To talk about actions—whether in English or German (or most other languages)—we use verbs.

Key things about verbs

• A verb tells what the action is, and when it takes place.

• Every sentence must have a subject and a verb—or it isn’t a sentence.

• The form of the verb changes according to the subject. (This is called “conjugation.”)

Talking about yourself, or yourself and others.

Common Errors

Trying to translate “I am running” as “Ich bin laufen.”

Forgetting to conjugate the verb, or conjugating it wrong.

(These confuse your listener or reader!)

Forgetting that in statements, the conjugated verb always comes second.
