Graves are meant to be situated in cemeteries in deserted areas, but in Zonkizizwe Zone 1 two families are living with seven graves on their properties. Lethi Nkosi, mother of the owners of the properties and a resident herself, said they took up residence in Zonkizizwe in the early 1990s and there are two stands - number 4333 and 4334 - that belong to her children. She said on those two stands there were seven graves. Three belonged to white people whose families came to collect their bodies. The four remaining graves belong to black people and the bodies have not yet been collected. Nkosi said the relatives of those buried in the four remaining graves used to come and visit the graves, but have not done so for more than five years. “There is a woman ghost among the four graves,” said Nkosi. “She once knocked at my house one
night around 11:00 pm, asking me to open the door because she had something to tell me. I opened the door and there was no one there. People who are travelling at night and in the early hours of the morning used to see her. There are times where the main door of the house opens on its own at night when it is locked. We want these graves to be removed, as it is not safe or good for people to live with graves,” she said.Thoko Nkosi, another one of the stand owners said, “We want to build a big house but we are unable, due to the graves situated on our stands. We are in need of help - we have been reporting the matter but there has been no response.”Whitey Ngwenya, Public Relations Officer of SANCO Kathorus Zone said, “We have been proposing the removal of graves in the township for a long time, but there has been no response from the municipality.
In our African culture it is a bad omen to stay with graves that are unknown to you. We have a challenge of people digging the graves of the white people with the perception that they are buried with riches. We are calling for the responsible department to act with immediate effect to remove the graves and relocate them in cemeteries.”Ward councillor Kenneth Teboho Letsoha said, “They illegally occupied the land long ago during the liberation struggle and these stands are not proclaimed for human settlement. I have been reporting the matter to the municipality for a long time, asking them to remove the graves. We have a big challenge of graves in Zonkizizwe and I will also make a follow-up with the municipality to make sure that the graves are removed.”

Welcome, everyone, to the month of August, when we honour and celebrate the lives of women who have contributed to the country’s democracy. It is the time when we show love and appreciation for women who are doing positive things in our communities. There are many activities taking place around Kathorus, with women celebrating the month by helping those who are less fortunate or by hosting seminars to motivate each another. We have many interesting stories in this
edition, including the mixed reactions from the community and various stakeholders about the relocation of the Old Natalspruit Hospital to the newly built hospital in Vosloorus. The official opening of the new hospital will be on 28
August and there are plans to demolish the old hospital building. To find out more about what is happening around the community of Kathorus, read your copy of tame TIMES. Send your comments regarding the issue of Natalspruit Hospital to: [email protected]
It is a sad reality that, in the highly technological age that we are living, people living with disabilities are not fully exposed to employment opportunities in the information technology sector. It is for this reason that the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality invited learners from Ezibeleni School for the Physically Disabled in Katlehong to an ICT Career Guidance workshop held at the Boksburg Civic Centre recently. According to Archie Futshane, a manager at the Metro’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Department, the workshop was organized to demonstrate to the learners how the ICT sector is inclusive of people living with disabilities. “Today is about exposing the learners to IT, showing them that there is room for them and that only the sky is the limit,” said Futshane. The learners were educated about the role of ICT in South Africa and the rest of the world, as well as about skills gaps and career and entrepreneurship opportunities
in the sector. The activities of the day also included a motivational talk by Thandi Ngema, who encouraged the learners to look at the way communications around them take place, and see what positive contributions they can make. “The world does not owe you anything, you have been created to fulfil a purpose, so take charge and make a difference,” said Ngema.ICT career and training service providers were present to recruit learners who have an interest in pursuing a career in ICT. Agnes Ngubane, Principal of Ezibeleni School, said that she is thankful to the municipality for this opportunity and hopes to see the relationships formed continue in the years to come. “We want to see our learners become educated and be employable. Most of them are from homes where they are hidden and are thus not exposed to the world out there. Such opportunities are foreign to them and that is why we are truly grateful for this opportunity,” said Ngubane.

