Dear Course Director,

I am getting MARRIED/ run an estate agents/ have a direct sales company/ need some headshots done for my acting portfolio/ a cover shot for my album.

And would like to offer one of your students the FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY to photograph my WEDDING/ properties/ products/me. I would like the photographs supplied as hi res images, and would like to OWN THE COPYRIGHT outright.

I have NO BUDGET for this but as it is a GREAT OPPORTUNITY for a student to gain some professional experience. Please could you recommend someone to me who will be available on the following dates?

thank you

Student testimonial

‘Being part of this young and dynamic business has helped and developed my skill set further. Not only my photographic skills have improved, but also my leadership, management and marketing skills.

Furthermore I have learned about financial and legal aspects of running a business, which is crucial knowledge for my further career.’

The South Bank Collective:

When things go wrong…

Page 22: Talented, Creative, Ambitious: The South Bank Collective

Dear (Student)   I lead the corporate communications team at LSBU and I’m very disappointed that we have still not received the pictures from the Authors’ Evening event for which you were commissioned in time for our publication deadline.   As Liz explained when she briefed you, we commissioned this photo shoot for a news story and so needed a selection of images the next working day. As we have now passed our publication deadline having not received the pictures, this has been a waste of our time and budget. I’m afraid we won’t be able to use your services again unless a more serious approach to client deadlines is taken.   I look forward to your proposed resolution on this.   Kind regards (Marketing)

Responding to customer feedback..

• Take complaints seriously: reputational damage • Students must lead on responding to complaints, with

support • Pilot phase of Collective: emphasize that processes are still

being developed • Learning process for students and for University

Demonstrates support for enterprise from staff across LSBU“I would very much like to support student enterprise and thus the reason for my e-mail giving an opportunity for this to be addressed. The reality, however, is that I cannot continue to pay for photography that is not returned within deadline.”

Dear (Student),

Thank you for your reply, We would like to pay you as a matter of principle but I must stress this cannot happen again.

Kind Regards,

(Marketing)

“Finally try not to worry! I have been on the end of angry/disappointed clients when a job has gone wrong and it can be a horrible feeling... but its an essential part of the learning process and everyone goes through it. Part of the point of establishing the agency is so you can learn this stuff now so that hopefully it doesn't happen in the future on even bigger jobs!”

What we have learnt

• More control to students = greater investment in projects

• Learning by doing has been especially effective

• Live projects increase students’ confidence and professionalism

• Learn the most when things don’t go to plan

• Play to strengths: Collaboration between academic and professional service

• Something for every student: develop creative practice, produce work, finance, marketing, teamwork

Page 26: Talented, Creative, Ambitious: The South Bank Collective

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: • University commission to run a collaborative project

with a budget of £24,000• Commission from FASSI Crane Calendar for £6,000 • Shop front given to the collective as a project space

Page 27: Talented, Creative, Ambitious: The South Bank Collective

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE:• Place of the course in the University is secure,

allowing us to continue developing the conceptual and critical areas, and use independent funding for projects.
