President’s Message

HHHHaaaappppppppy y y y OOOOccccttttoooobbbbeeeerrrr!

Crisp air, colorful leaves, sweatshirts,

football, pumpkins and cider…I love the

Fall! My girls have informed me, “It’s

time to put up the Fall decorations,

Mommy!” Indeed it is, and so many were

made here at Tall Pines over the years.

One of my favorites is the scary “ghost”

footprints that always remind me of how

much my kids have grown.

A special project idea from my home to

yours:

“Talking Stick”

Have the youngest member of your family

select a special stick (approx. 15” long

and 1” thick) picked up from the ground,

already released from a tree. Take turns

sanding the stick until its smooth,

making sure that every family member

participates. This should take some time

to accomplish, perhaps several days.

Next, each member of the family places

their own special mark or decoration on

the stick. Use carving tools (carefully!),

markers, paint, etc. to leave your

permanent “mark” on the stick. Seal the

stick with furniture wax. As often as you

wish, but at least weekly, create a special

family time where there are no

distractions like TV, ipods, phones, etc.

The youngest family member starts by

holding the stick first. They get to do the

talking, everyone else is to listen until the

stick is passed to them and it becomes

their turn. Make a game out of it, or just

listen and learn from each other…if you

listen closely and with an open heart, it

can be a really magical time!

Wishing you a Happy Fall,

Jeanette

Business Office

Well, the business office is starting to settle down a bit, as the beginning of the year “rush” is now over. We have settled in and are getting into our routines ~ just like the kids. Thank you to all of you who have turned in your paperwork!! And, for those of you still working on completing your child’s file ~ please get those forms to me ASAP. As you have heard me say countless times….these forms are a requirement with the State of California. Please don’t hesitate to come see me, should you have any questions, or just to say ‘Hi’ ~ I’m always happy to help! Also, just a reminder that tuition is due on October 1st ~ please remember to put your child’s name and class on your check, and drop it in the black box at my desk. Tuition for the 2013-2014 school year is as follows:

2 x week = $121 per month 3 x week = $182 per month MW pm Class = $81 per month PT Classes = $50 per month

October is such a fun time at Tall Pines ~ the weather starts to change, the kids start reciting the story of the “Big Pumpkin,” and of course Halloween, where we become overrun with fairies, firemen and super heroes ~ this really is a magical place!! It’s going to be another wonderful year here at Tall Pines!!

Fundraising Events & Dates

We are so excited to see the sign-up list

filling up for our first annual Dinner and a

Movie! If you haven't already, please be

sure to get your name down and meal

ordered for the BBQ as we need this info to

plan how much food we to have on hand.

It's going to be a super fun time and we

encourage you to at least come for dinner

and use this time to make new friends,

strengthen old ones and get the kids

together outside of the classroom. See you

all there for dinner at 5:30pm and

The AristocatsThe AristocatsThe AristocatsThe Aristocats at 7pm on October 2nd!

We are still accepting bulb orders and will

extend the deadline until October 11th. Be

sure to take your order form with you to

work, ask friends and family and any avid

gardeners you know too! These are great

flowers, they've come up for me every year

since I first started planting them and

they're a bit less expensive than the ones

you'll find at a nursery. Thanks again for

your participation and help supporting our

wonderful school!

Our first Take Out for Tall Pines event is

coming up this month on October 24,

4-9pm at Round Table Pizza! This is a great

way to support the school without having to

go much out of your way. Just drop by Round

Table with your voucher anytime on the

24th, stick around for dinner with your Tall

Pines friends or take it home with you and

20% of the proceeds from the sales will be

donated to the school. Make that Thursday

pizza night for a good cause!

Next month, be on the lookout for Original

Artwork. This great program allows you to

turn your child’s original artwork into

presents and keepsake items, just in time

for the holidays. Information will be in your

cubbies in early November!

Also, a big THANK YOU to all our families

who've ordered this year's Tall Pines

t-shirts and sweatshirts! We know you're

going to love them and they should be back

to us in just a couple more weeks.

Tall Pines Event Reminder

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION Dear Parents – Our Halloween celebrations are approaching fast. We do celebrate Halloween but in a very friendly non-scary atmosphere. Young children love Halloween. They love to dress up. There are a few reminders we must follow. Please do not send your child in a scary costume or a costume with a mask. If your child chooses not to wear a costume, that is perfectly fine – they may change their minds, so you might want to send the costume in a bag. We do ask parents to dress up for Trick-or-Treating on Treat Street – located at the Fairgrounds. We need four adults from each class, so please check with your teacher if you are able to help. There will be a Halloween Celebration sign-up by the sign-in sheet in your child’s class. Again, be mindful of the “too scary” factor. Parents that sign up to pass out treats, please be ready at 10:30 am – we will have all of your treats ready for you to take over to Treat Street.

☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ All parents –Please bring 40 non-candy items to be passed out on Treat Street Last Reminders –

~Your child will make a trick-or-treat bag in class, so there is no need for them to bring one

~Sign up on the Celebration sheet by the sign-in sheet to bring something ‘healthy’ for that day. All activities are during class time. Trick-or-treating on Treat Street.