Methodist Church ME Molio Women of Manyano celebrated Women’s Day on Saturday by serving lunch and donating shoes and groceries to Ark of Love Old Age Home at Sunrise in Zonkizizwe.Lindi Ndima, a member of Methodist Church ME Molio Women of Manyano said, “As part of celebrating Women’s Day, we served the elderly with a decent meal, prayed with them and motivated them, telling them that there is still hope for them. As women we are embracing this day according to the theme that a woman is a mother to everybody and that everybody deserves to be treated with dignity and love.”In addition, she acknowledged the support of various supermarkets and businesses that assisted with donations, namely Banareng Office Suppliers with Orlando Pirates, Mathambo Spar, Green Valley Meat and Veggie, Vosloorus Cash and Carry and Thobeka Mathebula.Thobeka Nyabaza, Centre Manager of Ark of Love Old Age Home, said, “We appreciate the donations from the women of the church. As the centre, we are faced with a lot of challenges that also needed prayers - and they really assisted. We have 29 senior citizens in the centre and some were abandoned by their relatives and the social workers. We are not receiving any funding from the Department of Social Development - they state that we don’t comply with the regulations. I don’t know how we are going to comply if they don’t develop the centre.”Nyabaza added that they are requesting sponsorship to help run the centre. Those who are interesting in assisting the centre should contact her on 073 885 1569.

Fumana Comprehensive School donated clothes and money to the Vumundzuku bya vana (Our Children’s Future) organization based in Zonkizizwe Zone 6 in an endeavor to teach learners about the importance of giving to the needy. The event also aimed to extend Mandela Day beyond 18 July. The school’s two non-profit organisations, namely Fumana Change in Action (FCIA) and Victorious Leaders (VL), were the organisers of the event. They wrote the name of world icon Nelson Mandela on the ground, and learners and educators placed their coins and bank-notes
over the letters. In this way, they collected R2 490 in loose change. They also brought the clothes they had collected for donation to the Vumundzuku bya vana organization.Speaking to tame TIMES, Christina Samkelisiwe Buthelezi, the Director of Vumundzuku bya vana, said the organization is a Drop-in Centre that caters for orphans, vulnerable and neglected children, as well as those living with HIV. She said, “We were not expecting such wonderful gifts from the learners, so we really appreciate it. It shows that children care for one another,” said Buthelezi. The school management team was overwhelmed by the success of the event and the amazing generosity of learners’ organizations at the school.
It was his goal of becoming a renowned sports presenter that inspired the 24-year-old Mpho Madontsela from Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) to relocate to Gauteng earlier this year. His love for radio presenting began while he was still in Matric, and has driven the youngster to work for more than four radio and television stations already. Speaking to tame TIMES, Madontsela described himself as a unique radio presenter who strives for exclusive stories in his programmes. “I joined Kasi Community Radio earlier this year after spending a few years broadcasting in several radio and television stations in KZN. Currently I am presenting and producing Kasi FM Sports Wave Show from 15:05 to 17:30 midweek. The show has local, national and international sports content. It also has a range of sports stories from different sporting codes. My programme informs, educates and entertains,” explained Madontsela.Madontsela believes in taking full responsibility for his entire radio show - hence he also doubles up as radio producer for Kasi FM Sports Wave Show. Listeners are impressed by his way of packaging and presenting his show. “The positive feedback I got from the listeners through telephone-calls, Facebook and Twitter since joining Kasi FM in April has been impressive. It shows that I have taken a step in the right direction in a short space of time,” said Madontsela. Madontsela enrolled for courses in radio production, voice-over work and sports presenting at Icesa in Durban in 2008. He landed his first sports presenting job at Imbogodo Community Radio in 2010 and later joined Nanda Community Radio as a news reader in 2011 in KZN. In 2012 he joined 1 KZN TV as a sports presenter and news reader. The following year he got another break at Zululand FM and was hired to host Afternoon Drive.

