Welcome to Tamworth High School Tamworth High School is Tamworth’s original high school, and has been providing quality teaching and learning opportunities in a caring and committed environment since 1919. We maintain strong traditions in academic, cultural and sporting pursuits, as well as in student leadership and community participation. Strong relationships have been forged with many families in the area, over a number of generations. While believing in tradition we are also a school that actively prepares our students for life in the 21st Century. Students have access to an extensive computer network and teachers and students regularly use interactive whiteboards to engage in teaching and learning. We also pride ourselves on maintaining a welfare team that is committed to supporting all students in all endeavours. In all that we do, the interests and wellbeing of our students are our first priority. Tamworth High School operates on a “Stage” model to develop a modern, relevant and inclusive curriculum, and has a highly successful Support unit that caters for students with special needs. Our Gifted and Talented program caters to a wide variety of students from not only our school but our local primary schools, in such areas as Music, English, Maths, Science and Visual Arts. Through our accelerated learning program we have forged enduring links with our partner primary schools, which results in students regularly sitting High School Certificate subjects early. The opening of the multi-million dollar Trade Training Centre in 2012 provides new state-of-the-art training facilities for vocational courses. We foster an atmosphere of excellence and maintain the high expectation that our students are Safe, Respectful Learners. Students participate in highly successful leadership programs such as the Prefects/Captains, the Student Representative Council, Interact and the Junior AECG. These opportunities are available to all who choose to participate fully in the life that Tamworth High School has to offer.

“Tamworth High School is a caring community that promotes safe respectful learning.”

Positive Behaviour for Leaning is a whole school organisational approach to ensuring that all students have maximum opportunity to develop social confidence and academic excellence. It is about making sure that EVERYONE in the school community knows and understands the same set of expectations about learning and behaviour. It is about shared understanding of what our school stands for. In PBL schools we teach social skills and expectations in exactly the same way as we teach literacy, numeracy and physical education. EVERYONE is taught what our expectations are so no-one is left to guess what they have to do.

What is PBL?

What is the PBL Team? Our school has a PBL Team who lead us in making sure that we are developing and learning our shared expectations. The PBL Team represents everyone who is part of our school community. They are our voice and ears. They communicate with us and ask our opinions. Sometimes decisions seem to take a while to make, but that is because our PBL Team needs to consult with the community to make sure that our school is the best place that it can be.

EVERYONE IN OUR SCHOOL SHOULD

KNOW THEIR REPRESENTATIVE ON

THE PBL TEAM.

Tamworth High School has a matrix of expectations that ensures that everyone in the school community knows and understands what is expected in the school. Our merit system is designed to encourage students to be SAFE RESPECTFUL LEARNERS in all aspects of school life. Our school has a wide range of systems and programs to support students in all aspects of school and community life. These systems are developed and chosen in response to the needs of the students and the community.

Why does it work? PBL provides structures and strategies to explicitly achieve the things we want to achieve in our schools – Social confidence and

WE BELIEVE IN Shared expectations. Explicit teaching and learning of behavioural and learning expectations. Shared language.

It is imperative that the school be contacted either by note or a telephone call (phone 6765 7888 or 6762 2432) if you change your address, telephone number or any emergency contact details at any time during your child’s stay at Tamworth High School.

This will alleviate any problems when we need to contact you especially if your child is sick or there is an emergency.

E M E R G E N C Y & H O M E D E T A I L S

If you are organising a family holiday during school terms or you know your child is having an operation or ongoing sickness, an exemption from schooling may be applied for, which also covers siblings, this means that the time away from school does not count towards your child’s absences. An Exemption from Attendance at School form is available from the school, an application may only be approved beforehand and cannot be backdated.

On occasions your child may need to leave school early eg for an appointment. Please provide your child with a signed, dated note stating the reason and time required for the early leave. This note needs to be given to the staff in SAO PRIOR to roll call. An early leave pass will be processed and available for your child to collect in the first recess break. This ensures their name is listed on the absentee sheet for the day with the time of departure, and that they are waiting to be picked up at the appointed time.

E A R L Y L E A V E P A S S E S

If you are willing for your child to be photographed, filmed, named or interviewed on topics that do not involve current issues or do not offer a personal insight, consent will be automatic for the following: The Northern Daily Leader, Times Newspaper, Tamworth High School Newsletter, Tamworth High School Annual Magazine, 2TM Radio, ABC Television and Radio, Local Community Radio, Prime Television, NBN Television and the World Wide Webb (Tamworth High School’s newsletter is posted on the internet fortnightly) and Department of Education & Communities Newsletters. If you do not wish for this to happen, please contact the school on 6765 7888 and records will be changed accordingly.