~Treat bags are not opened at school - We tell the children that Moms and Dads need to check treats because of safety. If they are opened at school your child will likely misplace them.

~Please be mindful of not making your Halloween celebration time too stressful or too jam-packed with too many things to do. Enjoy your children at this special time – dragging them everywhere to get candy may be too overwhelming – SIMPLIFY and use YOUR good thinking!! The Teachers and I thank you! This is probably one of my favorite things to do – it is very sweet and simple. If you do not wish to participate in this celebration for any reason, please feel free to discuss that with your child’s Teacher or myself. WE DO HALLOWEEN CUTE!

TALK:TALK:TALK:TALK: Begin talking to your baby the moment he/she is born. And keep talking with your kids because language is an essential part of their growth and development. - Encourage conversation at dinner. Choose topics such as feelings, problem-solving and goals. - Tell stories of your childhood. - Play games in which each family member adds to a story. - Cruise the news Select an appropriate topic for family discussion.

PLAY:PLAY:PLAY:PLAY: Engaging in a wide variety of play experiences is the work of childhood. Skills such as focusing and shifting attention, taking turns and following rules are strengthened in play. - Teach simple games such as Simon Says and Follow the Leader to build focus and the ability to follow directions. - Encourage imaginary play that develops abstract thought, making plans and taking on roles. - Play board and memory games. Play hide-and-seek games that require holding unseen information in the brain. - Play rhythm and rhyme games to build patterning and organization skills.

LIVE:LIVE:LIVE:LIVE: Everyday life gives families ample opportunity to develop soft skills. Watch for teachable moments. You’re the best teacher your children will ever have. - Allow children to care for a pet to anticipate and meet needs and value the well-being of another. - Teach kids how to save their money for a desired toy, learning to wait for gratification and patience. - Help children do simple acts of kindness (e.g. decorating a giant cookie for a friend’s birthday). - As a family, volunteer at your community food bank or homeless shelter. - Make family rules together to verbalize the need for structure and include children’s ideas. There’s no substitute for a nurturing home environment where emotional skills are taught and modeled. Take a quick inventory of your children’s strengths and needs, then try a few of the suggested activities. Watch your children’s emotional readiness soar.

Seven Essential Seven Essential Seven Essential Seven Essential Life SkillsLife SkillsLife SkillsLife Skills

Every Child NeedsEvery Child NeedsEvery Child NeedsEvery Child Needs 1111. Focus and Self-Control: In a world filled with distractions, children reach goals by paying attention, remembering rules, thinking flexibly and exercising self-control. Build focus: Play guessing games, such as “I’m thinking of an animal...” or listening games during read-alouds, such as repeating phrases from the text (e.g. “Good night, Moon”).

2.2.2.2. Seeing Others’ Perspective: Gaining empathy, understanding others’ intentions and avoiding conflict. This forms the basis of children understanding their parents’ and teachers’ intentions. Encourage understanding of others: Ask your kids to share their feelings, repeat back to them (i.e. “You’re feeling angry?”) Create opportunities to pretend. Try on the perspective of others: “What are mommies like? How does a grandpa feel?” 3.3.3.3. Communicating: More than reading, writing and speaking, communication is planning your message and understanding how others receive it. Teachers and employers feel this skill is most lacking today. Build communication skills: Use books as conversation starters. Ask “What will happen

next?” or “What would you do if you were__?” Encourage singing, dancing, drawing and painting as ways to communicate. Say, “Tell me about this painting.”

4.4.4.4. Making Connections: Sorting, categorizing, connecting bits of information in new ways. Learning what’s the same and what’s different. The ability to make unusual connections is at the core of creativity. Ask your child to sort toys as they’re put away: blocks in one tub, crayons in another. Sort the contents in many different ways (size, shape, color, number of holes, texture) and keep charts. Try guided play “Can you build a house with four walls? Can you find a way to connect the house and garage?”

5.5.5.5. Critical Thinking: An ongoing search for knowledge that guides beliefs, decisions and actions. It involves developing, testing and refining ideas about “what causes what” to happen. Build critical thinking and promote curiosity: Allow your child time to search for a solution. In the bath, say, “Do you think the boat will float?” Allow children to pursue their own interests. If it’s birds, give them binoculars and bird books. 6.6.6.6. Taking on Challenges: Taking risks, being willing to make mistakes with the goal of learning something new and attaining a goal. Kids who are willing to take on a

challenge (instead of avoiding it) will do better in school and in life. Challenges: Search out de-stressing exercises such as taking deep breaths and putting head down. “Live through” failures. Say, “Well, that didn’t work, what else can we try?” Praise efforts and strategies, not results.

7.7.7.7. Engaged Learning: Taking responsibility for learning, developing individual interests, being willing to learn. Kids can realize their potential through learning. Engagement: Offer opportunities to set goals in three steps: plan, do and review. “Today I’ll build a farm with my stuffed animals.” Then follow the steps. Give children direct experiences, not just observations. Go to the zoo and record animals seen.