Katlehong police officers recently partnered with other police officers from the Katlehong cluster, as well as community stakeholders, to bid farewell to former Katlehong Police Station Commander Brigadier Johan Rens who retired from the SAPS at the end of June.Dressed in black and white, the police officers danced, feasted, gave gifts and generally enjoyed their last moments with their former commander. Brigadier Johan Rens acknowledged the support he had received from the police and community during his work as station commander at Katlehong Police Station. He said they had stood by him when days were dark; and that it was because they cared that they had all managed to succeed together. Brigadier George Msesenyane Manganye is now his successor.Major General Ledwaba, Katlehong Cluster Commander, presented Brigadier Rens with three certificates, for good work done, excellent service and retirement. “He dedicated many years and loyal service to ensure the safety and security of the people of Katlehong,” said Major General Ledwaba.Brigadier George Msesenyane Manganye, the newly appointed station commander for Katlehong Police Station, said he had worked with the former station commander before and had seen that he was a hard worker. Twelve Katlehong primary schools converged on Hunters Field Stadium recently to battle it out for the Katlehong Primary Schools Dream Field Soccer Tournament Championship. The tournament was divided into two, namely boys and girls divisions. The teams were divided into four streams and the two winners of each stream qualified for the finals. In the girls’ final, Keketso Primary School was pitted against Zonkizizwe Primary School. Zonkizizwe won the final with a score of 2-0 and lifted the girls’ trophy. The coach of the winning school, Gift of Jesus Christ “Aka” Mbube, said their victory this year made them cry tears of joy, since they came third in the previous soccer tournament. He said they attributed their victory to the fact that they attacked and defended as a team. The principal of the losing school, Collins Ntota, was excited about the performance of his team. He said that their ladies’ club was only founded earlier this year, but managed to come first in their stream and advance to the finals. “Next year we will lift the Greenfield Cup. Although we do not have a soccer ground for training purposes, we obtained good results,” said the proud Ntota. In the boys’ final, Sonqoba Primary School played against Thabo Tona Primary School in a nail-biting encounter. Sonqoba dished out quick passes in the middle of the field while their opponents sat back and defended their territory, only unleashing counter-attacks when Sonqoba least expected them. Sonqoba finally broke through the tight wall of Thabo Tona’s defence and scored the solitary goal of the match. Sonqoba’s team manager
Abel Lebotho dedicated their victory to the school’s newly appointed principal, Bheki Khumalo.“We are pleased with the great work which has been done over the past year by our soccer coach Luyanda Mtshali. Since the arrival of coach Mtshali, our school has amassed trophies annually. It is because of this that I urge the parents of our school to help raise a stipend to reward him for the great service he has offered our school over the years. The team played according
to the coach’s instructions, and the victory will make our team wipe away tears of joy after they failed to win finals in the other two tournaments we played earlier this year,” said Lebotho. All 12 of the participating schools were given soccer outfits and soccer boots. Winners of the four streams were awarded trophies and the two winning schools, Sonqoba and Zonkizizwe, were each awarded trophies for their efforts. Kaizer Chiefs and industrious Bafana Bafana midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane
attended the event and applauded the organisers and all the schools which took part in the tournament. “This event is not about which school won or lost - it is about ploughing back into the community and developing soccer at the grassroots. It is the same philosophy which is in line with what I believe in. Other business sectors should follow suit,” concluded Letsholonyane.
GIRLS’ WINNER: Zonkizizwe Primary School was recently crowned champions of the Dream Field Soccer Tournament in the girls’ category.
BOYS’ WINNER: Sonqoba Primary School (In blue and powder blue soccer kit) was crowned overall winner in the Dream Field Soccer Tournament boys’ category recently.

Golfers nancially handicappedFour aspiring golf players from Kathorus Sports Development Agency will showcase their golfing skills at the Vryburger High School Annual Golf Day to be held in Boksburg on 29 August. The four golfers are Thato Bodibe, Wynand Morudu, Rethabile Moema and Tisetso Mokoena. However, the unavailability of the necessary finance has been the main stumbling block standing in the way of their golfing debut since the formation of their golf agency in 2012. Speaking to tame TIMES, Kathorus Sports Development Agency secretary Thato Bodibe said a lack of R2000 was hindering his colleagues’ dreams of playing in the upcoming golf competition. “The R2000 we are desperately in need of would cater for the team registration fee, prizes, golf players’ dinner, refreshments and lunch on the day of the event. The willing sponsor stands a chance of advertising his or her company at a hole of their choice on the day of the tournament,” said Bodibe.Sports development agency coach Wynand Morudu said that they have been practising for a while and are ready to compete. He urged companies who are willing to donate, or assist with the registration fee of their agency in the tournament, to deposit money in: ABSA 92-9315-5354 savings account. Contact Morudu at 08 2 058 9821 or Bodibe at 079 158 2630.
