A Talent Transcript

Members of the 2007 graduating class of the St. Louis Public School District are participating in a PurposeDriven Talent Transcript program that the school district envisions will become a model for all U.S. graduatesat the high school level.

What is a Talent Transcript?

The talent transcript is essentially a 'running resume' of achievements and accomplishments. It's thekitchen sink of good things - things you'll never find on boring, dry academic transcripts. It includeswork experiences, internships, community service activities and organization involvement as well assignificant accomplishments and awards. Talent Transcript Founder Ed Watkins says, "we do adisservice to our people when we confine their life history to grades and courses, when in reality theyhave so much more to offer."

Talent For a Purpose!

On March 71\ the author ofthe best selling hardback book in American history, Dr. Rick Warren, addressed800 members of the 2007 graduating class. His talk inspired Talent Transcript author Ed Watkins and SLPSSuperintendent Diana Bourisaw to design a Purpose Driven Talent Transcript initially delivered through theschool's College Summit program.

"We want our children not just to make it into college, but also to be adequately prepared academicallyand socially so that they complete college," says Superintendent Diana Bourisaw.

VaIidation of Your Purpose Driven Talent Transcript

What makes your SLPS Talent Transcript unique? Your Talent Transcript will be placed along side yourAcademic Transcript as an official document available to you throughout your life.

'96 Graduate~ Will Have More 'than A Diploma To Show~Talent Transcripts' Offer RoundupOf Activites While At St. Charles HighBy Raymond W. Vodicka01the St. CllartesPost .

~"::":'-se:nicii"sgraduating this year at SI.Charle" High School not only will begetting their diplomas but also tal.ent transcripts.

A talent transcript, said counselorJohn Smith, "shows the. kind ofthings they've done, both extracur.ricular activities and outside ofschool."

It is hoped that the listing of activoitie~. will helpstudents winscholarships tocolleges or atleast -pave theway for accep-.tance to schools. It also is hopedthat the tran-scripts will help students land jobs..~The program is believed to be the

only one of its kind at a highschoolin this country, said Ed Watkins, avice president at Lindenwood Col-lege. He developed talent tran-scripts there about four years ago tohelp seniors get accepted to gradu-ate schools or get jobs. Eventually,he said, all high schools and collegeswill adopt. the idea of talent tran.scrip'iSl:iecause "it's the right thingto do for the students."

St. Charles High Principal JerryCook said he believes the tran.scripts will help graduates makebetter impressions. Colleges andemployers will see more thangrades. They will see students' ac.tivities in church. jobs and otherarenas that show "what they'vebeen doing with their lives." With.out a talen! transcript, outsiders

"might not have a clue as to howmuc~ (students) have beeninvolved. "

SI. Charles High seniors are en-thusiastic about the transcripts.

"Everybody thinks it's a neat pro-ject," said Kristin Barklage. "The(potential) school not only gets tosee how you do academically but "11the other activities you are involvedin - if you held office or did com.munity service." Kristin, who has

been involved inthe NationalHonor Society, the OctagonClub and variouschoirs, said shehelieves suchtr anscripts will"definitely

help" when students are consideredfor scholarships.

Cooper Priess said lhe tai"nttranscript "lets colleges know youcan handle stress." Priess has a 3.8grade-point average, "it doesn'ttake much to attain a 4.0 if you don'thave anything else to do." But hehas been "fairly active" in school invarious bands and in the 4-H Club.Last year, he attended Boys Stale. He also has worked at various jobsafter school and helped form a bandrailed Nt'd Kulp
