MARCH RESIDENT OF THE MONTH: FRANCES FISHMAN

Frances Fishman was born on February 12, 1920, in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born to Arnold and Lina Fishman, who were both born in Poland. Frances had two siblings, her older sister Margaret and her older brother Martin. As a young girl, Frances would watch all of the movies that were coming out at her nearby drive-in theater. She also loved swimming, playing golf, and playing tennis. She began playing golf at the young age of twelve! All of the men in her family were golfers and they encouraged her to start young. However, the sports she truly loved were tennis and swimming.

As a teenager, Frances did not enjoy high school. She disliked it so much that she pushed herself to take more classes than the usual student. She finished high school at sixteen years old. In 1936, she enrolled at Kansas City Junior College. In 1938, she transferred to the University of Illinois and graduated in 1940. Later that same year, she attended graduate school at Washington University of St. Louis, studying Social Work. In 1939, she met her special someone, Leon Fishman, while he was pursuing his masters in chemistry.

Two years later in 1941, Leon and Frances Fishman decided to get married. Not too long after, Frances and Leon decided to grow their family. They had two children, a son, Hank, and a daughter, Lee Ann. Frances loved taking car trips or travelling together as a family. She also enjoyed watching movies with the family. During these years, Frances worked as a social worker as well as a teacher. Frances’ favorite part of working as a social worker was the feeling of helping people in her job. Her favorite part of being a school teacher was working with kindergartners. Although she taught a variety of ages, she loved working with the little kids because of all the raw material that expands their imagination.

As their children got older, Hank and Lee Ann each pursued different interests. Hank graduated from UCLA and earned a masters in hospital administration. Hank has 2 children, one son named Michael and one daughter named Lisa. Lee Ann also went to UCLA, and earned her BS in Math. She went on to work for Hughes Aircraft. Lee Ann has one daughter named Juanita. Frances has 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

In their later years, Frances and Leon traveled the world. In fact, she has been to many, many places around the world, and when asked, one of the few countries she did not have a chance to visit was South Africa. Her favorite places were China and Italy. She loved China so much that she decided to go back for a second time in 1993. Frances has lived in Laguna Woods Village for 19 years, moving to The Towers after Leon passed away. Nowadays, you can find Frances swimming and walking at least a mile a day. Reading is also a passion of hers; she loves to read any kind of mystery novel. Frances has always been a very happy woman and continues to be so!

Friends we will dearly miss…
