries are fully charged and the ignition is

switched on, the voltage is about 2425 V. When the engine is running, the voltageshould be 2728 V. If the voltage drops, check the alternator belts.

The control system triggers an alarm and restricts machine functions in the followingcases:

The voltage is below 22 V over 5 seconds while the engine is running: Thespeed of the engine is limited to 1,200 rpm.

The voltage is above 29.5 V over 2 seconds while the engine is running:The control system will set off an alarm.

The voltage is above 30 V over 2 seconds while the engine is running: The

control system will stop the engine.

    7. Engine oil temperature (TANA Gx320 and Gx380)

Indicates the temperature of the engine oil. The range displayed is +20 C to +120 C.

NOTE! If the oil temperature exceeds +122 C (252 F), the engine's own control unitwill start to reduce the amount of fuel injected and hence cut 30% from the maximumtorque of the engine. Should this happen, stop the engine immediately and find thecause of the malfunction. If necessary, contact an authorised Cummins service.

    8. Hydraulic oil temperature

Indicates the temperature of the hydraulic system. The green scale displays +20 Cthrough +85 C.

The control system issues an alarm and restricts machine functions in the followingcases:

Oil temperature below -30 C: The speed of the engine is limited to1,000 rpm, slow driving speed range.

Oil temperature below -20 C: The speed of the engine is limited to1,200 rpm, slow driving speed range.

Oil temperature below 0 C: The speed of the engine is limited to1,400 rpm, slow driving speed range.

Oil temperature below +20 C: The speed of the engine is limited to2,000 rpm, slow driving speed range.

Oil temperature over +85 C: The speed of the engine is not limited, slow

driving speed range available. Oil temperature over +90 C: The output of the driving pumps (machine

    speed) is reduced to 75%.

Oil temperature over +95 C: The output of the driving pumps (machinespeed) is reduced to 50%.

In all the aforementioned cases, the alarm information (an alarm buzzer sounds and thered alarm light is lit) supplied by the control system is saved in the fault memory. Thisdata can be checked on the alarm display.

    9. Engine coolant temperature

Indicates the temperature of the engine coolant. The green scale is +60 C...+105 C.

If the coolant temperature rises too high, stop driving and leave the machine to idle for afew minutes, which will cause the temperature to drop. Stop the engine and look for thereason for the overheating - for example, a dirty radiator or too low a coolant level. Donot continue working until the fault is rectified. Moreover, do not run the enginecontinuously if the coolant temperature remains below +60 C since this can damagethe engine.

The Caterpillar engine shows an alarm if the coolant temperature rises over +110 C(230 F) for 10 seconds.

If the coolant temperature exceeds +102 C (215 F) (Cummins) / +111 C (231 F)(Caterpillar), the engine's own control unit will start to reduce the amount of fuel injected

and hence cut the maximum torque of the engine by 30%. Should this happen, stop theengine immediately and find the cause of the malfunction. If necessary, contact anauthorised Cummins/Caterpillar service.

    10.Amount of fuel

Check that there is enough fuel for the days operations. The range displayed is 10%100%. The control system will set off an alarm if the fuel level in the tank drops below10% of the tank volume. The filling capacity is about 760 litres. The filler pipe is locatedon the left-hand side behind the cabin.

After stopping the engine, do not open the radiator cap before thecoolant has cooled down! Engine coolant is hot and pressurised afteroperation. The steam released from the radiator can cause seriousburns.

    5.7. Control levers

    Driving lever, left

When the lever is in the extreme position, the engine runs at the maximum speed and themachine moves at the maximum speed. When the lever is moved back toward the centralposition, the machine stops; i.e. it also acts as a service brake. When the lever is movedbackward from the central position, the operations are exactly the same but the machinemoves backwards.

When one is driving at the maximum speed, the engine speed is, depending on the load, between 1,900 and 2,200 rpm. The pumps feature automatic power control, which reducesthe machines speed when the load increases.

When the driving lever isin the central position, theengine is idling. Whenthe lever is movedforward, the enginespeed starts to increase

and simultaneously thecontrol flow of the pumpsfor the driving hydraulicsis activated and themachine starts to moveforward.

The driving lever only acts as a thrott le lever when the powertransmission switch is in the OFF position.

Do not use the transmission switch unless the driving lever is thecentral position and the engine is idling.

    Steering lever, right

When the lever is turned to the left, the machine turns to the left. When the lever is turned tothe right, the machine turns to the right. When the lever is returned to the central position, the steering angle of the machine remains the same. The machine is set straight by turningthe lever to the opposite direction.

When the lever is pulled backward, the dozer blade is lifted. When the lever is pushedforward, the dozer blade is lowered. The bucket section of the dozer blade is lifted andlowered by pressing the upper and lower part of the switch, respectively.

The turning angle of the machine is restricted by rubber cushioning mounted on the edgesof the service platform. Avoid unnecessary application of force to these rubbers. Thesteering of the machine is also cushioned with the help of inductive sensor, which cut thesteering movement just before it reaches the extreme position. The inductive sensor givethe cut-off data to the steering system, which in this case returns the directional controlvalve almost to the neutral position.

The machine is steeredand the dozer blade liftedand lowered with thislever. The dozer bladebucket (optional) iscontrolled with the switchon the lever.

Avoid turning the machine when the machine is s tanding st il l. Turningwill unnecessarily load steering cylinders and the articulation link.

Lower the dozer blade fully before stopping the engine.

The drum teeth (1) and scrapers (2) are subjected to heavy loads. A daily inspection is animportant part of preventive maintenance.

If a scraper is bent, straighten it with a hydraulic press. A bent scraper cancause damage to the drum when hitting the crushing teeth.

Remove any wire ropes and cables from around the drum and from thedrum ends.

Avoid driving over wire ropes and cables. Push them to a suitable spot withthe dozer blade and cover with other refuse before driving over them.

If damage in the drum is detected, inform the maintenance personnelimmediately.

The end plates of the drum prevent wire ropes from getting between the drum end and theframe. The adjustable cable cutters also prevent the cables from getting to the end of thedrum, especially when the drum teeth are new. New teeth can have edges to which cablesbecome stuck easily.

Use correctly shaped, original wearing pieces for repairing the teeth. By doing this, youreduce damage to the drum or frame. A wear piece for the foot that is too big or of thewrong shape easily collects cables, stones, etc. and can thus cause, for example, damageto the scrapers, the intrusion of cables between the drum and the frame, or even ruptures inthe drum shell.

    11. Check the scrapers, cable cutters, and drums

    Adjusting the scrapers

The scrapers and wire cutters, which areagainst the end plate of the drum, can beadjusted by loosening their retaining bolts.

Adjust the scrapers when their distance tothe drum shell exceeds 25 mm. Adjust the

scrapers to about a 10 mm distance fromthe shell. Rotate the drum slowly and re-adjust the scrapers if they touch the drumshell.NOTE! The drum shell is not completelyround!

The distance between the cable cuttersand the drum end plate should be about3 mm.