M E D I A P E R M I S S I O N

If students need to take prescribed medication during school hours, parents are required to complete Medication Forms, available from the Front Office, this form is required for each new medication, including a change to generic brands.

The prescribed medication is to be brought to the Front Office in the original container with the medical details and name on the label. Please only bring enough medication to last for either the duration of the illness or each week. Your child is responsible to come down to the front office at the required time, they are also required to sign a record card each time medication is taken.

M E D I C A T I O N

C L I N I C

Students should let their class teacher know if they are unwell and they will be given a note to take to the Front Office, where parents/carers will be contacted to pick them up. If a student is unwell at home, please do not send them to school.

Students should not phone parents to pick them up (please refer to the Mobile Phone Policy towards the back of this handbook).

If any new medical conditions are diagnosed eg asthma, epilepsy, heart condition, diabetes etc, the school needs to have written notification from the treating Doctor as well as a health plan for the school to follow when needed.

Introduction There is a range of technology available today including mobile telephones, pagers, digital cameras, portable CD and MP3 players/iPods, personal digital assistants and other similar devices. All of these have the potential to be incorporated appropriately into lessons, opening exciting new approaches to learning. When these technologies are misused by students they can be very disruptive to teaching and learning and in some cases cause harm. Tamworth High School acknowledges that students may need to be in possession of a mobile telephone at school for reasons relating to their safety in travelling to and from school. Taking photographs or videos while at school or engaged in school-related activities by students may only occur if there is a sound reason for the photography. Depending on the particular circumstances and purpose of the photography, the permission of staff, parent/ carer or student may be required. POLICY Student Responsibilities The student must take full responsibility for these devices. The school or staff will not be responsible for their loss, theft or damage. Students who bring them to school do so at their own risk. Students will use their mobile phone in a way which reflects the core values being taught in schools, including the values of respect, responsibility, care and fairness. Students must not use mobile telephones or other devices to disrupt the learning environment or interfere with the operation of the school. Such activities may incur disciplinary action including suspension.

Students must not use mobile telephones or other devices to threaten, bully, intimidate or otherwise harass other people through any SMS or text message, photographic, video or other data transfer system available on the telephone or for any illegal activity. Such activities may incur disciplinary action including suspension. Under no circumstances will inappropriate use of mobile telephones with cameras be tolerated. Students found to be using any camera contrary to this acceptable use policy will be dealt with under the school discipline policy. Disciplinary action will be taken in all cases. Improper use of mobile telephones or other electronic devices may result in: Detention or other appropriate disciplinary measure as determined by the school’s disciplinary policy. The student being required to hand in their mobile telephone or other electronic device at the beginning of the school day for collection when the student goes home. Confiscation of the mobile telephone or other electronic device until such time as their parent or caregiver is able to attend school to collect the device. Other disciplinary action in cases where students have bullied or threatened or harassed other students or staff via the mobile telephone or other personal communication device or where the device has been used to take photographs or display inappropriate material. Emergency Contact If a parent or caregiver needs to contact a student at school as a result of an emergency, they are required to call the school’s main office and a message will be sent immediately to the student. If a student needs to make emergency contact with anyone they can do so through the school’s main office.

Students wishing to move to a university at the conclusion of Year 12 must meet some additional requirements laid down by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) which uses students results to determine their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). The ATAR is used to determine eligibility for specific courses. Tamworth High has some special arrangements to ensure the broadest possible curriculum options for students. Tamworth High School has a fine tradition of students excelling in a broad range of activities beyond the core curriculum. We have fine sporting teams, with regular successes at the local, regional and state levels, and a number of ex-students have represented the nation at Olympic and other International events. Performances are regular events at Formal Assemblies, special events and Presentation Night for the Concert Band, Stage Band, Vocal Ensembles, Percussion Groups, Musical Soloists, Dance Groups and Soloists, Drama Groups, Public Speakers and Debaters. School Productions, Eisteddfods, local and state competitions also provide opportunities for students to develop and present their leadership and teamwork abilities, as well as their talent. Close links with our local primary schools also means our students are regularly involved in supporting both students and staff from other school with their swimming carnivals, musical productions and talent nights. Through our developing Agriculture and Primary Industries programs students can develop confident and the ability to work with sheep and cattle, parading them at various shows; work with farm equipment and animals on our Ag plot as well as develop other practical skills.
