Tamaya Wellness Program Mission: To promote, support, and maintain healthy
lifestyle choices within the Santa Ana Community
ISSUE 38
July
2019
On June 17, the Wellness
Program sponsored another successful cooking class. In
this hands on class, 10 participants took a trip to “Jan’s
on 4th” to learn tips and techniques for grilling meat,
seafood, fruit, and vegetables using a gas and charcoal
grill. There was also a demo on how to cut a mango and
how to use your charcoal grill as a smoker to add rich,
smoky flavor to foods. The recipes prepared were a
perfect match for any summer meal or special occasion
and included:
Spicy Shrimp Satay
Applewood Smoked Chicken
Grilled Vegetable Panini
Steak
Peach Cobbler
Pineapple Mango Salsa
Lime Cucumber Salad
There were great comments:
“I have never tried any of these recipes/foods, all of
them were very good.”
“Her helper was very knowledgeable with the grill
equipment, Thank you!”
“Very nice, polite, (Jan) knows her cooking”
“Jan is an awesome chef. I love all her recipes
including garlic recipes.”
“Everything was tasty!”
Many questions were asked:
What’s in Pesto? Olive oil, basil, garlic, parmesan,
salt, pepper
How long do you cook shrimp? Until they turn pink,
not too long or they will be rubbery.
Where do you buy self-rising flour? At any grocery
store or you can make it yourself.
I thought you had to let meat rest before cutting into
it? From the grill yes, not from searing or smoking.
What if I don’t like shrimp/tomatoes/garlic, etc.?
That’s ok, you don’t have to use it, eat it, or you can
substitute with other items you do like.
New Skills/Techniques Learned:
Smoking chicken with an old school grill
Searing/Smoking
Using the skillet for the cobbler
Learning about the temperatures, how fast the
veggies and shrimp cook
How to check the temp/how high to cook on
Overall, the class had a great time learning, laughing,
eating, joking, and enjoying each other’s company!
We had a great response as there were 10 additional
participants on the waiting/cancellation list. As a result,
another Grilling class was added and held on July 1 to
accommodate for the high demand.
GRILLING CLASS:
JAN’s ON 4th
The Wellness Program has been providing weekly
Senior Fitness activities for community
members who come to the TWC for the
Senior Meal Program and an Aging Well
class designed for older adults but open to
anyone in the community. Since January,
33 community members have attended a
total of 58 fitness activities. A few have
only participated once, but many
participate on a regular basis.
The types of activites offered included Tai Chi, Country
Dance Fit, Aging Well, Chair Volleyball, Walking, Seated
Stretch, Beach Ball Game, Chair Basketball, and Corn
Hole. We know that some standard exercises are not
suitable for everyone so we offer low-impact & FUN
alternatives to keep seniors active. Many of the
activites are safe, enjoyable, can be held indoors, and
are all great ways to improve and maintain balance,
flexibility, strength, and range of motion. Activites are
provided by Isaac Leon, Kathryn Herrera, and Angela
Moreno. Special thanks to the Senior Program
staff for promoting and encouraging
participation. We hope others can join us!
Currently, we are offering classes for Fall
Prevention; Matter of Balance is a 4-class series
designed for older adults or any community
member who is interested in preventing falls
among older adults. Each class will focus on a
different topic including what causes falls in older
adults, what you can do to protect yourself, how to
keep your home safe, and setting goals to increase
activity for better balance. You don’t want to miss out
on great information. For additional info, contact
Kathryn @ 771-6772.
