Hello,
My name is Tamara Rudo Mpisaunga but I simply go by Rudo. Thank you for taking the time to look through my portfolio, a selection of some my work and interests.
I am a young creative mind, with a strong design sensibility and display considerable ingenu-ity when problem-solving. I’m regarded as a responsible team player with a drive to produce quality work and take pride in being an organized individual with a curious mind and a hun-ger to learn. Having studied and practiced architecture for the past 6 years, I have a strong foundation within the field of design and I am eager to expose myself to new information and develop my professional skills.
My ambition is to build a successful career in community-driven architecture, planning and property development. Before pursuing my Master’s I hope to develop a comprehensive un-derstanding of the development and construction process under the mentorship of archi-tects and designers driven by the desire to build thriving environments and communities.

The concept behind Beacon House was to develop a housing scheme that catered to the increasing demand for affordable housing in the city of Ottawa, specifically transitional housing for women. Transitional housing programs are designed to provide individuals who identify as women, or gender queer with semi-independent, supportive and affordable housing for up to 1 year. The McPhail House, operated by Cornerstone Housing for women, is one of Ottawa’s oldest transitional homes and offers a supportive housing environment for single women who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
The Beacon House project was designed to offer the Cornerstone Housing for Women an af-fordable expansion option to implement throughout the city. Two prototypes were designed to be constructed in the back yard of the McPhail House and would primarily accommodate mothers with children.
It implemented the use of PSBIPs (prefabricated straw bale insulation panels) and the micro homes were constructed from a prefabricated straw bale panel and clad in a willow wattle rain screen. Over time these affordable dwellings could be dispatched to multiple shelters throughout the city and erected to cater to the increasing demand for stand-alone transitional homes.

The Ankh Wellness Center is a mixed-use residential complex that houses new immigrant families and those relocating to Ottawa from its surrounding rural areas. The center aims to cultivate the 6 dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, en-vironmental and social wellness. Located along the Major Hill Escarpment, across from Parliament Hill, the complex is a microcosm of Canada and serves as a reminder of the importance of bridging the gap between the new urban and traditional rural Canada.
Equipped with a variety of facilities such as continued learning and vocational training programs, the establishment assists residents with the often challenging transition into Canadian urban life and culture.
Divided into 2 sections, the residential portion contains 42 residences, a gym, and a daycare center. A winding ramp allows visitors a glimpse into the various programs as they mean-der down from the forum to the grotto, a rotunda with a drumming performance floor. The administrative offices, performing arts learning center, gallery and performing arts theatre seek to promote intellectual and social wellness; while the public boathouse and bath-house encourage physical well-being.
The raison d’etre is the fragrance distillery and perfumery that employ residents and new immigrants in need of work. The herbs and plants used for the fragrances include Laven-der, Amyris, Jasmine, and Lemongrass, and are sourced from the greenhouse on the roof of the center. These plants are used to manufacture novelty perfumes, soaps, and fragrant oils. This rooftop belvedere allows access to beautiful views of both Ottawa and Gatin-eau; combined with the perfumery they promote environmental, spiritual and occupational wellness.

Yokohama Community Center & Boat House| Kanazawa, Japan
Boat House Perspective I14
This project examined the notion of polarity and the pairing of opposing programs in a single project. Located along the Ooka River the Yokohama Community Center & Boat House combined three programs- a dynamic recreational center, a subdued library, and a community-oriented boat club and boardwalk.
Contained within the main building are a public library, a terrarium, classrooms, a gymna-sium and a soccer field beside it. Opposite the main building, resting on the river is a boat club with a cafe and a public boardwalk on its roof.
The 3 programs are divided by 3 water features; a terrarium separates the library from the recreational center and serves as an additional reading space. Two minor water features run parallel to the main building, separating it from the boat club and creating a prome-nade between the 2.
The distinguishing elements are the 3 wave-shaped roofs that represent the progression from the dynamic street (peak) down the terrarium (trough )and back up to a peak as it moves through the recreational center. The boathouse mimics the recreation center in a “big brother-little brother” relationship but levels out to allow for a public observation deck.

Learning Garden Perspective
Situated adjacent to the Carp River and the South March Wetlands is the Kanata Kindergar-ten. The school seeks to remove itself from its commercial backdrop by focusing inwards on itself and directing its attention towards the surrounding marshland. In doing so, the children find the space nurturing and in turn they can disconnect from the comfort of their homes and parents and connect with this inviting environment.
The building comprises of 3 zones, disconnected from one another to allow each to func-tion autonomously. The Great Hall is a multi-use zone that is used by members of the com-munity to run workshops and host events during the weekends and school holidays. The Kindergarten section, distinguishable by its access to the playground and Learning Gardens and the Administration zone. All 3 programs are linked through continuous circulation and a playful modular roofing system.
